Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (92-95)

Deep red with ruby highlights. Knockout nose combines raspberry, peony, spices, blood orange and a whiff of pepper. Wonderfully sweet and silky in the mouth and yet with a steely impression of spine. Boasts lovely clarity and penetration and finishes with superb sappy persistence. This was finished with its malo but had not yet been racked. Roumier combined the red and white soil components of this wine at the outset but kept one barrel of each separate: on this day, the wine was dominated by the almost painful cut that comes from the white soil but with more time the red soil component will fill in the middle palate.

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (92-94)

(vinified with almost 50% whole clusters) Good deep red. Captivating, high-pitched aromas of dark berries, blood orange, violet, spices and minerals. Juicy, classic and penetrating, with superb cut and floral perfume in the middle palate. Boasts compelling subtle sweetness and clarity, and finishes with a serious spine of tannins and acids. A very serious young wine, very much in the style of a mini-Musigny. Should be a beauty.

The 2007 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru has a slightly deeper hue compared to the 2000. Red berry fruit is laced with morels, pressed rose petals, leather and incense, quite complex and involving. The palate is medium-bodied with commendable depth considering the season. Pure red fruit with wonderful piquancy, hints of white pepper and clove lead towards quite a weighty and compelling finish. This surpasses my expectations and constitutes an impressive 2007 that is à point. Tasted blind at the Roumier Les Cras vertical at Medlar, London.

One of the most profound wines in the vintage is unquestionable the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee les Grenache de Pierre, which is 100% Grenache, from sandy soils in the la Crau lieu-dit, raised all in concrete tanks and bottled unfiltered. Its deep ruby color is followed by an incredible bouquet of black cherries, black raspberries, licorice, dried herbs and garrigue. Deep, layered, gorgeously concentrated and ultra-fine, with sweet, ripe tannin and an incredible elegance, drink this sensational juice anytime over the coming 10-15 years.

The 2007 Extra-Brut Vintage Celebris is a great example of the house style. Powerful and rich, the 2007 possesses tremendous vinous intensity, buffered by low dosage that gives the wine ts sense if classic austerity. Orchard fruit, apricot, tangerine oil and white flowers develop with a bit of coaxing. The Celebris is a big, broad-shouldered Champagne for the dinner table.

A similar extroverted, sexy style to the '09, just on a slightly smaller scale, the 2007 Hermitage Ex Voto offers sensational black raspberry, creme de cassis, creamy licorice and crushed flower-like aromas and flavors, with the telltale minerality/graphite of the Hermitage Hill coming through with time in the glass. While aged close to four years in 100% new French oak, you'd never know it by tasting it. This full-bodied, beautifully concentrated, layered and already approachable beauty will have another 30+ years of drinkability.

Jeb Dunnuck (97)

The 2007 E. Guigal Hermitage Blanc Ex-Voto comes from 2 parcels, 90% from Les Murets, and 10% from L’Hermite, and is a blend of 90% Marsanne, and 10% Roussanne that spends 18 months in new oak casks. It exhibits decadent, rich aromatics and gets better and better with air, yielding ripe stone fruits, honeysuckle, buttered bread, and gorgeous background minerality and smoky notes. Full and round on the nose, the palate follows suit with a powerful, full bodied texture (that amazingly stays light and balanced), thick, rich fruit, and a focused, blockbuster finish that’s loaded with edgy minerality and wet stone. Jaw dropping good and this powerful, yet elegant beauty should drink well for 15+ years.

Bright pale yellow. Soft citrus fruits and crushed rock on the musky, slightly reduced nose. Rich, perfumed and tightly coiled, with a terrific core of acidity intensifying the orange, floral and mineral flavors. Offers compelling cut and concentration but this infant will require several years of aging. Wonderfully refined Perrieres of grand cru class.

Tasted at BI Wine & Spirits' 10-Years-On tasting, the 2007 Haut Brion has a perfumed bouquet with abundant red fruit, sage, sandalwood and black olive scents that just seem to soar from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, beautifully judged acidity and a gentle build in the mouth towards the savory/meaty finish. There is class interwoven into this Haut Brion from start to finish, and the persistence is very impressive. This is just reaching its drinking plateau. Tasted February 2017.

Good medium red. Highly perfumed nose combines raspberry, strawberry, cocoa powder, white pepper, blood orange and a resiny headshop spiciness. Pungent, complex and weightless; a wonderfully lively, delicate wine with sneaky intensity and superb penetrating energy and lift. Finishes dry and understated. Suave rather than large. My recorked bottle lost some verve with 24 hours, suggesting that this wine is probably best for mid-term drinking-say, beginning in five years. But that brilliant nose can't be duplicated anywhere outside the northern C o te de Nuits. Van Canneyt told me he doesn't consider 2007 to be a great year for this domain and that he prefers the 2008s for their depth of fruit and texture.

