France

The vast and diverse wine regions of France, each with its own unique terroirs, grape varieties, and winemaking techniques, are a treasure trove.

In Bordeaux, the birthplace of some of the world's most iconic wines, esteemed vineyards such as Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Haut-Brion produce exceptional red wines, showcasing the art of blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. The region is also renowned for its exquisite white wines, with vineyards like Château d'Yquem and Domaine de Chevalier producing legendary sweet wines.

Moving to Burgundy, the vineyards of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, and Domaine Armand Rousseau capture the essence of the region's revered terroir, crafting exquisite red wines from the Pinot Noir grape. Meanwhile, Domaine Leflaive and Domaine Coche-Dury are celebrated for their world-class white wines, predominantly made from Chardonnay.

The Champagne region, known for its sparkling wines, boasts illustrious houses such as Krug, Dom Pérignon, and Moët & Chandon, as well as grower-producers like Pierre Péters and Jacques Selosse. These vineyards create exceptional sparkling wines using the traditional method, offering a symphony of delicate bubbles, elegant flavors, and vibrant acidity.

In the Rhône Valley, iconic vineyards like Chapoutier, E. Guigal, and Château de Beaucastel produce remarkable red wines in the northern appellations of Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, and Cornas, showcasing the elegance and power of Syrah. Further south, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is celebrated for its rich and full-bodied red blends, with Château Rayas and Clos des Papes leading the way.

In Alsace, vineyards such as Domaine Zind-Humbrecht and omaine Trimbach craft exquisite white wines, including Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris, expressing the region's unique terroir and varietal character.

These are just a few highlights among the diverse array of wines that France offers. From the Loire Valley's crisp whites and elegant reds to the Languedoc-Roussillon's bold and robust wines, each region presents its own vinous treasures.

I loved the 2015 Minervois les Fontanilles and it’s one of the bigger, richer wines in the lineup. Made from equal parts Syrah, Grenache, Cinsault and Carignan, aged in equal parts stainless steel and barrel, it offers outstanding notes of black raspberries, cassis and a liquid rock like minerality. Like all the wines here, it has an inherent elegance and freshness (probably due to this higher elevation, unique terroir), and I suspect will evolve nicely for 4-6 years.

Lurid ruby. A highly perfumed bouquet evokes ripe red fruits, Indian spices, incense and smoky minerals. In a rich yet distinctly elegant style, offering concentrated, alluringly sweet raspberry and cherry liqueur, floral pastille and spicecake flavors that show excellent clarity and back-end thrust. Suave and seamless in texture, but possesses impressive structure thanks to a core of juicy acidity. The long, floral-dominated finish is shaped by supple tannins and shows serious tenacity.

The 2015 Echézeaux Grand Cru was buttoned down when I tasted it, the 100% new oak keeping a lid on the red berry fruit behind this wall. The palate is grippy on the entry with chunky red berry fruit (cranberry, wild strawberry and pomegranate) mixed with white pepper and sage notes towards the stocky finish. Like other 2015s from the domaine, I would like more terroir expression, more personality to be expressed.

The 2015 Vosne-Romanée Les Mazières will be the last release since the 45-year-old vines were pulled up following the harvest, since they were too degenerated. Matured in 50% new oak, it offers crisp red cherry and cranberry scents on the nose, neatly defined and focused with a hint of wet limestone in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit on the entry, a pleasing saline note running from start to finish with a gentle grip. This is a very commendable valedictory wine

The vines of Belair-Monange are split between limestone on the plateau and clay limestone on the slopes. This is a stand-out wine, poised and silky but still in the Moueix muscular house style in 2015. Tannins are fully present and fully committed. In the glass, the floral side opens up, and there's impressive salinity on the finish where you can practically lick the limestone. Excellent; one to put away for eight to ten years.

