France

The vast and diverse wine regions of France, each with its own unique terroirs, grape varieties, and winemaking techniques, are a treasure trove.

In Bordeaux, the birthplace of some of the world's most iconic wines, esteemed vineyards such as Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Haut-Brion produce exceptional red wines, showcasing the art of blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. The region is also renowned for its exquisite white wines, with vineyards like Château d'Yquem and Domaine de Chevalier producing legendary sweet wines.

Moving to Burgundy, the vineyards of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, and Domaine Armand Rousseau capture the essence of the region's revered terroir, crafting exquisite red wines from the Pinot Noir grape. Meanwhile, Domaine Leflaive and Domaine Coche-Dury are celebrated for their world-class white wines, predominantly made from Chardonnay.

The Champagne region, known for its sparkling wines, boasts illustrious houses such as Krug, Dom Pérignon, and Moët & Chandon, as well as grower-producers like Pierre Péters and Jacques Selosse. These vineyards create exceptional sparkling wines using the traditional method, offering a symphony of delicate bubbles, elegant flavors, and vibrant acidity.

In the Rhône Valley, iconic vineyards like Chapoutier, E. Guigal, and Château de Beaucastel produce remarkable red wines in the northern appellations of Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, and Cornas, showcasing the elegance and power of Syrah. Further south, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is celebrated for its rich and full-bodied red blends, with Château Rayas and Clos des Papes leading the way.

In Alsace, vineyards such as Domaine Zind-Humbrecht and omaine Trimbach craft exquisite white wines, including Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris, expressing the region's unique terroir and varietal character.

These are just a few highlights among the diverse array of wines that France offers. From the Loire Valley's crisp whites and elegant reds to the Languedoc-Roussillon's bold and robust wines, each region presents its own vinous treasures.

  • Drouhin-Laroze Chambertin-Clos-de-Beze Grand Cru 2014 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (92+)

Bright medium red. Strong oak tones partly mask aromas of red berries, rose petal and medicinal menthol. At once dense and taut, with savory, firm-edged flavors of cranberry, minerals and white pepper giving the middle palate an incisive character. Not a fleshy wine--in fact a bit youthfully compressed today--but finishes perfumed, focused and long, with pepper and saline mineral notes displaying a slightly tart edge.

  • Drouhin-Laroze Chambertin-Clos-de-Beze Grand Cru 2015 (12x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (93-95)

The 2015 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru is raised in 80% new oak with 20% whole bunch. It has a very detailed and focused bouquet with precise blackberry, raspberry and morello cherry aromas neatly infused with mineral scents. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, powerful without losing control and building towards a very structured, spicy finish. Whilst I would still dial down the oak to 50-60%, nevertheless it remains a very well-crafted Chambertin with plenty of substance and ambition, and that ain't a bad thing when you are a Clos-de-Bèze.

    Vinous (95-97)

The 2018 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru includes 30% whole-bunch fruit, though this is the one grand cru where you cannot detect the stem addition, just the copious dark cherry, raspberry, cedar and undergrowth aromas that gain intensity in the glass. The palate is supple on the entry, the acidity neatly counterbalancing the intensity of the fruit. This Clos-de-Bèze has real grip and an arching structure on the finish, suggesting that it will be a seriously long-lived wine. Excellent.

All of the family's fruit is toward the bottom of Clos de B ze, around the "Ici Commence le Chambertin" sign and the stone hut, or la cabotte. Sultry and bold, this is packed with floral and branch notes, likely thanks in part to the 30% whole bunches. The palate follows on with black currants and a supremely firm wall of finely-grained tannins. There's crushed slate and grilled meat notes along with spice in spades on the long and notably refreshing finish. Don't rush to open this one. 2026-48

The medium-bodied palate delivers supple tannins and perfectly judged acidity. Quite Rousseau-like in style, with a classic, multidimensional, somehow "complete" finish. Outstanding. Deep ruby-red. Stubbornly backward, smoky nose. Firm, tight, and wrapped up in its own structure today. Showing less texture today than the Mazis. But spicy and sharply delineated. Finishes with superb length and a firm tannic spine. This will require a good eight to ten years of cellaring. From grapes harvested on October 4, with 12.6% potential alcohol.

