Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)This comes from the Echezeaux du Dessus, a plot purchased in the 1960s which must have been almost immediately replanted as the vines are now 50 years old. 30% whole bunch vinification and 70% of the cuvée is in new wood but we tasted from a one year old barrel. Equally dense purple in colour. Haunting qualities with real depth. Firm and forceful, some fine-grained tannins, covered with a wealth of rich red fruit including some strawberries. |

Vinous (90-91)The 2017 Echézeaux Grand Cru is completely de-stemmed. It has a slightly conservative bouquet with pure dark cherry and cranberry aromas, but does not quite deliver the nuance and complexity of the best wines from this vineyard in 2017. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, but very strict and stoic, tight-lipped towards the finish. Hopefully this will gain more personality once it is in bottle. |

Vinous (93-95)The 2018 Echézeaux Grand Cru, which is completely de-stemmed, has a very intense, almost heady bouquet with layers of black cherry and cassis fruit; a dash of black pepper emerges with time. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent tannins, and very powerful for this vineyard, but it manages to maintain balance. The finish offers great length and satisfying freshness to counterbalance the fruit intensity. This might well be the pick of Prieur’s reds this year. |

Burghound (91-93)Once again there is noticeable wood framing the spicy red and dark currant scents where more aromatic breadth is present in the form of Asian-style tea and lavender wisps. There is a lovely sense of energy to the focused middle weight flavors that possess even better depth and persistence on the balanced finale. While this is certainly pretty and has enough stuffing to reward mid-term cellaring, it is not nearly as dense and powerful as it usually is. |

More positively, the velvety, round and utterly seductive large-scaled flavors are brimming with dry extract on the mouth coating and quite serious finish that displays sensational length and stunning complexity. This is a powerful Ech that is also clearly built to age. Note that my rating implicitly assumes that the reduction displayed by the nose will eventually dissipate as it does not show up on the palate. |
