Good bright, dark red. Cherry and dark raspberry aromas are accented by mint and menthol nuances. Juicy, precise Nuits premier cru with an exhilarating light touch and a suave grain to its intense flavors of cherry, spices and minerals; an earthy component adds another dimension. The 2015 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a wonderful bouquet, dark berry fruit, light mulch aromas, incense and potpourri, very complex and expressive. The palate is medium-bodied and lightly spiced with ferrous red fruit and impressive weight. This was the last vintage that was fully destemmed.

Vinous (91-93)

Bright, dark red with ruby tones. Very rich, ripe aromas of black cherry, dark chocolate and violet. Fleshier and sweeter than the Vignes Rondes, but with lovely spicy lift and a touch of menthol austerity contributing definition and shape. Finishes spicy and long, with fine-grained tannins totally enrobed by the wine's mid-palate extract. Complex, saline and strong.

The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Chaignots 1er Cru has a well-defined bouquet of dark berry fruit, desiccated orange peel and a little rooibos. The new oak is quite prominent and feels a bit reduced. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins, grippy and muscular, perhaps missing some elegance and transparency. The firm finish leaves a spicy aftertaste. The 2018 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Chaignots has turned out brilliantly, bursting from the glass with aromas of cassis, black plums and cherries mingled with hints of spices, orange rind and violets. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and concentrated, with lively acids, ripe tannins and a generous core of fruit, it confirms that Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg performed especially well in the 2018 vintage.

The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Chaignots 1er Cru has the most expressive aromatics of the three wines that I tasted from the appellation at Domaine Mugneret. Only half the number of barrels were produced this year due to very small bunch weight. This has vibrant red berry fruit, wild strawberry, shaved black truffle and light crushed stone aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, quite taut and more linear than the Les Vignes Rondes, and certainly with greater tension toward the saline finish. Excellent.

Vinous (92-94)

The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Chaignots 1er Cru suffered quite a lot during the summer according to Christine because of the dryness. Nevertheless, it has an exquisite bouquet with beautifully defined, minerally red fruit that seems to blossom in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, an almost citric bead of acidity with a lively and sustained finish. Wonderful.

The 2021 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Chaignots 1er Cru was cropped at 17hL/ha with around 50% new oak. It has an exquisite, floral bouquet with dark berry fruit, peony and wilted roses, gaining intensity in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-chiselled tannins, an almost citric line of acidity with a tensile, linear yet compelling finish. Wonderful.

Here the nose is a bit fresher still with its more floral and spicier aromas of red pinot fruit, poached plum and violet that are again trimmed in wood and menthol nuances There is reasonably good volume and solid punch to the medium-bodied and lightly stony flavors that deliver fine length on the dusty, youthfully austere, firm and slightly more complex finale. This isn’t particularly dense but the balance is such that it should age gracefully over the next decade plus.