  • Faiveley Chambertin-Clos De Beze Grand Cru 2007 (6x75cl)

    Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (93-95)

Saturated dark red. Knockout nose combines liqueur-like raspberry, coffee, smoke, licorice and brown spices. Tightly coiled and powerful, conveying an impression of energy but at the same time sweeter and more harmonious than the Mazis. Perhaps best today on the extremely long, palate-staining finish, which features an almost electric impression of precision and complex suggestions of minerals, coffee and spices. Hervet describes 2007 as a vintage that offers great transparency of terroir, and this wine could serve as Exhibit A.

Bright medium red. Deep, musky nose combines cranberry, raspberry, cardamom, faded rose and crushed stone. Sweet, seamless and energetic, offering almost painful cut to the tart red berry, spice and musky underbrush flavors. Outstanding savory lift in the middle palate. Wonderfully lightness of touch here. Very backward wine with all the Cos de Bèze food groups: red fruits, minerals, spices, flowers, crushed stone. Stains the palate and leaves the taste buds quivering on the very long, firm finish. But still a baby today and in need of a decade of cellaring.

Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, Faiveley's 2014 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru has a ravishing, pure and sensual bouquet with red cherries and crushed strawberry fruit laced with minerals. It needs another two or three years to fully assimilate. The palate is beautifully balanced with fine tannin, very focused and tensile with shimmering, effervescent red fruit fanning out on the finish. Stunning—but it is unquestionably built for the long-term. Tasted September 2017.

Bright, full red. Ineffable aromas of raspberry, rose petal and minerals display wonderful perfumed lift for the year. Silky, concentrated and fine-grained on entry, then sharply delineated and perfumed in the middle palate, boasting superb floral lift and an impression of menthol reserve to its black raspberry, crushed stone and botanical herb flavors. A wonderfully savory, silky midweight with terrific energy and restrained sweetness for the year, not to mention noble, perfectly buffered tannins. The savory, slowly building finish is hard to scrape off your palate. This outstanding 2015 really stands out for its light touch.

The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, real structure and density, still quite oaky with a creamy texture though that will be subsumed with time. • Faiveley Chambertin-Clos-de-Beze Grand Cru Les Ouvrees Rodin 2011 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (95-97)

(from vines facing southeast, whereas the regular Clos de Beze is from south-facing vines; these vines are also a bit older: 55 years vs. 45): Good deep red. A coulis of red fruits sharpened by blood orange on the nose. Less reduced and more vibrant than the cuvee classique and utterly primary in the mouth, with pure fruit flavors framed and lifted by underlying minerality and perfectly integrated acidity. The explosive, highly perfumed finish features outstanding grip and punch and unflagging perfume. There will be just 4 barrels of this juice in 2011 (the cuvee was originally introduced in 2009), vs. 15 of the basic bottling. Hervet believes the two versions are of roughly equal quality, but today the Ouvrees Rodin is singing.

More luscious than the first Clos de Bèze but light on its feet, showing a wonderfully chiseled, penetrating quality and outstanding inner-mouth perfume. This struck me as more like a 2013, or a 2010. Not yet demonstrative in the middle but shows Musigny-like finesse. And the rising finish goes on and on. (made from same plot of 60+-year-old vines on the Chambertin side of this grand cru as in the past; 100% destemmed): Bright dark red. Raspberry and a touch of reduction on the nose. Then dense, sappy and high-pitched in the mouth, with terrific intensity and saline complexity to the intense red berry flavors. Notes of menthol and crushed stone contribute to an impression of youthful tightness. Harder to taste today than the classic Clos de Bèze, which is showing more energy and salty minerality in the early going. But this is subtler and longer on the aftertaste, with a distinctly floral, feminine character that reminded me of a great Chambolle-Musigny. Very different in style from Faiveley's basic Clos de Bèze, but is it better?

