This cuvée always shows lots of oak (it’s brought up in 100% new barrels), especially in its youth, but it is incredibly well-integrated and largely disappears once at full maturity. Hide bottles for 7-8 years if you can, and it’s going to keep for 30 years or more. |

Jeb Dunnuck (94-96+)The 2020 Vieux Château Mazerat reveals a vivid purple hue to go with medium to full-bodied aromas and flavors of cassis, blueberries, scorched earth, and graphite. While Maltus’s Le Dôme gets most of the attention, I continue to just love this wine, and it shines in 2020 with both beautiful fruit and ample structure as well as one heck of a great finish. I’m not sure this will match the 2018 or 2019, but we’re certainly in the same ballpark, with the style being much closer to the more elegant 2019. |

Jane Anson Inside Bordeaux (94)Exceptionally good, there is such heart to this wine, with rugged-textured tannins, edges of slate and salted black chocolate, sculpted blueberry fruits, touch of sage and fresh earth. Great stuff from owners and winemakers Jean-Claude and Jeff Berrouet. Will soften over next few years, but no need to wait too long to get going on this lovely wine. 20% new oak. |

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (92-94)The 2020 Vieux Maillet is a gorgeous wine. Bright, perfumed aromatics give Vieux Maillet striking aromatic presence that is so alluring, Deceptive in its mid-weight feel, Vieux Maillet is deep, potent and so expressive. Black cherry, lavender, spice, menthol, licorice and blood orange all build in the glass. Vibrant and wonderfully nuanced, the 2020 is compelling. |
