    Louis Jadot

    About Maison Louis Jadot

A legendary name in Burgundy with which every collector will be intimately familiar, Maison Louis Jadot was founded in 1859 by the eponymous Louis Henry Denis Jadot, although the family had roots as grape growers in the region dating back far further than this.

Purchased by the Kopf family after the death of the last male members of the Jadot family, the Maison currently owns over 60 hectares of vines itself whilst purchasing fruit from select growers to supplement their holdings. In Jacques Lardière, this mighty winery has one of the most experienced and highly respected winemakers in the entire region, having held the position through the transition of ownership since 1970!

A true pioneer of low intervention viticulture and winemaking, Lardière believes the terroir of his sites is the single most beautiful tool at his disposal. It is the soil and sunlight of Burgundy which transposes the wines of Maison Louis Jadot, conveying a sense of time and place in the greatest of Burgundian fashions.

      Vinous (95-97)

The 2018 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is armed with precocious black cherries, cassis, crushed violets and a touch of iodine on the nose, aromatics that have no intention of holding back. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, wonderful precision and sense of energy. Almost playful toward the very pure, sensual, vivid finish. This is a superb "BM" from Louis Jadot and it should offer 30-plus years of pleasure.

The 2019 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has a floral bouquet of black and blueberry fruit infused with crushed violet and iris petal. This is completely destemmed, so it does not convey the same amplitude. The palate is medium-bodied, with light Earl Grey and ash notes tincturing the black fruit. Fine structure and focus here. Light on its feet toward the long, sustained finish. This is a superb Bonnes-Mares.

The 2020 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is very pure and harmonious on the nose with plush black cherry and cassis fruit, well-integrated oak and a floral aspect that becomes more prominent with time. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh, lightly spiced with quite a vivacious, mineral-driven finish that retains superb definition. • Louis Jadot Chambertin-Clos-De-Beze Grand Cru 2009 (6x75cl)

      Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (96+)

Bright medium red. Knockout soil-driven nose combines red cherry, cocoa powder, brown spices, dried flowers, lavender and minerals. The palate offers compelling high-pitched flavors of red fruits and flowers complemented by strong saline soil tones. Conveys a powerful impression of extract without any fat. This youthfully imploded wine magically combines power and finesse, finishing with outstanding sappiness and thrust. It was hard to scrape this off my palate--not that I tried.

Good medium red. Extravagantly complex nose combines raspberry, wild rose, crushed rock, clove, mocha and wild herbs. Wonderfully subtle, spherical and nuanced, communicating an almost 3-D texture to the flavors of red berries, spices, licorice, herbs and flowers. The wine's firm spine of tannins is utterly covered by lush, fleshy fruit today. The thick, slowly rising finish washes over the palate like a wave.

The 2012 Chambertin Clos-de-Beze Grand Cru, which like the Chapelle-Chambertin is domaine-owned, has a more voluminous, multi-faceted bouquet with engaging incense and mineral notes infusing the beautifully defined black fruits. The palate is very well balanced on the entry with more tension and nervosite than the Chambertin, building effortlessly towards a quite regal, sophisticated finish whose mineralite lingers long in the mouth. Outstanding.

      Wine Advocate (96)

Jadot's 2015 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru is stunningly good in the 2015 vintage, bursting from the glass with a primary bouquet of candied red cherry, plum, rose petal, coniferous forest floor and a hint of the black truffle to come, judiciously framed by new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and deep, with wonderful concentration and depth, its generous core of ripe fruit underpinned by bright, racy acids. This still need time to come together—15 years, ideally—but its potential is immense.

Tasted from bottle, the 2016 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru (Domaine Louis Jadot) is showing marvelously, unfurling in the glass with a deep bouquet of juicy cherries, cassis, blood orange, violets and rich spices, its framing of new oak already almost entirely integrated. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, multidimensional and utterly complete, with a bottomless core of cool, sappy fruit that entirely conceals its supple but abundant tannins. Immensely concentrated and strikingly structurally refined, this is a brilliant Clos de Bèze that's more classically balanced than the more overtly ripe 2015.

A fine crimson colour. The bouquet is immediately appealing showing a distinction not yet apparent in the Chapelle-Chambertin, though that will come. This is the more structured of the two, possibly even a little bit stern, but with a wealth of high-class fruit behind where the refinement begins to show. Drink from 2032-2040+. The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru has a charming bouquet of red berry fruit infused with orange pith and hints of nougat. There is real intensity to this Les Amoureuses, equal to that of the Bonnes-Mares. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin, beautifully integrated oak, lovely depth and a hint of dark chocolate on the lactic finish. It will take time for everything to meld together, but this feels very assured even at such a premature stage.