Bright medium red. Very pure but very reticent nose hints at blueberry, raspberry, licorice, game and woodsmoke. Delivers a compelling combination of fine-grained texture, deep sweetness and restrained power; still youthfully compressed but already boasts thrilling mouthfilling perfume of tart red fruits, spices and saline minerality. This spectacular Chambertin broadens out on the back half without giving any impression of weight. A wine of uncommon depth and class, with no sign of overripeness. With its salty, crushed-rock minerality, this wine saturates every square millimeter of the palate and stimulates the salivary glands on the sensationally long finish.

The 2015 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru is spectacular, wafting from the glass with a dramatic bouquet of sweet grilled meat, red and black fruit, candied peel and rich soil. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and powerful, with a lavishly gourmand attack that evokes the 2009 rendition, but this quickly segues into the mid-palate of an altogether more tautly structural, serious wine, its considerable dimension and concentration underwritten by racy acids. The finish is long and firm. This is a monumental Clos de Bèze built for the long haul.

The 2015 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St.-Jacques 1er Cru has more fruit intensity than Jean-Marie Fourrier's (implying just a slightly later picking, perhaps), offering copious black plum, raspberry, sous-bois and subtle tobacco scents that are beautifully defined. The palate totally delivers: harmonious, succinct, beautifully structured, with perfect acidity that imparts a disarming sense of symmetry, and brilliantly articulated terroir expression on the sustained finish. Bon vin, très bon vin. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

Bright medium red, a bit darker than the Gevrey-Chambertin Clos du Château. Darker, spicier and more complex on the nose, conveying a suggestion of Brochon power. A step up in energy and clarity as well, offering lovely density and cut to its raspberry and spice flavors. Finishes classically dry, firmly structured and long. As impressive an early showing as I can recall for this village wine chez Rousseau.

Arnaud Ente's 2015 Bourgogne Aligoté offers up aromas of crisp yellow orchard fruit, blanched almond and honeysuckle—the prelude to a medium-bodied, bright and vibrant wine, with succulent acids, lovely extract and almost crystalline purity. This bottling hails from old vines planted in the commune of Meursault and is routinely one of the finest examples of this variety to be found in all the Côte d'Or. Indeed, while Aligoté is seldom cellared, this will really blossom with a few years' sleep: the 2008, for example, is at the peak of its powers today.

Wine Advocate (87)

The 2015 Bourgogne Blanc from Arnaud Ente is initially quite reduced, so decanting is advised if you're drinking this young, but with time in the glass a pretty bouquet of apple, pear and iodine begins to take shape. On the palate, the wine is medium-full, sappy and succulent, with more richness and texture than the Aligoté but without its intensity and purity. This would score higher if it weren't for the overt reduction. Ente's constantly delicious Bourgogne Blanc comes from young vines (a portion in the commune of Puligny, planted in 2002, and the rest in the commune of Meursault, planted in 2012), but while it commands a premium over his Aligoté, I tend to prefer the latter.

Tasted blind, this was an exceptional showing for Ente's 2015 Meursault 1er Cru La Goutte d'Or, a beautiful wine that offers up a youthfully reserved bouquet of iodine, citrus oil and white flowers. On the palate, this Goutte d'Or is full-bodied, ample and layered, with terrific cut, concentration and length, its tension and vivacity lending it considerable drama despite its reticence in other respects.

Pale yellow. White pepper, menthol and fresh herbs on the lively nose. Nicely balanced if on the lean side, showing lovely cut and definition to its brisk flavors of lemon oil, orange zest and spices. Firm but not hard. (Ente's Bourgogne Aligoté offers an aromatic nose of orange oil and flowers and a chewy, sappy palate impression, with a surprisingly fleshy old-vines richness to buffer its impression of tautness. It will be worth seeking out. And his Bourgogne Chardonnay, made in a more opulent, even slightly exotic style, is sweet and fine-grained for its appellation, with yellow peach, tangerine and floral flavors leading to a rich, spicy but firm finish. I rated this wine 87-88.)

