France

The vast and diverse wine regions of France, each with its own unique terroirs, grape varieties, and winemaking techniques, are a treasure trove.

In Bordeaux, the birthplace of some of the world's most iconic wines, esteemed vineyards such as Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Haut-Brion produce exceptional red wines, showcasing the art of blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. The region is also renowned for its exquisite white wines, with vineyards like Château d'Yquem and Domaine de Chevalier producing legendary sweet wines.

Moving to Burgundy, the vineyards of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, and Domaine Armand Rousseau capture the essence of the region's revered terroir, crafting exquisite red wines from the Pinot Noir grape. Meanwhile, Domaine Leflaive and Domaine Coche-Dury are celebrated for their world-class white wines, predominantly made from Chardonnay.

The Champagne region, known for its sparkling wines, boasts illustrious houses such as Krug, Dom Pérignon, and Moët & Chandon, as well as grower-producers like Pierre Péters and Jacques Selosse. These vineyards create exceptional sparkling wines using the traditional method, offering a symphony of delicate bubbles, elegant flavors, and vibrant acidity.

In the Rhône Valley, iconic vineyards like Chapoutier, E. Guigal, and Château de Beaucastel produce remarkable red wines in the northern appellations of Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, and Cornas, showcasing the elegance and power of Syrah. Further south, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is celebrated for its rich and full-bodied red blends, with Château Rayas and Clos des Papes leading the way.

In Alsace, vineyards such as Domaine Zind-Humbrecht and omaine Trimbach craft exquisite white wines, including Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris, expressing the region's unique terroir and varietal character.

These are just a few highlights among the diverse array of wines that France offers. From the Loire Valley's crisp whites and elegant reds to the Languedoc-Roussillon's bold and robust wines, each region presents its own vinous treasures.

Medium ruby. Black cherry, licorice and crushed stone on the nose, complicated by a smoky nuance. Quite tight today, showing a restrained sweetness. Finishes with firm-edged, slightly tough tannins and excellent length. A very good vintage for this grand cru blend.

Lightish garnet. Like the Richebourg, there is an initial sweetness here. Smells so cool and delicately fragrant. Then on the palate, there is real power, the tannins holding everything in tightly as on the Grands Échezeaux but here the acidity spills around the edges and lifts it to terrific intensity on the palate. Firm, chalky texture but still fluid. Long and so refined that the power is disguised. In the empty glass, there is a return to fruit sweetness, showing the complexity and range in this wine.

  • Domaine de la Romanee-Conti Richebourg Grand Cru 2014 (1x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (96)

The 2014 Richebourg Grand Cru was picked on 20 and 21 September at 29.75 hectoliters per hectare. This has a gorgeous, flamboyant, vivacious bouquet with blossoming red cherries, crushed strawberry, less undergrowth scents compared to the showing in barrel, replaced by pressed rose petal notes. There is wonderful delineation and exuberance here. The palate is medium-bodied with a lively, spicy, white pepper-tinged entry, just a faint hint of black truffle tincturing the dark berry fruit. There is superb backbone and density here, a Richebourg delivering on its promise from barrel, plus it comes armed with an extraordinarily long aftertaste that evokes marine-like images, something wild and estuarine. While not as flattering as the Romanée-Saint-Vivant at the moment, just wait ten years. 1,160 cases produced. Tasted February 2017.

Light to mid garnet. Deeply fruited on the nose, with the promise of both fragrance and superb freshness. A definite herbal/stemmy character on the surface, then along with that an unexpected floral note and a hint of red cherry sweetness. Gloriously fine in texture, layer upon layer of finesse so that it changes back and forth in the glass and builds to complexity and incredible length. As I imagine graphene: immensely fine but with great internal strength.

