France
The vast and diverse wine regions of France, each with its own unique terroirs, grape varieties, and winemaking techniques, are a treasure trove.
In Bordeaux, the birthplace of some of the world's most iconic wines, esteemed vineyards such as Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Haut-Brion produce exceptional red wines, showcasing the art of blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. The region is also renowned for its exquisite white wines, with vineyards like Château d'Yquem and Domaine de Chevalier producing legendary sweet wines.
Moving to Burgundy, the vineyards of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, and Domaine Armand Rousseau capture the essence of the region's revered terroir, crafting exquisite red wines from the Pinot Noir grape. Meanwhile, Domaine Leflaive and Domaine Coche-Dury are celebrated for their world-class white wines, predominantly made from Chardonnay.
The Champagne region, known for its sparkling wines, boasts illustrious houses such as Krug, Dom Pérignon, and Moët & Chandon, as well as grower-producers like Pierre Péters and Jacques Selosse. These vineyards create exceptional sparkling wines using the traditional method, offering a symphony of delicate bubbles, elegant flavors, and vibrant acidity.
In the Rhône Valley, iconic vineyards like Chapoutier, E. Guigal, and Château de Beaucastel produce remarkable red wines in the northern appellations of Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, and Cornas, showcasing the elegance and power of Syrah. Further south, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is celebrated for its rich and full-bodied red blends, with Château Rayas and Clos des Papes leading the way.
In Alsace, vineyards such as Domaine Zind-Humbrecht and omaine Trimbach craft exquisite white wines, including Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris, expressing the region's unique terroir and varietal character.
These are just a few highlights among the diverse array of wines that France offers. From the Loire Valley's crisp whites and elegant reds to the Languedoc-Roussillon's bold and robust wines, each region presents its own vinous treasures.

Grown in a single parcel that is 32 years old, this is a winsome Ech zeaux. It's an outpouring of pristine pure red fruits laced with minerality and sprinkled with sweet spices. Outgoing and welcoming, it reminded me of Anne's huge smile. (So often one can see the winemaker in her wine!) The gossamer structure definitely feels rather Vosne-like, even though this second smallest climat sits just about in the heart of Ech zeaux. 2023-36Inc. TAX€1,787.22 -

The 2021 Echézeaux Les Loachausses Grand Cru is understated and well-defined on the nose: brambly red fruit and crushed stone, touches of pressed flower. Again, this has a transparence that I admire. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, elegant and poised, gently building towards a cohesive, harmonious finish. Nicely poised and whilst not built for long-term ageing, it will dish out mid-term pleasure.Inc. TAX€2,630.92 -

Good medium red. More serious, tangy aromas of raspberry, minerals and smoke. Wonderful sweetness on the palate; really stuffed with fruit and yet less forthcoming today-perhaps more dominated by its structure- than the Clos Vougeot. Finishes long and firm, with a suggestion of medicinal cherry.Inc. TAX€4,273.43 -
Vinous (93)
Deep red. Sappy aromas of black cherry, clove and chocolate. Rich, full and deep; wonderfully sweet and silky, if not quite as primary as the Clos Vougeot. Spectacular middle-palate fruit and layered texture. Finishes with very refined, sweet tannins and great palate-staining persistence.Inc. TAX€1,258.50 -
Vinous (94+)
Medium red, a bit less saturated than the Clos Vougeot. Deeper aromas of black raspberry, blueberry, flinty smoky minerality and pepper, along with a whiff of gamey reduction. Bigger, broader and sweeter than the Clos Vougeot, and amazingly supple and plump for a grand cru from this vintage, without any loss of shape. The back end is like a booster rocket of fruits and flowers, which cover the wine's acidity and noble tannins today. I'd love to taste this next to the Clos Vougeot in ten years' time.Inc. The 2017 Richebourg Grand Cru reveals a lovely bouquet of Asian spices, plums, raspberries and rose petal, with only subtle hints of the savory nuances of soil and espresso to come with bottle age. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with satiny tannins and a broad, open-knit profile. This is a precocious, dramatic Richebourg in the making, and while it will never rival the depth and concentration Gros achieved in 2016 and 2015, it will certainly turn heads in its youth.Inc. The 2018 Richebourg Grand Cru has a gorgeous bouquet of ebullient blackberry, raspberry and cranberry fruit entwined with crushed stone and wild hedgerow aromas. The 2015 Echézeaux Grand Cru was buttoned down when I tasted it, the 100% new oak keeping a lid on the red berry fruit behind this wall. The palate is grippy on the entry with chunky red berry fruit (cranberry, wild strawberry and pomegranate) mixed with white pepper and sage notes towards the stocky finish. Like other 2015s from the domaine, I would like more terroir expression, more personality to be expressed.Inc. TAX€4,069.97 -

The 2017 Echézeaux Grand Cru comes from vines over 90 years old and is matured entirely in new oak. It has a very pure, seductive bouquet of black cherry and raspberry fruit infused with pressed iris and hints of India ink. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit and gentle grip, stiffening a little toward the finish, which just needs a little more flesh to come through. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Richebourg Grand Cru from A.F. Gros has a very fine bouquet, very expressive with vibrant, shimmering red berry fruit, cherry liqueur, boysenberries and marmalade. This is both complex and involving. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, beautifully poised and supple, elegant and utterly harmonious on the finish. The terroir and winemaking here exude Grand Cru quality. A bright fresh mid purple. The bouquet is superb, in a really lush and almost creamy red berry fruit, not as wild as some until a little savoury touch at the finish. Complex, a fine weave to the texture, with pure red berry fruit coming out at the finish.