    Wine Advocate (97)

The 2016 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru Les Ouvrées Rodin is showing brilliantly from bottle, unfurling in the glass with a rich bouquet of cassis, cherries, red berries, grilled game, licorice, spices and smoky new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and expansive, with a deep and intense core of sapid fruit that cloaks its satiny but abundant structuring tannins, underpinned by succulent acids and concluding with a seriously long, penetrating finish. This special cuvée hails from a parcel of vines planted in 1966 on the Chambertin side of Clos de Bèze, and its name commemorates a Faiveley family connection with the sculptor Rodin.

  • Faiveley Chambertin-Clos De Beze Grand Cru 2013 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (94+)

  • Faiveley Chambertin-Clos De Beze Grand Cru 2014 (6x150cl)

    Wine Advocate (96)

Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, Faiveley's 2014 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru has a ravishing, pure and sensual bouquet with red cherries and crushed strawberry fruit laced with minerals. It needs another two or three years to fully assimilate. The palate is beautifully balanced with fine tannin, very focused and tensile with shimmering, effervescent red fruit fanning out on the finish. Stunning—but it is unquestionably built for the long-term. Tasted September 2017.

  • Faiveley Chambertin-Clos De Beze Grand Cru 2015 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (95)

  • Faiveley Chambertin-Clos De Beze Grand Cru 2016 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (94-97)

Bright, dark red-ruby. Knockout sappy nose combines black raspberry, crushed rock and white pepper. Boasts remarkable intensity and clarity--not to mention class--to its flavors of raspberry, spices and pungent minerals. Wonderfully sappy and dense but almost magically light on its feet. This sharply delineated wine finishes with ineffable rising perfume and outstanding length. This wine manages to combine the best traits of Faiveley's other Gevrey grand crus--not to mention the finest qualities of the 2016 vintage--in an utterly weightless package.

  • Faiveley Chambertin-Clos De Beze Grand Cru 2017 (6x150cl)

    Vinous (94-96)

The 2017 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru comes from two parcels. It has a charming bouquet of ebullient raspberry and wild strawberry aromas; hints of vanilla pod and rose petal lend complexity. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, gentle grip and a saline, oyster-shell-tinged finish that lingers in the mouth. This is one of Faiveley’s most impressive offerings in 2017. Superb.

  • Faiveley Chambertin-Clos De Beze Grand Cru 2018 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (94)

The 2018 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru is the most opulent of the four tasted from this vineyard, ravishing dark cherries, raspberry and cranberry scents, touches of tobacco and humidor. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, real structure and density, still quite oaky with a creamy texture though that will be subsumed with time. A serious Grand Cru that will demand several years in bottle, but mercurial and just losing some of its initial finesse with aeration. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

  • Faiveley Chambertin-Clos De Beze Grand Cru 2020 (3x75cl)

    Tim Atkin MW (97)

Woo wee! There are lots of spicy top notes, even barbecue spices, and aged meats on this nose. Sweet and crunchy red fruits press into the palate along with smoky oak, forest floor and pencil lead. The fine tannins sit primly on the palate while the reverberating acidity supports the medium body. This is immediately enticing but deserves time in bottle. 2025-45

  • Faiveley Chambertin-Clos De Beze Grand Cru 2021 (2x75cl)

    Vinous (92-94)

The 2021 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru bides its time opening up, revealing raspberry and cranberry fruit, autumn leaves, touches of orange pith. Cohesive and focused, it gains vigour in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, brown spices and white pepper that are liberally sprinkled over the finish that has a very small attenuation. But this is still well-crafted.

  • Faiveley Chambertin-Clos-de-Beze Grand Cru Les Ouvrees Rodin 2014 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (95-98)

Good full red, not darker than the regular Clos de Bèze. Suave and floral on the nose, showing pungent black pepper lift to its raspberry and mineral aromas. This incredible wine should evolve in bottle for decades.

  • Faiveley Chambertin-Clos-de-Beze Grand Cru Les Ouvrees Rodin 2015 (1x150cl)

    Vinous (94-97)

  • Faiveley Chambertin-Clos-de-Beze Grand Cru Les Ouvrees Rodin 2016 (1x150cl)
