Domaine Taupenot-Merme

About Domaine Taupenot-Merme

Domaine Taupenot-Merme is a dynamic, up-and-coming domaine based in Morey-Saint-Denis, with 13 hectares under vines in the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune. It is run by the seventh generation Romain Taupenot alongside his sister, Virginie. Seventh-generation Romain Taupenot runs this domaine with his sister, Virginie.

Viniculture

The average age of the vines are over 50 years old and they follow lutte raisonnée or ‘the reasoned struggle’ principle in the vineyard, meaning chemicals are used only when they are absolutely needed, if ever.

The house style is generally focused on the great purity of fruit and intensity of aromatics in both their reds and whites. Generally known for producing wine from less-celebrated appellations, such as Auxey-Duresses and Saint-Romain, they champion these underrated wines with great style and class.

Taupenot Merme Chambolle-Musigny 2018 (6x75cl)

Burghound (89-91)

A cool and very pretty nose offers up notes of red and dark cherry with hints of pomegranate, violet and discreet spice wisps. There is the classic undercurrent of minerality on the caressing and relatively dense medium-bodied flavors that exude a refreshing salinity on the serious, firm and mildly raspy finish. This too will need a few years to round off the tannins.

Taupenot Merme Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2015 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (93-95)

The 2015 Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru has an expressive bouquet with redcurrant, raspberry coulis, a touch of honey and a hint of Seville orange marmalade. It opens nicely in the glass, though does not slip into fifth gear at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, cohesive in the mouth and quite saline and spicy. There is generosity here, a trait of Charmes-Chambertin, with the mineral core surfacing right at the finish as it fans out. This is an impressive follow-up to the superb 2014 and it should give 20+ years of pleasure.

Taupenot Merme Gevrey-Chambertin 2019 (6x75cl)

Burghound (89-91)

(from Craite Paille, Les Seuvrées, Belair and La Justice). A notably ripe yet still agreeably fresh combination reveals its aromas of dark currant, warm earth, the sauvage and a discreet hint of wood. There is once again very good energy to the nicely detailed and lightly stony medium-bodied flavors that possess a surprising inner mouth perfume, all wrapped in a lingering and solidly powerful finale. This is a quality Gevrey villages and worth checking out. (89-91)/2026+

Taupenot Merme Mazoyeres-Chambertin Grand Cru 2019 (6x75cl)

Vinous (95-97)

The 2019 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru has a little more intensity than the Charmes-Chambertin, damp undergrowth, moss, light leafy aromas tincturing the mainly red fruit and developing more and more earthiness with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity. Taut and fresh with perhaps the most saline finish of all Romain Taupenot’s cuvées this year, it is destined to be a wonderful Mazoyères-Chambertin for sure. Best in show chez Taupenot-Merme.

Taupenot Merme Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers 2015 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (92-94)

The 2015 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru les Pruliers has a perfumed bouquet with very good vigor, ample red and black fruit that seem very expressive, subtle hints of undergrowth and cold wet limestone percolating through with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, very harmonious with good salinity, especially on the sappy finish that is beautifully defined. The body and presence here is superb, maintaining that nascent restraint that will be relieved once in bottle and given requisite bottle age.

Taupenot Merme Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers 2018 (6x75cl)

Burghound (92)

There is a background whiff of volatile acidity that adds a bit of lift to the notably ripe aromas of black cherry, cassis, earth and the sauvage. The rich, full-bodied, concentrated and muscular flavors evidence focused power on the balanced, long, rustic and markedly firm finish. This is a wine to buy and forget that you own it as it has excellent development potential.
