France
The vast and diverse wine regions of France, each with its own unique terroirs, grape varieties, and winemaking techniques, are a treasure trove.
In Bordeaux, the birthplace of some of the world's most iconic wines, esteemed vineyards such as Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Haut-Brion produce exceptional red wines, showcasing the art of blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. The region is also renowned for its exquisite white wines, with vineyards like Château d'Yquem and Domaine de Chevalier producing legendary sweet wines.
Moving to Burgundy, the vineyards of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, and Domaine Armand Rousseau capture the essence of the region's revered terroir, crafting exquisite red wines from the Pinot Noir grape. Meanwhile, Domaine Leflaive and Domaine Coche-Dury are celebrated for their world-class white wines, predominantly made from Chardonnay.
The Champagne region, known for its sparkling wines, boasts illustrious houses such as Krug, Dom Pérignon, and Moët & Chandon, as well as grower-producers like Pierre Péters and Jacques Selosse. These vineyards create exceptional sparkling wines using the traditional method, offering a symphony of delicate bubbles, elegant flavors, and vibrant acidity.
In the Rhône Valley, iconic vineyards like Chapoutier, E. Guigal, and Château de Beaucastel produce remarkable red wines in the northern appellations of Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, and Cornas, showcasing the elegance and power of Syrah. Further south, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is celebrated for its rich and full-bodied red blends, with Château Rayas and Clos des Papes leading the way.
In Alsace, vineyards such as Domaine Zind-Humbrecht and omaine Trimbach craft exquisite white wines, including Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris, expressing the region's unique terroir and varietal character.
These are just a few highlights among the diverse array of wines that France offers. From the Loire Valley's crisp whites and elegant reds to the Languedoc-Roussillon's bold and robust wines, each region presents its own vinous treasures.

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (92)The 2012 Les Griffons de Pichon Baron is dark, voluptuous and immediate. A burst of sweet red plums, smoke, graphite, licorice and tobacco hits the palate. The tannins are sweet but also energetic. Extroverted in style, the 2012 also has enough depth and overall density to drink well for another decade or so. Rose petal, iron and white pepper add the final shades of nuance. Here in its first vintage, Les Griffons is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot. |

Jeb Dunnuck (94)Coming from the deep, gravelly soils of Pauillac and based on 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot, the 2023 Les Griffons De Pichon Baron was aged 15 months in 50% new French oak. Cassis, graphite, crushed stone, and scorched earth all emerge from this beautiful, medium-bodied effort, and it has a focused elegance, a nicely concentrated mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and outstanding length. With just over 6,000 cases produced, it's a beautiful and classic second wine that needs a few years of bottle age and will have two decades of prime drinking. Drink 2027-2045. |

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (90-92)The 2019 Les Hauts du Tertre is an alluring second wine. Deep on the palate, with striking depth and complexity, Les Hauts is absolutely delicious. The aromatics are especially present and give quite a bit of lift to the red berry fruit. This is one of the best editions I can remember tasting of Les Hauts du Tertre. My tasting with General Manager Alexander Van Beek and Estate Manager Lorenzo Pasquini was one of the highlights of several weeks of the Zoom calls all of us will remember from this very particular campaign. At du Tertre, Van Beek and Pasquini have overseen a major redevelopment of about 65% of the property in favor of higher density vineyards. The wines have at times been a bit light, especially in the mid-palate, but the 2019s are quite successful in that regard, in all regards actually. Cuvaison was 21 days at a cool 24 degrees Celcius. Eric Boissenot is the consulting oenologist. Needless to say, it will be fascinating to see what future vintages bring. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (87-89)The 2021 Les Hauts du Tertre has a perfumed bouquet of blackberry and pencil box scents, nicely detailed and the oak neatly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied and very Médoc-like, with a peppery opening, good depth, just the right amount of dryness and a tobacco-infused finish. This is a perfectly capable Deuxième Vin to drink over 10 years after bottling. |

Vinous (91)The 2022 Beaune Les Prévolles comes from one-third of their own parcels and the rest from a neighbor's plot that is worked by Catharina Sadde and is populated with older vines prone to millerandage. This contains 80% whole bunches (less in 2023) with 20m/g of free SO2. The perfumed nose shows slightly darker fruit than other cuvées, with raspberry, blackberry leaf and a briar hint. The palate is medium-bodied with fine structure, a fine line of acidity and a little tension towards the finish. Excellent. |
