France

The vast and diverse wine regions of France, each with its own unique terroirs, grape varieties, and winemaking techniques, are a treasure trove.

In Bordeaux, the birthplace of some of the world's most iconic wines, esteemed vineyards such as Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Haut-Brion produce exceptional red wines, showcasing the art of blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. The region is also renowned for its exquisite white wines, with vineyards like Château d'Yquem and Domaine de Chevalier producing legendary sweet wines.

Moving to Burgundy, the vineyards of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, and Domaine Armand Rousseau capture the essence of the region's revered terroir, crafting exquisite red wines from the Pinot Noir grape. Meanwhile, Domaine Leflaive and Domaine Coche-Dury are celebrated for their world-class white wines, predominantly made from Chardonnay.

The Champagne region, known for its sparkling wines, boasts illustrious houses such as Krug, Dom Pérignon, and Moët & Chandon, as well as grower-producers like Pierre Péters and Jacques Selosse. These vineyards create exceptional sparkling wines using the traditional method, offering a symphony of delicate bubbles, elegant flavors, and vibrant acidity.

In the Rhône Valley, iconic vineyards like Chapoutier, E. Guigal, and Château de Beaucastel produce remarkable red wines in the northern appellations of Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, and Cornas, showcasing the elegance and power of Syrah. Further south, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is celebrated for its rich and full-bodied red blends, with Château Rayas and Clos des Papes leading the way.

In Alsace, vineyards such as Domaine Zind-Humbrecht and omaine Trimbach craft exquisite white wines, including Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris, expressing the region's unique terroir and varietal character.

These are just a few highlights among the diverse array of wines that France offers. From the Loire Valley's crisp whites and elegant reds to the Languedoc-Roussillon's bold and robust wines, each region presents its own vinous treasures.

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (91-94)

Full red, but not darker than the Amoureuses. Sappy, deep aromas of raspberry, minerals and flowers. Offers a very ripe flavor of liqueur-like raspberry but is still quite tightly wound and dominated by its structure. More austere, even monolithic today, and showing less detail than the Amoureuses, perhaps because this was the last wine to be racked. Best now on the long, subtle, stony back end.

Chave’s 2000 Cuvée Cathelin was monumental. It was a privilege to taste, but also a shame to open so early. If the 1991 seemed young, the 2000 came across as a veritable new-born.

(LD210008): Bright gold. Pungent aromas of candied orange, buttered toast, pear skin and vanilla, with a smoky nuance that gains power in the glass. Stains the palate with intense pear liqueur, citrus pith and brioche flavors, picking up notes of licorice and candied ginger with air. A bright mineral note adds lift and energy to the finish, which clings with superb tenacity and lingering smokiness. This complex, concentrated Champagne is showing very well right now but has the legs to age for years to come.

I have always thought this was the best Fleur de Gay since the 1989 and 1990, and it showed extremely well in the 2000 horizontal tastings. Dense ruby/purple, with notes of melted caramel and mocha, along with raspberry and blueberry, the wine has that endearing combination of elegance and power. Layered and multi-dimensional, with silky, sweet tannins, the wine seems to have hit full maturity, where it should last for another 20 or more years. This is a beautiful wine.

Wine Advocate (100)

One of the wines of the vintage, the 2000 has barely budged in its evolution since it was bottled and released in 2002. After ten years in bottle, it still reveals a dense opaque purple color along with a potentially sensational bouquet of blueberries, black currants, graphite, asphalt and background oak. Extremely powerful, full-bodied and superbly concentrated with good acidity and high but round tannins, this massive La Mission-Haut-Brion should take its place among this estate’s most hallowed vintages when it hits full maturity in another one to two decades. I was surprised by just how youthful this wine tasted at age 12. If tasted blind, I would have guessed it to be around 4 to 5 years old. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2050.

In two tastings this garagiste wine performed as if it were one of the wines of the vintage. Proprietor Stefan von Neipperg continues to lavish abundant attention on La Mondotte (as he does with all his estates), and the 2000 (80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc) boasts an inky/blue/purple color in addition to gorgeous aromas of graphite, caramel, toast, blackberries, and creme de cassis. A floral component also emerges as the wine sits in the glass. Extremely dense, full-bodied, and built for another twenty years of cellaring, I thought it would be close to full maturity, but it appears to need another 4-5 years of bottle age. It should age effortlessly for 2-3 decades.

Pressing every advantage afforded by the conditions of 2000, Léoville Barton produced an exceptionally long-lived and aristocratic wine, only just beginning to approach its recommended drinking window – this is classical Bordeaux after all! “This is a behemoth” in the words of Parker, who found that even in 2010 with a decade of age the St-Julien was a “broodingly backward” wine which “makes a mockery of many modern-day consumers wanting a wine for immediate gratification”. A further decade on and this Léoville Barton is finally beginning to unfurl its immense majesty to reveal its classic notes of cassis, cedarwood and dark fruits with impeccably constructed tannins. Parker ends his note, accompanied by a score of 95+ points, with the advice that “those who bought it should continue to exercise patience and be proud to own a wonderful classic with five decades of longevity ahead of it”.

The 2000 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru from Leroy, after having changed a corked bottle, has a fresh bouquet with blackberry, undergrowth, mint and a touch of clove. The palate is vibrant, a Clos Vougeot with a spring in its steps. It does not possess the depth or complexity of the finest Clos Vougeot that I have encountered from Leroy, but there is a beguiling transparency and an edgy, sappy finish that beckons you back for another sip. Fine, but not a bona fide success given expectations. Tasted at Carré des Feuillants restaurant in Paris.

This is a deep yet subtle giant with black truffles, currants, raspberries, and dried flowers. A fabulous nose, amazing already. Full bodied, yet reserved. Absolutely mind blowing on the palate, truly unbelievable. Please don't touch this for another five or six years, this emotional, soulful wine needs the time. Pull the cork in 2016.

Wine Spectator (95)

A wine with a reserved, yet complex nose of blackberries, raspberries and flowers. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a soft, sweet fruit finish. A beautiful wine to taste. Hard not to drink this. Best I have had in years. The real thing. Better than the 1998. Best after 2010. 3,200 cases made. -JS

Wine Advocate (93)

Seemingly fully mature, Michel and Dany Rolland’s seductive 2000 Bon Pasteur reveals a dark garnet/plum color along with a big, sweet kiss of soy, cedar, roasted herbs, blackberries, caramelized black cherries, and hints of smoke and kirsch. This fleshy, full-bodied Pomerol reveals low acidity, a savory, broad mid-palate, and a decade of life ahead of it.

Wine Spectator (96)

Distinctive, with a flash of menthol giving way to a beam of lightly mulled raspberry fruit that carries on through the finish, easily holding sway over the hints of bramble, licorice snap and warm plum compote. Just a touch sedate in feel, perhaps, but if you were a wine with this kind of fruit to burn, wouldn't you just kick back and let it groove too?—Blind 2000 Bordeaux retrospective (December 2015). Drink now through 2030. 500 cases made. — JM

Vinous (90)
