France

The vast and diverse wine regions of France, each with its own unique terroirs, grape varieties, and winemaking techniques, are a treasure trove.

In Bordeaux, the birthplace of some of the world's most iconic wines, esteemed vineyards such as Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Haut-Brion produce exceptional red wines, showcasing the art of blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. The region is also renowned for its exquisite white wines, with vineyards like Château d'Yquem and Domaine de Chevalier producing legendary sweet wines.

Moving to Burgundy, the vineyards of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, and Domaine Armand Rousseau capture the essence of the region's revered terroir, crafting exquisite red wines from the Pinot Noir grape. Meanwhile, Domaine Leflaive and Domaine Coche-Dury are celebrated for their world-class white wines, predominantly made from Chardonnay.

The Champagne region, known for its sparkling wines, boasts illustrious houses such as Krug, Dom Pérignon, and Moët & Chandon, as well as grower-producers like Pierre Péters and Jacques Selosse. These vineyards create exceptional sparkling wines using the traditional method, offering a symphony of delicate bubbles, elegant flavors, and vibrant acidity.

In the Rhône Valley, iconic vineyards like Chapoutier, E. Guigal, and Château de Beaucastel produce remarkable red wines in the northern appellations of Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, and Cornas, showcasing the elegance and power of Syrah. Further south, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is celebrated for its rich and full-bodied red blends, with Château Rayas and Clos des Papes leading the way.

In Alsace, vineyards such as Domaine Zind-Humbrecht and omaine Trimbach craft exquisite white wines, including Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris, expressing the region's unique terroir and varietal character.

These are just a few highlights among the diverse array of wines that France offers. From the Loire Valley's crisp whites and elegant reds to the Languedoc-Roussillon's bold and robust wines, each region presents its own vinous treasures.

    Vinous - Antonio Galloni (90-92)

The 2014 Le Crock is soft, voluptuous and quite expressive, with the fruit pushed forward and silky tannins to round things out. Today, the flavors are quite primary, but it is the wine's textural harmony and overall balance that stand out most. Hints of plum, crème de cassis, cloves and new leather meld into the inviting finish. Even with all of its richness, the 2014 Le Crock preserves lovely freshness and perfume. The blend is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc.

The palate is fresh on the entry with citrus peel and fresh Granny Smith, well judged acidity and a bright and lively finish. This is precisely what you want from a Bourgogne Blanc. One of the stars of the vintage, the 2014 Les Carmes Haut-Brion is total knock-out. Graphite, smoke, red cherry jam, spice, cured meat, pomegranate and tobacco are just some of the myriad sensations that race out of the glass. Today, the 2014 is gloriously ample on the palate, with remarkable nuance for a wine of its size. The Carmes Haut-Brion has been terrific in two recent tastings. Healthy full red. Slightly high-toned aromas of raspberry, coffee and minerals, plus a positive vegetal nuance that reminded me of the young 2015. Creamy-sweet and highly concentrated, showing a lovely balance of sucrosité and acidity. Quite silky and stylish, especially for Nuits-Saint-Georges. Good bright medium red. Aromas of raspberry, rose petal, minerals and crushed stone convey a very sexy, slightly high-toned liqueur-like quality. Dense, fine-grained and taut, displaying piquant mineral energy and mouthwatering acidity to its flavors of raspberry, cherry and blood orange. Really compelling inner-mouth tension here. The 2014 Santenots is a big wine within the context of Volnay, and yet all the elements are deftly balanced. Lalou Bize-Leroy reports that there was quite a bit of hail in 2014. And the wine? It is superb. It's as simple as that.

  • Leroy Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Aux Brulees 2014 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (94+)

The 2014 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brulées is a wine of raw, unbridled power. Dense and also deeply expressive, but very much in need of time to come together, the Brulées is super-impressive. Smoke, scorched earth and driven red-toned notes give the 2014 its distinctively pungent, bold personality.

  • Leroy Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts 2014 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (95)

Gravitas and power are two of the signatures of Leroy's 2014 Vosne-Romanée Les Beaux Monts. The flavors and textures are boldly sketched. Layers of dark-fleshed fruit add to the wine's virile intensity and overall feel. This deep, resonant Vosne is going to require a good bit of patience. Even so, it is fascinating to contemplate at this early stage in its life. In 2014, the Beaux Monts is a wine that speaks with a strong, distinctive voice.

  • Les Carmes Haut-Brion 2014 (6x75cl)

    Vinous - Antonio Galloni (95+)

One of the stars of the vintage, the 2014 Les Carmes Haut-Brion is total knock-out. Graphite, smoke, red cherry jam, spice, cured meat, pomegranate and tobacco are just some of the myriad sensations that race out of the glass. Today, the 2014 is gloriously ample on the palate, with remarkable nuance for a wine of its size. The Carmes Haut-Brion has been terrific in two recent tastings. The blend is 54 % Cabernet Franc, 32 % Merlot and 14 % Cabernet Sauvignon, all aged in oak, but with some influence of 500-liter tonneaux and 12-hectoliter casks. Simon Blanchard is the consulting oenologist. Tasted two times.

  • Lions Batailley 2014 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (89)

The 2014 Lions de Batailley was the first vintage albeit one produced in a small quantity as a test, according to proprietor Philippe Castèja. It has an attractive bouquet with dense blackberry, crushed strawberry, bay leaf and cedar scents that unfold nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin, grippy in the mouth with good density and freshness on the graphite-tinged finish. Frankly, it is as good as some of the Grand Vins from the 1990s.

  • Louis Boillot Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers 2014 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (92)

Healthy full red. Slightly high-toned aromas of raspberry, coffee and minerals, plus a positive vegetal nuance that reminded me of the young 2015. Creamy-sweet and highly concentrated, showing a lovely balance of sucrosité and acidity. Quite silky and stylish, especially for Nuits-Saint-Georges. The tannins are more successfully integrated today than those of the Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles, which will allow this rather powerful wine to give pleasure earlier. Impressively long on the aftertaste.

  • Louis Jadot (Gagey) Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Boudots 2014 (6x75cl)

    James Suckling (93)

Crushed strawberries and hints of raspberries as well as citrus on the nose follow through to a medium to full body, salty undertones and a stoney finish. Intense and very spicy. Drink in 2020 but already delicious.

  • Louis Jadot Clos-Saint-Denis Grand Cru 2014 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (94-96)

The 2014 Clos St Denis Grand Cru, from 55-year-old vines (more or less), has a very pure, delineated, sophisticated bouquet with captivating purity. It is actually more Clos de la Roche in style! The palate is very sensual on the entry with dark plum, sea salt and a hint of juniper berry. The tannins are fine but form a framework around the long finish, completing an impressive and delicious Clos Saint Denis from Jadot.

  • Louis Jadot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques 2014 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (93+)

Good bright medium red. Aromas of raspberry, rose petal, minerals and crushed stone convey a very sexy, slightly high-toned liqueur-like quality. Dense, fine-grained and taut, displaying piquant mineral energy and mouthwatering acidity to its flavors of raspberry, cherry and blood orange. Really compelling inner-mouth tension here. This firmly tannic, classic 2014 finishes with lovely rising floral length. I would not be at all surprised if a decade of cellaring brought an even higher score.
