    Taupenot-Merme

    About Domaine Taupenot-Merme

Domaine Taupenot-Merme is a dynamic, up-and-coming domaine based in Morey-Saint-Denis, with 13 hectares under vines in the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune. It is run by the seventh generation Romain Taupenot alongside his sister, Virginie. Seventh-generation Romain Taupenot runs this domaine with his sister, Virginie.

    Viniculture

The average age of the vines are over 50 years old and they follow lutte raisonnée or ‘the reasoned struggle’ principle in the vineyard, meaning chemicals are used only when they are absolutely needed, if ever.

The house style is generally focused on the great purity of fruit and intensity of aromatics in both their reds and whites. Generally known for producing wine from less-celebrated appellations, such as Auxey-Duresses and Saint-Romain, they champion these underrated wines with great style and class.

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)

Rich, exuberant purple. A cheerful nose, flamboyantly perfumed which is as Charmes should be. I very much like the balance of this, which is all in red fruit, succulent strawberry and raspberry, good acidity, no feeling of excess heat. 14.1% but holds it without difficulty. Tasted: December 2021

A fresh and distinctly cool nose is comprised by airy and laudably pure notes of red pinot fruit, green tea, earth and soft spice hints. There is a beguiling sense of underlying tension to the detailed and precise middleweight flavors that possess fine balance and excellent length on the saline-suffused finish where a touch of sweetness slowly emerges. This could use better depth, but the potential aging curve should allow more to develop

    Vinous (92-94)

The 2019 Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru is a "decent" quantity this year according to Romain Taupenot, though that only equates to a measly 170-litres. Despite the miniscule quantity, this is still de-stemmed. It has a crisp nose with brambly red berry fruit, pressed rose petals and a touch of Earl Grey. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins. It feels cohesive and poised, gentle towards the smooth finish with lightly spiced red fruit, bay leaf and a pinch of sea salt. Lovely...if you can find it.

The 2011 Corton Rognet Grand Cru has a more reticent nose with subtle marine scents emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent tannins on the entry. This is a tertiary Corton with attractive damp earthy and moss accents that inform the composed understated finish. Drink now-2020.

Healthy dark red. Pungent aromas of dried flowers and iodine are complicated by a resiny note. Dense, sweet and deep, conveying an impression of power to its savory flavors of dried flowers and potpourri. Finishes with noteworthy aromatic persistence. This wine will rely as much on its acidity as on its tannins for longevity.

Bright dark red. Reticent red berry and spice aromas are complemented by an earthy element. At once sweet and penetrating, with firm acidity and savory minerality giving grip to the fine-grained flavors of red fruits, spices and peony. Finishes classically dry and vibrant, with a rising finish that stimulates the taste buds. This one may need a decade to reach peak drinkability.

The 2015 Corton-Rognet Grand Cru has a fragrant bouquet with blackberry, raspberry preserve, crushed rose petals and just a hint of blood orange, quite sophisticated in style for a Corton-Rognet. The palate is medium-bodied with juicy tannin on the entry. This does not shortchange you on fruit: blackberry, raspberry and a pinch of white pepper, leading to a structured and quite grippy finish that like Taupernot-Merme's other 2015s, manages to retain impressive freshness and elegance. It has an incredibly long aftertaste, over a minute in the mouth and you can still feel this. Highly recommended.

The 2011 Gevrey-Chambertin Bel-Air 1er Cru demonstrates more cohesion and harmony on the nose compared directly with the 2011 Les Pruliers, vibrant cranberry and raspberry preserve scents, a little smoke and graphite. Healthy dark red. A bit less black and more floral than the La Riotte, offering aromas of strawberry, raspberry and minerals plus a whiff of game. Silky on entry, then concentrated, supple and juicy, showing lovely violet and chalky mineral lift to the black cherry fruit. The crop level was down 60% due to the frost but there's nothing clenched about this wine today. Finishes with ripe, fine-grained tannins and excellent spicy length. This vineyard just below the forest has benefited from global warming, noted Taupenot.

The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, finely tuned with such pretty red cherry and wild strawberry notes on the tart finish. Taupenot referred to this as his "baby Bèze" - a perfectly apt description.

Like the domaine's La Combe d'Orveau, this Premier Cru sits high on a slope above Grand Crus. The vines averaged 44 years old for the 2020 vintage, with the larger part planted in 1974 and the smaller bit planted in 1986. The focused, pure nose smells of blackberry coulis and fresh flowers. The palate bustles with freshness and energy as the finely-hewn tannins frame the medium body. 2024-35

The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Bel Air 1er Cru has a light nose with clearly some whole cluster at play, "cool" red fruit aromatics and traces of wilted rose petal. The palate is medium-bodied with light but pliant tannins. There is a gentle, very discreet build in the mouth, providing satisfying substance on the finish, married with a keen line of acidity and spiciness. It is a deftly crafted Gevrey that should give at least a decade of drinking pleasure. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

A completely different aromatic profile is present here with much more sauvage character to the earthy red and dark currant scents. The sleek, cool and beautifully well-detailed middle weight flavors possess both a bit more volume and noticeably more punch on the delicious yet entirely serious finish that is at once well-balanced and persistent. This lovely Gevrey villages is worth checking out.

This vineyard just below the forest has benefited from global warming, noted Taupenot.

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Bel Air 1er Cru is overly floral on the nose with raspberry, cranberry and light loamy aromas, more oyster shell scents emerging with time. The palate is well balanced with fine balance, very terroir-driven with great tension and vibrant red cherry and strawberry fruit bursting forth on the finish. Superb.

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Bel Air 1er Cru is attractive and fresh on the nose, melted tar and pencil box scents percolating through the red and black fruit, a hint of orange rind with time.

    Vinous - Neal Martin (92)
