Bordeaux

Undeniably the world’s most revered wine region, Bordeaux has captivated drinkers for numerous centuries and is home to an abundance of some of the world’s best wine estates such as Lafite Rothschild and Margaux. Famous appellations within Bordeaux are categorised by their geographical location, in relation to their position on either bank of the Gironde, and its two smaller rivers, the Dordogne and the Garonne.

The Left Bank encompasses the Haut-Médoc, Pessac-Léognan and Graves whose wines tend to be dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, whereas the Right Bank comprises St Émilion, and Pomerol, where Merlot tends to dominate, and Cabernet Franc is preferred over its more renowned cousin.

Aile d'Argent 2013 (6x75cl)

Vinous - Ian D'Agata (90-93)

(67% sauvignon blanc and 33% semillon): Dark gold-tinged straw-yellow. Smoky herbs, grapefruit pith and honeydew melon aromas are complicated by white peach and spicy pear. Dense and brisk on entry, then a bit diffuse in the middle, but with vibrant flavors of passion fruit, grapefruit and herbs. Firm and bright but quite ripe too, showing nothing green or hard on the long, bracing finish. Seems less focused than recent vintages of Aile d'Argent, but perhaps another year in the bottle will help it gain precision.

Gorgeous rich dark purple in the glass. Quite jammy and concentrated on the nose, heady and perfumed with a lovely delicate florality to it too. Great freshness on the palate, juicy but a dark blackcurrant and cherry fruit juice. Beautifully balanced with integrated tannins and oak. Well defined fruit, generous and quite abundant against softly grippy, velvety tannins that just give support to the overall frame. It's serious but with a lightness of touch and playfulness - energetic and lively but still with depth. A great Alter Ego and confident winemaking on show.

Wine Advocate (88)

What a surprise in an incredibly difficult year! Angelus has turned out a fully mature wine that needs to be drunk up over the next 3-4 years, but notes of olive, black cherry, and currant are present, along with some leafy, fern-like, forest smells. The wine is medium-bodied, soft, and one of the undeniable successes for this miserable vintage. Anticipated maturity: Now-2007. Last tasted, 4/02.

The 1998 Angélus, a blend of 40% Cabernet Franc and 60% Merlot, is deep garnet colored with a touch of brick. The nose is completely...WOW! It has an incredible array of smoked meats, incense, cigar box and dusty earth notions over a core of baked cherries, dried mulberries, preserved plums and dried roses with wafts of lavender, menthol and new leather. The palate is medium to full-bodied, rich, intense and packed with black fruit preserves accented by complex savory and earth-inspired flavors, supported by wonderful freshness, textured by plush tannins and finishing with fantastic tension. This still has loads of life—25+ more years!

Jeb Dunnuck (100)

The 2005 Angelus is as good as it gets, and despite having 2-3 decades of prime drinking ahead of it, is as profound a drinking experience as money can buy even today. Offering off the hook notes of blackcurrants, smoked herbs, blackberries, toasted spice, espresso and scorched earth, this beauty is unctuous and opulent on the palate, with incredible depth, yet never seems heavy, cumbersome or over the top. It has more depth and concentration than the 1990 (and I suspect any vintage in the 1990s or 2000s) and will keep for another 30 years or more.

Angelus 1992 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (88)

What a surprise in an incredibly difficult year! Angelus has turned out a fully mature wine that needs to be drunk up over the next 3-4 years, but notes of olive, black cherry, and currant are present, along with some leafy, fern-like, forest smells. The wine is medium-bodied, soft, and one of the undeniable successes for this miserable vintage. Anticipated maturity: Now-2007. Last tasted, 4/02.

Wine Spectator (92)

Angélus continues its hot streak. Super color and concentration for the vintage. Exotic aromas of berries, red fruits, toasted oak and minerals. Full-bodied, with full, silky tannins and a long minty, fruity finish. Fine for drinking now. Best after 1999. 10,000 cases made. -JS

Wine Advocate (98)

Wine Enthusiast (95)

Initially the wine is all firm tannins, but then there is a pure line of fresh black fruits that comes through, with cranberry tannins and blackberry jamminess. Above it all, is succulent richness and clear acidity. A beautifully shaped wine.
