France

The vast and diverse wine regions of France, each with its own unique terroirs, grape varieties, and winemaking techniques, are a treasure trove.

In Bordeaux, the birthplace of some of the world's most iconic wines, esteemed vineyards such as Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Haut-Brion produce exceptional red wines, showcasing the art of blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. The region is also renowned for its exquisite white wines, with vineyards like Château d'Yquem and Domaine de Chevalier producing legendary sweet wines.

Moving to Burgundy, the vineyards of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, and Domaine Armand Rousseau capture the essence of the region's revered terroir, crafting exquisite red wines from the Pinot Noir grape. Meanwhile, Domaine Leflaive and Domaine Coche-Dury are celebrated for their world-class white wines, predominantly made from Chardonnay.

The Champagne region, known for its sparkling wines, boasts illustrious houses such as Krug, Dom Pérignon, and Moët & Chandon, as well as grower-producers like Pierre Péters and Jacques Selosse. These vineyards create exceptional sparkling wines using the traditional method, offering a symphony of delicate bubbles, elegant flavors, and vibrant acidity.

In the Rhône Valley, iconic vineyards like Chapoutier, E. Guigal, and Château de Beaucastel produce remarkable red wines in the northern appellations of Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, and Cornas, showcasing the elegance and power of Syrah. Further south, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is celebrated for its rich and full-bodied red blends, with Château Rayas and Clos des Papes leading the way.

In Alsace, vineyards such as Domaine Zind-Humbrecht and omaine Trimbach craft exquisite white wines, including Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris, expressing the region's unique terroir and varietal character.

These are just a few highlights among the diverse array of wines that France offers. From the Loire Valley's crisp whites and elegant reds to the Languedoc-Roussillon's bold and robust wines, each region presents its own vinous treasures.

Vinous (96-98)

The 2021 Chambertin Grand Cru is represented by three barrels this year, two new, with 50% whole bunches (pédicelles). It has superb mineralité and tension, full of electricity and breeding. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, very harmonious with a silky texture, pixelated on the finish that feels so pure and ethereal. Simply, one of the best Chambertins in this vintage.

(aging in two new Remond barrels): Bright, dark red. Deep, brooding aromas of black cherry and smoke are currently muted by a bit of reduction. Then wonderfully sweet, silky and seamless on the palate, conveying an incredibly suave texture and great inner-mouth perfume to the complex flavors of dark berries, earth and smoky oak. Very classy juice; Boillot told me he used the same precise barrique for the Volnay Champans and that he plans to use more Remond barrels in the future. The rising, subtly spicy finish shows uncanny energy and a lighter touch than the Clos de Bèze. A knockout.

Vinous (90-92)

The 2017 Chambertin Grand Cru, which is completely de-stemmed, has quite an understated, elegant bouquet for this vineyard, hints of salted liquorice infusing the black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin - an assertive Chambertin that feels strict and, unlike the aromatics, quite penetrating. Yet, I seek a little more nuance and preferably more red fruit towards the finish. It just needs to loosen its tie.

The 2018 Chambertin Grand Cru is completely de-stemmed and has a lovely blackberry, briar and mineral-driven bouquet that feels well defined and vivacious. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, very grippy tannins that lacquer the mouth. This is a bold, assertive Chambertin; what it needs is a little more nuance and precision toward the finish. Maybe that will evolve with time.

Bright, deep red. Reticent but highly complex scents of raspberry, rose petal, white pepper, red licorice and mint. At once silky and sharply delineated, conveying outstanding intensity without any undue weight. Utterly seamless Chambertin if a bit youthfully linear today. The very long, rising finish is lightly saline and classically dry. Fourrier told me he has no plans to produce more than 30% as much négociant wine as domain wine in future years.

A reserved, cool and inexpressive nose requires aggressive swirling to eventually liberate its high-toned aromas of essence of red cherry, just turned earth and plenty of sauvage nuances. There is absolutely superb intensity to the super-sleek texture of the broad-shouldered flavors thanks to the fine-grained tannins that also shape the moderately austere and equally long finish. This is genuinely stunning though very much built-to-age.

The 2009 Chambertin is one of the wines of the vintage. It is also the least obvious of the 2009 grand crus. This isn’t an immediate wine, rather it is a Burgundy that challenges all of the senses with sublime understated personality. Time spent with the wine is immensely rewarding, as the Chambertin is constantly changing in the glass, challenging the taster to keep up with its sheer pedigree. This is all nuance and class.