Decadent and rich with mango, papaya, citrus, and mineral. Slate too. Full-bodied, dry and fruity. It really shows great length and complexity. First vintage of this single vineyard wine from the best parcel of the Schonenberg. Contrasty. Drink now.

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (88-91)

Musky nose is dominated by pungent smoky minerality and crushed stone. Then fatter and chewier than the village wine, with more smoky oak and brown spices showing. Finishes with a note of tobacco. Seems less pristine and distinctive than the village wine, but there's more wine here. A sample from a second barrel was still quite bound-up, showing musky strawberry and mocha notes and a bit more clarity.

Bright, deep red. Knockout aromas and flavors of black cherry, black raspberry, crushed stone and smoky minerality. Wonderfully deep, tangy and sweet, with a captivating creamy texture making this deceptively tastable today. Impressive today for its volume, and finishes very long, broad and classically dry, with substantial fine-grained tannins. As delicious as this is right now, its overall balance suggests it will reward a decade of aging. For his part, Mugnier says that virtually every vintage of his Musigny needs ten years in the bottle.

(in barrel) Bright yellow. Lemon, lime, menthol and mint on the nose. Dense and sappy, with pungent minerality and captivating sugar/acid cut. Finishes with a strong flavor of crushed stone. Offers terrific potential.

Burghound (90-93)

A ripe, fresh, elegant, expressive and classy nose of green apple, pear and a hint of honeysuckle trimmed in a bit of wood toast leads to rich, full and impressively concentrated flavors that possess palate staining intensity on the opulent, powerful and explosive finish. This is a big but balanced effort.

Whereas Selosse's vintage bottling was formerly derived exclusively from Avize, the 2007 Extra-Brut Millésime is the first that draws on all the estate's holdings, with the vins clairs chosen in a blind tasting. Wafting from the glass with aromas of yellow apple, toasted almonds, nougat, shortbread, warm spices, honeycomb and white flowers, it's full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, with incisive acids, chalky structure and a tensile profile. A bottle drunk in Burgundy several weeks after my visit to the domaine was just as striking.

From Gerine and Landonne: Red and dark berries on the nose. Deeper dark berries and cherry on the palate, with firm tannins adding grip and cracked pepper lending energy. From Chavaroche and Fongeant: Wild perfume of botanical herbs, cherry skin, tobacco and smoked meat. This component gives the animal quality to the wine, Jamet said. From Lancement and Le Plomb: Rich and smoky, with deep cherry and cassis flavors and gentle tannins. From Mornachon: Exotic cherry-cola, coconut and baking spices on the nose. Fleshy and sweet, with deep dark fruit flavors and good back-end sweetness. A demi-muid from Mornachon: Explosively perfumed bouquet of ripe red berries, incense and potpourri. Luscious and concentrated, with sweet red and dark berry flavors and an exotic floral pastille quality. From Moutonnes, Cote Baudin and Leyat: Intensely smoky nose offers a complex set of red fruit and floral aromas and a strong note of graphite. Impressively pure and sweet, with strong raspberry and kirsch flavors and gentle tannins. A demi-muid, from Lancement and Le Plomb: Strikingly perfumed bouquet of red berries, violet, rose and black pepper. Juicy, finely etched raspberry and wild strawberry flavors boast excellent depth and very good clarity. The final wine should be graceful and impressively complex, with vivid red fruit flavors and supple texture.

From Peleat: Peach, apricot and a wild note of botanical herbs on the nose. Deep pit fruit and melon on the palate, with tarragon and lemon emerging with air. Very good grip on the finish. From Rocoules: Very spicy, with vivid lemon and lime scents and a strong undercurrent of tangy minerals. Focused and pure, with superb depth and clarity. From Meal: Very rich, with creamy peach and floral honey character. Shows pliant pit fruit and poached pear on the palate, with a spine of zesty minerals. The Chaves call this site Petit Meal. From L' Hermite: Stunning mineral, orange and licorice aromas reminded me of a grand cru Burgundy. Fresh, energetic and focused, with pure citrus and orchard fruit flavors and excellent mineral cut. The final blend should be a knockout mix of depth and energy.

Vinous - Neal Martin (98)

The 2007 L’Extravagant de Doisy-Daëne has a ripe and generous bouquet with orange pith, apricot, crème brûlée and quince, unfurling beautifully in the glass. The palate is supremely well balanced with fine definition, wonderful acidity and a composed, almost Tokaji-like finish that lingers with enticing marmalade and quince notes. So precise. So delicious.

(64% merlot, 30% cabernet sauvignon and 6% cabernet franc) Good medium ruby to the rim. Pure, enticing aromas of sweet, ripe black raspberry, licorice and bitter chocolate. Supple, fruit-driven and easygoing, with juicy acidity giving a firm edge to the dark raspberry flavor. Not especially long but suave and tasty.
