France

The vast and diverse wine regions of France, each with its own unique terroirs, grape varieties, and winemaking techniques, are a treasure trove.

In Bordeaux, the birthplace of some of the world's most iconic wines, esteemed vineyards such as Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Haut-Brion produce exceptional red wines, showcasing the art of blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. The region is also renowned for its exquisite white wines, with vineyards like Château d'Yquem and Domaine de Chevalier producing legendary sweet wines.

Moving to Burgundy, the vineyards of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, and Domaine Armand Rousseau capture the essence of the region's revered terroir, crafting exquisite red wines from the Pinot Noir grape. Meanwhile, Domaine Leflaive and Domaine Coche-Dury are celebrated for their world-class white wines, predominantly made from Chardonnay.

The Champagne region, known for its sparkling wines, boasts illustrious houses such as Krug, Dom Pérignon, and Moët & Chandon, as well as grower-producers like Pierre Péters and Jacques Selosse. These vineyards create exceptional sparkling wines using the traditional method, offering a symphony of delicate bubbles, elegant flavors, and vibrant acidity.

In the Rhône Valley, iconic vineyards like Chapoutier, E. Guigal, and Château de Beaucastel produce remarkable red wines in the northern appellations of Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, and Cornas, showcasing the elegance and power of Syrah. Further south, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is celebrated for its rich and full-bodied red blends, with Château Rayas and Clos des Papes leading the way.

In Alsace, vineyards such as Domaine Zind-Humbrecht and omaine Trimbach craft exquisite white wines, including Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris, expressing the region's unique terroir and varietal character.

These are just a few highlights among the diverse array of wines that France offers. From the Loire Valley's crisp whites and elegant reds to the Languedoc-Roussillon's bold and robust wines, each region presents its own vinous treasures.

This is powerful and steeped with lemon cake, pear, stone and saline flavors. The racy structure sets the pace, and this builds in intensity to a long, stony, spicy aftertaste. On the austere side, yet with the oiliness and concentration that will allow this to age. Best from 2021 through 2033.

The 2014 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Ruchottes is a real classic, opening in the glass with notes of mint, apple, pear and subtle noisette, deftly framed by a touch of reduction and new oak. On the palate, the wine approaches grand cru concentration and depth, with a velouté texture, lovely controlled amplitude and terrific definition and length. While this will only really begin to realize all its potential with 5 or 6 years in the cellar, I confess to having already enjoyed almost a case of this wine off wine lists in Burgundy; every bottle has been superb.

The 2014 Chablis Butteaux 1er Cru from Domaine François Raveneau is drinking beautifully, even though I am fully aware of committing infanticide. It is one of my favorite vineyards – and in my view, an underrated one – from a benchmark Chablis growing season. A stunning, razor-sharp bouquet offers limestone and petrichor aromas, and hints of walnut and shucked oyster shells develop with aeration. That fresh marine influence translates into a palate that displays exquisite balance and just a hint of toffee apple, closing in slightly toward the finish. There is so much tension and grace here. Brilliant.

Here too there is a plethora of Chablis character on the cool, pure and airy aromas that are comprised of smoky white orchard fruit and various citrus scents that are trimmed in just enough wood to remark upon. The racy, intense and intensely mineral-driven medium weight flavors possess a lovely mouth feel before culminating in a textured, balanced and saline finish that is both dry and tightly wound.

The 2014 Chablis Grand Cru Blanchots is a contender for Domaine Raveneau's finest release in this great year for Chablis. It has an extremely well defined, marine-influenced bouquet that delivers captivating intensity. This is a Chablis that looks you straight between the eyes. The palate displays exquisite balance with razor-sharp acidity. It feels so lively and vivacious, with a wonderful sense of harmony and poise towards the finish. This is sophisticated and classy, but it will need 4-6 years to really settle into its groove. You cannot bestow too many superlatives here.

The 2014 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru les Chaignots comes from 1.55 hectares of 60-year-old vines. It has a well defined, slightly masculine bouquet that requires some encouragement. Darker fruit here than the Village Cru, yet still detailed. The palate is brisk and lively on the opening, quite citric in the mouth, darker fruit than say, Mugneret-Gibourg's own Les Chaignots -- but with a brightness and lucidity coming through on the playful finish. Very fine.

The 2014 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has a very well defined, earthy bouquet but backed up by sufficient red berry fruit. Touches of woodland come through with continued aeration, a touch of autumn bonfire. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin. Quite supple in the mouth for a 2014 with touches of tobacco, black pepper and light spices that emerge on the sappy finish. Superb. Tasted at the Domaine.

Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, Groffier's 2014 Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru les Hauts Doix is much more pure on the nose compared to the Les Groseilles from Digioia-Royer, sporting lifted red cherries, wild strawberry and raspberry preserves—vigorous and very focused. The palate is pure and sensual on the entry, the acidity very well judged, with a caressing and long finish laden with black fruit. It needs another couple of years to absorb the oak, but it will be worth the wait. Tasted September 2017.

Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, Groffier's 2014 Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru les Sentiers has an intense bouquet, a mixture of red and black fruit, quite spicy and slightly oriental in style. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, again, spicy and lively with a sappy, saline finish that lingers long in the mouth. (100% vendange entier; 100% new oak):Dark red-ruby. Deep, brooding aromas of medicinal black cherry, licorice and black pepper suggest a very concentrated wine. Denser and more powerful than the Beaux Monts but extremely primary, even a bit youthfully brutal, today. This extremely tactile, extract-rich wine displays serious concentration and outstanding potential but will need extended aging to express itself fully. Tannins are mouthcoating but not dry.

Good dark red. High-pitched, slightly high-toned aromas of raspberry, spices and mint show a slightly exotic character. Fresh, dry and classic in the mouth, offering good juicy, spicy intensity. This wine got only a single pigeage, noted Nicolas Rossignol, as it has a tendency to become overly tannic. A bit dusty on the back end but red licorice and floral notes give it personality and perfumed lift.

Dark cherry, plum, tobacco, licorice, menthol and red-toned fruit are all nicely delineated, while expressive floral notes give the wine a closing flourish of aromatic intensity.
