Vincent Girardin
Over ten generations of Girardins originated in Santenay until 1982 when Jean Girardin split up the vineyards between his four children. His son, Vincent, bought more vineyards and began a negociant business moving to Meursault. There is an emphasis on purity of fruit with minimal oak in both the reds and whites. Approachable when young, the Grand Cru have the potential for cellaring.

The 2017 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is slightly pale in hue and has a rather slight bouquet at first, offering fresh green apple and wet limestone aromas. I would just like more intensity, and indeed, that does develop with 10–15 minutes’ aeration. The palate is well balanced, quite saline and sappy, showing a strong marine influence, with oyster shell and crustaceans on the finish. Very fine and complex.Inc. TAX€688.75 -

More tightly wound than the Bienvenues, the 2019 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru unfurls in the glass with aromas of pear, confit citrus, fresh pastry, nutmeg, hazelnuts and beeswax, framed by a deft touch of youthful reduction. Full-bodied, deep and tensile, with huge levels of concentration and extract, it's layered and muscular, with a seamless, structured profile and a long, saline finish.Inc. TAX€621.73 -

A full mid yellow, much deeper than the Bienvenues. This has all the power, and with finesse too though evidently not as much as the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet. The Bâtard has just back from the rugby field. A good example though. 4 barrels made, of which one new. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: November 2023.Inc. TAX€4,678.54 -

(14.1% alcohol) Bright yellow. Subdued but pure aromas of citrus and stone fruits, hazelnut and nut oils. Chewy, large-scaled and sweet, with expressive flavors of peach, apricot and nut oils. 2.5 barrels made, mostly from the Chassagne side. Fair depth of yellow with real concentration but maybe stops a little shorter. (5 Star Wine) One barrel, not new. A pale primrose with a startlingly fine and pure bouquet. Magical. There is a refined yet exceptionally intense pure fruit, with a saline and citrus touch behind. The 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet Blanchot-Dessus 1er Cru was one of the big (pleasant) surprises of the tasting. It has a more composed and complex bouquet compared to others in this flight, with a little more crushed stone, blood oranges and light quince aromas developing in the glass. Impressive delineation and the oak is seamlessly integrated. The palate is well balanced with a crisp line of acidity, just a dab of sour lemon and orange rind, quite peppery in style with a bravura finish. Much better than others in this flight, this is well worth hunting down. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.Inc. TAX€1,037.28 -

Clear pale colour, a refined and chiselled nose. A little quality oak now emerges to flesh out the bouquet.