    Wine Advocate (95)

The 2014 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru was picked on 21, 22 and 23 September cropped at 31.6 hectoliters per hectare. Now this has a distinctly earthy bouquet, one that leads you into the dark woods. Yes, there is plenty of vivacious red berry fruit, here augmented with something autumnal, brown leaves on an October morning, moss and tree bark. Then with continued aeration, these shift away and are replaced by pure floral aromas. The palate is very precise on the entry with a touch of orange rind and mandarin complementing the crushed strawberry and raspberry fruit; there is a touch of spiciness towards the finish that exerts a gentle, yet insistent grip à la Richebourg. • Domaine Faiveley Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2014 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (90)

Medium red. Strawberry liqueur, dried rose and peppery herbs on the nose. Silky in texture but a bit backward and medicinal, even rustic, offering cranberry, spice and herb flavors and a slight peppery greenness. I find this a bit herbal and shallow for grand cru. Needs time but will it blossom and fill out? Nicely delineated and aromatic but lacks the depth and full ripeness of the best wines here in 2014. This parcel located just below Chambertin is part of Faiveley's acquisition of Domaine Dupont-Tisserandot in late 2013.

Good full red. Scented aromas of blackberry, cassis, licorice, menthol and herbs (some stems were used here) are rather cool for the year and a bit forbidding. Supple on entry, then quite tight in the middle palate, with dark berry, crushed cherry, spice and menthol flavors leading to a firmly tannic, slightly dusty finish. • Domaine Jamet Cote-Rotie 2014 (6x75cl)

    James Suckling (95-96)

Plenty of violets, pepper and deep-set spices are all part of the equation here, and this is a very complex Côte Rôtie that has a wealth of darkly stony notes, coal smoke and dark chocolate. Just superb! The palate's succulent and swathed in plush, fine tannins that envelop black- and red-plum flavors. Plenty of volume, great elegance and a lot of detail. A vintage when experienced makers could still shine, and the sorting in the vineyard was clearly a large part of this. Classy wine with so much on offer. Best from 2020 for a decade or more. Tasted in tank shortly before bottling.

  • Domaine Leroy Nuits-Saint-Georges Aux Allots 2014 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (92)

Translucent red cherry fruit and lifted aromatics make a strong first impression in the 2014 Nuits-Saint-Georges Aux Allots. Beams of supporting tannin and a burst of saline-infused energy give the 2014 its shape. The 2014 is clearly still recovering from its bottling. Still, the wine's focus is admirable. In many ways, the Aux Allots encapsulates the nervous yet precise, sinewy personality of the year. Next to the other village-level wines the Aux Allots is a bit compact.

The 2014 Romanée St. Vivant is a bit reduced today, but it possesses striking depth and density. This is an especially dark, dense RSV, and yet there is plenty of underlying grip. Readers will have to be especially patient, as the 2014 does not appear like it will drink at its best anytime soon. A finish endowed with substantial tannin and high acidity only reinforces that impression.

Fat and sweet on entry, then a bit more clenched in the middle, conveying terrific depth to the flavors of cherry, redcurrant and crushed rock. • Drouhin-Laroze Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2014 (6x75cl)

The 2014 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru includes around 35% whole bunch fruit and around 60% new oak. It has an open, quite transparent bouquet with mineral-tinged black fruit, a hint of Seville orange marmalade lurking in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin that lends this Bonnes-Mares good backbone and a little more masculinity than previous vintages. I like the density here, but it just needs to flow a little more towards the strict, linear finish.

At once dense and taut, with savory, firm-edged flavors of cranberry, minerals and white pepper giving the middle palate an incisive character. The 2014 Duhart-Milon is a wine that performs shockingly well, far better than I would have expected given its showing just after bottling. Here, it has a detailed, focused bouquet with graphite infused black fruit, smoke and cedar aromas. Quintessential Pauillac. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit attired with a subtle marine influence, seaweed and oyster shell. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, the 2014 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru from Dujac was one of the talking points of the tasting. It performed extremely well compared to its peers (note that this is a domaine bottling and not Dujac Fils & Père). It has quite an intense bouquet with signs of some whole bunch addition but backed with plenty of dark red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with good body and substance, well-judged acidity, perhaps with the whole bunch defining the wine more than the terroir at this early juncture, although that will not always be the case. Give this time in bottle if you want the birthplace of this wine to express itself. Dujac lovers should have some of this in their cellars—very, very impressive. Tasted September 2017.

The palate is very precise on the entry with a touch of orange rind and mandarin complementing the crushed strawberry and raspberry fruit; there is a touch of spiciness towards the finish that exerts a gentle, yet insistent grip à la Richebourg. The persistence here is very impressive and it just seems to blossom in the glass until you have utterly succumbed to its charms. 1,756 cases produced. Tasted February 2017.

