Wine Advocate (96)

The 2018 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese *** (White Capsule) is bright and intense on the very elegant and refined yet aromatic and super ripe but elegant nose. On the palate, this is a rich and powerful, very intense and concentrated Riesling with a tight structure and a massive yet still not finessed or stimulating finish. The wine has remarkable finesse and salinity, yet it is still somewhat massive and square to really simulate. Never mind, the wine has time. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.

Jellied and candied apple are garlanded in decadent lily. Hints of bruised apple skin supply aromatic and flavor contrast while remaining consistent with the themes of concentration and decay-by-botrytis. Nutty piquancy and an undertone of wet stone, unexpected in such a rich Auslese, add further intrigue on a soft, viscous palate, leading into a long, caramel-kissed finish that introduces a welcome hint of fresh apple juiciness, and whose sheer sweetness stops just short of becoming cloying.

The 2021 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese *** (Golden Capsule) is bright, pure and fresh on the still discreet but very delicate nose that shows perfectly ripe white fruit and deeper, finely weathered, flinty slate aromas. Lush and round on the palate, this is a highly finessed and stimulating saline and savory Auslese with crystalline, finely grained but nervy acidity and a long and intense yet weightless finish. The wine is finely structured but delivers mouth-filling delicate fruit and is almost irresistible at this early stage. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in May 2023.

The 2020 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese (White Capsule) is clear, pure, intense and refined, spicy and flinty on the nose that shows fully ripe, yellow-golden Riesling fruit combined with flinty/savory slate aromas. Lush and dense yet crystalline and refined on the palate, this is an elegant, very intense and saline, concentrated and substantial Sonnenuhr Spätlese that is, analytically and also sensorially, certainly an Auslese that reveals a concentrated, lemon-fresh, savory and stimulating bitter finish with great substance and class. This 2020 is remarkably complex and tensioned, but it has stimulating, zesty salinity and serious tannin structure. This impressive dry (or dry styled?) Spätlese will need another five to 10 years to open up and unfold its finesse and layers that it will easily keep for 50+ years, if cellared properly. 11.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine from AP 72 21 in July 2022.

From the oldest vines (120+ years), the 2015 Riesling Zeltlinger Sonnenuhr Auslese *** (White Capsule) opens with a very pure yet rich and intense bouquet of luxuriously ripe and intense fruits. Rich and opulent on the palate, still with a yeasty texture but great elegance and endless salinity, this is a powerful and intense Riesling with fine yet vital acidity, a very good mineral grip and a long finish. However, this wine needs at least 10 to 20 years to age and might deserve an even higher score then.

The 2020 Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Auslese ** (White Capsule) comes out pure and intense and with amazing finesse and complexity, reminiscent of ripe and warm stone fruit and chamomile aromas along with notes of almond cake and notes of weathered slate. On the palate, this is a spectacularly good two-starred Auslese with a concentrated but pristine texture but also refreshing phenolics on the saline finish. This is a sublime, nuanced and complex Riesling from one of the Mosel's most exciting vineyards where Molitor holds by far the majority. His 2020 Auslese ** is full of energy, tension and salinity, and dare I say, planet wine doesn't have that much to compete at this level of terroir expression and quality for a price of an incredible 40 euros ex-cellar. 12% stated alcohol. Decadent wisteria and lily perfume mingles with apple jelly, marzipan, white raisin and caramel on the nose. The impression on the soft, creamy, expansive, viscous palate is similarly decadent and confectionary, with a hint of bruised apple skin serving for lightly oxidative enhancement such as was witnessed in the corresponding Wehlener Sonnenuhr. This finishes with seductively soothing persistence. A sense of sweetness that threatened at midpalate to become cloying has the courtesy to back off slightly. Any sense of citricity present here is of candied peel, and anyone who places a premium on nobly sweet Riesling preserving freshness, clarity and animation will find those virtues impressively displayed in Molitor Auslesen other than this one, impressive though it is in its own way.

Quince and apple jellies on the nose – headily wreathed with iris, heliotrope and lily – acquire a stimulatingly tangy apple skin edge as well as bright limey juiciness on the palate, which at the same time offers a custardy sense of dense, creamy richness. As with this wine’s superb Wehlener counterpart, textural richness and enormous concentration have not precluded buoyancy and even an airy sense of openness. This beauty finishes with terrific, vibrant persistence and a sweet-saline savor that veritably milks the salivary glands.