(from vines planted in the early 1950s): Bright, pale yellow. Ripe, fruity aromas of yellow peach, orange juice and lemon. Sweet and opulent but with good inner-mouth tension; a seductive fruit bomb of a Meursault with a seamless texture. Round, broad and mouthfilling without heaviness, and considerably riper and larger-scaled than the basic village offering.

Vinous (91-93)

(these vines, which Ente says are 120 years old, produced just 14 hectoliters per hectare in 2015): Very bright, pale yellow. Riesling-like reduction to the very pure aromas of pineapple and lemon oil. Rich and chewy in the mouth, with the wine's seamless yellow fruit flavors giving a sweet impression that's nicely countered by a flavor of dusty stone. Ente noted that the ancient vines that he replanted when he started here go into his basic Meursault cuvée. With its bulletproof fruit and underlying minerality, this is a wonderfully plush and complete Meursault in the making.

(Ente's brother Benoit used to make this wine; from vines planted in 1957): Exotic pineapple and lichee scents are lifted by flowers, spices and noble herbs. Broad and round, conveying a strong impression of dry extract and old-vines reserve. The driest of this set of 2015s and very backward: this wine will need time to fill in and express itself. The 2015 Volnay Les Santenots-du-Milieu 1er Cru has a clenched fist of a nose; the aromas are there, but it is almost as if this Volnay wants to keep the aromatics for itself instead of bestowing them upon the imbiber. Perhaps the best adjective is “selfish.” The palate is very well balanced with fine tannin and well-judged acidity that lends tension and energy, but remains very linear and strict in style. This is a Volnay that clearly refuses to come out and play at such a young age, and yet I suspect that it will mature into a very fine specimen with bottle age. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and sappy, with an ample chassis of fine-grained tannin, bright acids, good depth and length, and a solid core. And his Bourgogne Chardonnay, made in a more opulent, even slightly exotic style, is sweet and fine-grained for its appellation, with yellow peach, tangerine and floral flavors leading to a rich, spicy but firm finish. I rated this wine 87-88.)

Vinous (89-92)

Vinous (90-93)

(Ente's brother Benoit used to make this wine; from vines planted in 1957): Exotic pineapple and lichee scents are lifted by flowers, spices and noble herbs. Broad and round, conveying a strong impression of dry extract and old-vines reserve. The driest of this set of 2015s and very backward: this wine will need time to fill in and express itself. Tricky to taste today.

Vinous (91)

A cool, pretty and pure nose reflects notes of various red berries, floral and a hint of earth. There is terrific energy and fine detail to the utterly delicious flavors that possess outstanding depth and length for a regional wine. Recommended.

Wine Advocate (93)

The 2015 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru from Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux reveals a rich bouquet of plum, incense, creamy spice and smoked duck. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and layered, with a fine-grained but firm chassis of tannin which will demand some bottle age, and good depth at the core. Charles Lachaux observes that the Clos de Vougeot, which is not blessed with the domaine's best vine genetics, is one of the parcels which has demonstrated the greatest improvement with biodynamic farming.

The 2015 Echezeaux Grand Cru is very pretty, opening in the glass with notes of sweet cherry, raspberry, cinnamon, rose and spice. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and sappy, with an ample chassis of fine-grained tannin, bright acids, good depth and length, and a solid core. Like most of Charles Lachaux's 2015s, this is shutting down, but it should be exceptional in the fullness of time. This is produced from a parcel in Rouges du Bas: one of the steeper, higher-altitude parts of Echézeaux, where the soil is thinner and the wines tend to be more tensile.

Wine Advocate (94+)

The 2015 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru is one of the more aromatically reticent wines in the range, opening in the glass with notes of coniferous forest floor, raspberry and currant leaf. On the palate, the wine is supple, silky and expansive, with a deep and sapid core of fruit, bright acids, and fine-grained, chalky tannins which assert themselves on the finish. This will need time, but the raw materials are promising.