  • Domaine Faiveley Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Chaignots 2014 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (90+)

Good full red. Scented aromas of blackberry, cassis, licorice, menthol and herbs (some stems were used here) are rather cool for the year and a bit forbidding. Supple on entry, then quite tight in the middle palate, with dark berry, crushed cherry, spice and menthol flavors leading to a firmly tannic, slightly dusty finish. Showing little obvious sweetness today, this youthfully tough wine is in need of patience.

  • Domaine Georges Roumier Bonnes Mares Grand Cru 2014 (1x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (97)

The 2014 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has a fragrant, floral bouquet with touches of blueberry, violet, wet limestone and effervescent blood orange. There is simply wonderful delineation here. The palate is very well structured, linear and strict in accordance with the vintage, driving acidity here maintaining the freshness with superb minerality on the finish. Oh yes. Yes. Yes. Yes.

  • Domaine Leroy Romanee-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru 2014 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (96)

The 2014 Romanée St. Vivant is a bit reduced today, but it possesses striking depth and density. This is an especially dark, dense RSV, and yet there is plenty of underlying grip. Readers will have to be especially patient, as the 2014 does not appear like it will drink at its best anytime soon. A finish endowed with substantial tannin and high acidity only reinforces that impression.

The 2014 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brulées is a wine of raw, unbridled power. Dense and also deeply expressive, but very much in need of time to come together, the Brulées is super-impressive. Smoke, scorched earth and driven red-toned notes give the 2014 its distinctively pungent, bold personality.

  • Domaine Trapet Pere et Fils Chapelle Chambertin Grand Cru 2014 (6x75cl)

Palish medium red. Ripe, musky aromas of redcurrant, plum, smoke, dried flowers and earth. Fat and sweet on entry, then a bit more clenched in the middle, conveying terrific depth to the flavors of cherry, redcurrant and crushed rock. This distinctly salty, soil-driven 2014 finishes with fine-grained tannins and terrific mounting length. Chapelle's warmer terroir often outperforms in cooler vintages.

  • Drouhin-Laroze Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2014 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (90-92)

The 2014 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru includes around 35% whole bunch fruit and around 60% new oak. It has an open, quite transparent bouquet with mineral-tinged black fruit, a hint of Seville orange marmalade lurking in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin that lends this Bonnes-Mares good backbone and a little more masculinity than previous vintages. I like the density here, but it just needs to flow a little more towards the strict, linear finish.

Bright medium red. Strong oak tones partly mask aromas of red berries, rose petal and medicinal menthol. At once dense and taut, with savory, firm-edged flavors of cranberry, minerals and white pepper giving the middle palate an incisive character. Not a fleshy wine--in fact a bit youthfully compressed today--but finishes perfumed, focused and long, with pepper and saline mineral notes displaying a slightly tart edge.

  • Duhart-Milon 2014 (12x75cl)

    Vinous - Neal Martin (93)

The 2014 Duhart-Milon is a wine that performs shockingly well, far better than I would have expected given its showing just after bottling. Here, it has a detailed, focused bouquet with graphite infused black fruit, smoke and cedar aromas. Quintessential Pauillac. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit attired with a subtle marine influence, seaweed and oyster shell. I admire the crescendo of this Pauillac, the manner in which it builds in concentration with a precise and quite powerful finish, without losing any of its precision. Superb. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

  • Dujac Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru 2014 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (94)

The 2014 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru has a detailed bouquet that stops you in your tracks. There is genuine mineraité and tension already locked in here, aromatics that are beautifully focused and almost Richebourg-like in style. • Egly-Ouriet Brut Grand Cru Millesime 2014 (6x75cl)

One of the very finest wines produced in this less heralded vintage is Egly's 2014 Brut Grand Cru Millésime, a strikingly vinous and enveloping Champagne that wafts from the glass with aromas of pear, mirabelle plum, freshly baked bread, almond paste and honeycomb. Full-bodied, satiny and layered, its textural attack segues into a deep, concentrated mid-palate of exceptional purity and cut, concluding with a long, penetrating and mouthwateringly saline finish. As ever, it's a blend of some 70% Pinot Noir with 30% Chardonnay from Ambonnay's greatest terroirs.
