France
The vast and diverse wine regions of France, each with its own unique terroirs, grape varieties, and winemaking techniques, are a treasure trove.
In Bordeaux, the birthplace of some of the world's most iconic wines, esteemed vineyards such as Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Haut-Brion produce exceptional red wines, showcasing the art of blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. The region is also renowned for its exquisite white wines, with vineyards like Château d'Yquem and Domaine de Chevalier producing legendary sweet wines.
Moving to Burgundy, the vineyards of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, and Domaine Armand Rousseau capture the essence of the region's revered terroir, crafting exquisite red wines from the Pinot Noir grape. Meanwhile, Domaine Leflaive and Domaine Coche-Dury are celebrated for their world-class white wines, predominantly made from Chardonnay.
The Champagne region, known for its sparkling wines, boasts illustrious houses such as Krug, Dom Pérignon, and Moët & Chandon, as well as grower-producers like Pierre Péters and Jacques Selosse. These vineyards create exceptional sparkling wines using the traditional method, offering a symphony of delicate bubbles, elegant flavors, and vibrant acidity.
In the Rhône Valley, iconic vineyards like Chapoutier, E. Guigal, and Château de Beaucastel produce remarkable red wines in the northern appellations of Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, and Cornas, showcasing the elegance and power of Syrah. Further south, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is celebrated for its rich and full-bodied red blends, with Château Rayas and Clos des Papes leading the way.
In Alsace, vineyards such as Domaine Zind-Humbrecht and omaine Trimbach craft exquisite white wines, including Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris, expressing the region's unique terroir and varietal character.
These are just a few highlights among the diverse array of wines that France offers. From the Loire Valley's crisp whites and elegant reds to the Languedoc-Roussillon's bold and robust wines, each region presents its own vinous treasures.

Vinous (92-94)The 2017 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru is much more reserved on the nose compared to the Charmes-Chambertin, the fruit a little darker. There is something of a crushed-pebble, almost beach-like scent, a distant tang of cockle sheds that surfaces with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin and a little more depth and grip than the Charmes-Chambertin, even if it does not quite display the same sensuality and flesh on the finish. Good potential. |

Vinous (95-97)The 2020 Chapelle-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru has a beautifully defined bouquet, touches of basalt/crushed rock permeating the red fruit, gaining intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a lilting and silky smooth Chapelle-Chambertin that expands and exerts more grip towards the finish, a touch of white pepper lingering on the aftertaste. Great potential. |

Wine Advocate (90-92)The 2016 Nuit St Georges Les Murgers des Cras is a blend of 20% Les Murgers, 20% Les Cras and 60% La Richmoine. I appreciate the energy of the aromatics here, the scents springing from the glass to offer bright Morello cherry and crushed strawberry scents, the mineralité neatly interwoven. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, nimbler than its peers with fine delineation and poise on the finish. This will be well worth seeking out. |

Vinous (90-92)(no new oak): Bright, dark red. Deep aromas of raspberry, redcurrant, flowers and minerals. Rich, sweet and pliant; seamless and sappy, combining lovely fat and precision. Quite suave owing to its vinosity. From the northern corner of the appellation. An excellent showing today. |

Burghound (93-96)Don't Miss! An exuberantly spicy nose is comprised primarily of assorted red berries, floral nuances and wisps of earth, the sauvage and sandalwood. There is a cool and restrained mouth feel to the mineral-tinged and attractively pure medium-bodied flavors that are a beguiling combination of power and refinement on the balanced and strikingly persistent finish. The Chapelle is a lovely effort but there is quite simply another dimension of complexity present here. Note that while this is very firmly structured there is so much dry extract present that this should be approachable after only 6 to 8 years if desired though it should amply reward 15 to 20. 2028+ |

Vinous (97-99)(just one new barrel out of seven): Dark red with ruby tones. Essence-of-Burgundy perfume of raspberry, white pepper, cardamom, Cuban tobacco, coffee and underbrush. Outrageously dense and intense on entry, then brilliantly delineated, penetrating and sweet in the middle palate, with its tangy red berry and earth flavors enlivened by building notes of menthol, rose petal and Oriental spices. With its uncanny energy and complexity and its unflagging finishing thickness, this noble, electric wine has all the elements for greatness. (And I could drink it today for its perfect balance and digestibility!) |

Vinous (94-97)(Perrot-Minot lost half of the crop here to frost in 2016): Good dark red. Knockout nose combines all the major Clos de Bèze food groups: raspberry, spices, rose petal, leather and stony, smoky silex minerality. Large-scaled, silky and mouthfilling without any undue weight, conveying a higher-pH impression than most of the other '16s here--but Perrot-Minot assured me that it's not above 3.45. Boasts serious thickness of texture leavened by smoky soil tones. Superrich, palate-staining, aristocratic wine with a great future. |

Vinous (92-94)The 2017 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has a clean, precise bouquet that is focused and direct, offering red and black fruit, crushed stone and more terroir expression than the Mazoyères. The palate is medium-bodied, the sappy red fruit on the entry laced with marmalade and dried quince, and grippy in the mouth, with a touch of spiciness, although it does not fan out on the finish as I hoped. Hopefully it will fill out with bottle age. |

Vinous (96-98)The 2018 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has a supremely well-defined, stony, intense bouquet that is just as detailed as the Chambertin, if not more so. This has fathomless depth. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins, taut and linear at first then fanning out beautifully toward the finish. Immense grace and grandeur combine to make an utterly compelling Clos-de-Bèze. |

Burghound (96-98)(Don't Miss!) This is aromatically similar to the Chambertin but, as is usually the case, much spicier and this spiciness carries over to the beautifully textured and lavishly rich flavors that possess that wonderful quality of inner mouth perfume, all wrapped in a powerful and gorgeously textured and massively long finish. This beauty is at once sophisticated yet robust and a wine that should live for several decades. Brilliant and one of the wines of the vintage. |

Vinous (95-98)Bright ruby-red. Inky blackberry, blueberry, violet, wild herbs and game on the nose, along with a suggestion of fresh blood. An essence of Chambertin soil on the palate, with outstanding black fruit intensity complicated by game and lifted by a floral topnote. This explosive wine features a mouth-staining, slowly mounting finish, with noble tannins perfectly supported by strong extract. Demonstrative already but with great energy and grip to support extended aging. A great Chambertin in the making. |

Vinous (94-97)A big, rich wine, the 2013 Chambertin Grand Cru emphasizes extract and density, followed by gorgeous aromatics that give the wine its sense of dimension. Dried rose petals, white pepper and blood orange add elements of intrigue in an intense, resonant Chambertin that is likely to require quite a bit of cellaring. Power and finesse collide in a Chambertin of true pedigree. |

Wine Advocate (95-97)The 2014 Chambertin Grand Cru seems to offer more fruit intensity on the nose compared to the 2014 Clos-de-Bèze, with cranberry and fresh strawberry, and a touch of damp woodland in the background. It gains intensity in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied but with great substance and depth than the Clos de Bèze; there is a keen line of acidity cutting through the intense red berry fruit, and wonderful mineralité and tension on the finish. It just gradually gains in intensity before it fans out with a sense of confidence and entitlement, as befitting a Chambertin. This is a superb wine. |