The 2010 Chambolle-Musigny Les Feusselottes sweeps across the palate with rich, textured dark cherries, flowers, mint and graphite. The fleshy fruit is nicely supported by veins of minerality in this expansive, generous wine. Here, too, the style is quite serious and powerful. The darker side of Chambolle comes through in spades, but there is also plenty of sensuality and grace. In short, this is a marvelous wine endowed with terrific overall balance.

Silky-sweet on entry, then surprisingly open-knit in the middle, with sweet berry and mineral flavors carrying nicely through a broad, fine-grained finish. Has the stuffing to support its smooth tannins. (My sample of the Chambolle-Musigny Baudes was locked up tight and in a dry phase; it will require revisiting next year in bottle.)

One of the finest wines in the Jadot portfolio, the 2017 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru (Domaine Louis Jadot) unfurls in the glass with aromas of sweet red berries, menthol, dark chocolate, blood orange and grilled meats. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and layered, with superb depth and dimension, succulent acids and notable concentration, its tannins entirely cloaked in fruit. While this is a comparatively supple, giving rendition of this cuvée, it will nevertheless demand patience.

      Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-98)

Lovely dense mid purple, the nose has massive energy but not yet much detail. Then such an explosion of riotous fruit, joyously ripe pinot but still pure pinot. A little touch of menthol behind the ripe cherry notes with raspberry chaser. Amazing length. Very fine indeed. Tasted: November 2021

    • Louis Jadot Chambertin-Clos-De-Beze Grand Cru 2021 (3x75cl)

      Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-97)

Pretty pink purple with a lively but fine nose. The fruit starts discreetly but then here it comes, delivering a level of class not seen in any of the previous Jadot wines, good though they are. The Clos de Bèze is beautifully balanced, and light on its feet. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted: October 2022

      Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-98)

A fine crimson colour. The bouquet is immediately appealing showing a distinction not yet apparent in the Chapelle-Chambertin, though that will come. This is the more structured of the two, possibly even a little bit stern, but with a wealth of high-class fruit behind where the refinement begins to show. Drink from 2032-2040+. Tasted: October 2023.

    • Louis Jadot Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses 2017 (6x75cl)

      Vinous (93-95)

The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru has a charming bouquet of red berry fruit infused with orange pith and hints of nougat. There is real intensity to this Les Amoureuses, equal to that of the Bonnes-Mares. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin, beautifully integrated oak, lovely depth and a hint of dark chocolate on the lactic finish. It will take time for everything to meld together, but this feels very assured even at such a premature stage.

    • Louis Jadot Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses 2018 (1x75cl)

      Vinous (91-93)

The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru has a gorgeous bouquet of violet-infused black cherry and wild strawberry fruit, extremely elegant and refined and gaining intensity with every swirl of the glass. The medium-bodied palate features mint-chocolate-tinged black fruit. The oak is quite conspicuous at the moment and occludes the terroir profile toward the finish. Give it a few years to meld together so the palate matches the breeding of the aromatics.

    • Louis Jadot Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Feusselottes 2010 (6x75cl)

      Vinous (90-92)

The 2010 Chambolle-Musigny Les Feusselottes sweeps across the palate with rich, textured dark cherries, flowers, mint and graphite. The fleshy fruit is nicely supported by veins of minerality in this expansive, generous wine. Here, too, the style is quite serious and powerful. The darker side of Chambolle comes through in spades, but there is also plenty of sensuality and grace. In short, this is a marvelous wine endowed with terrific overall balance.

      Vinous (92-94)

The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Fuesselottes 1er Cru has a complex and generous bouquet: dense red berry fruit, smoke, cigar box and touches of dried blood. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh with blood orange and even a tang of marmalade on the spicy finish. There’s a lot going on in this Chambolle. Superb.

      Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (90-92)

Medium red, less bright than the Feusselottes. Reticent nose hints at crushed stone.

      Jancis Robinson (17)

Star anise, red plum and red cherry on this complex and bright nose. Silky smooth but plentiful tannins frame an expansive core of floral red fruits on the palate. Quite marked smoky, chocolatey oak at this stage but such is the power of fruit that it should knit together well with time.

A crisp bright purple colour. This has a gorgeous purity and precision, a ravishing lifted red fruit intensity, good acidity and well ripened tannins. Very elegant yet intense Chambolle, with a beautiful finish. Tasted: November 2021

    • Louis Jadot Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuees 2021 (6x75cl)

      Vinous (90-92)

The 2021 Chambolle-Musigny Les Fuées 1er Cru shows more reduction than the Les Baudes, and consequently, I find this warm and more difficult to read. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, more sorbet-like than the Les Baudes and slightly candied towards the finish but without quite the same pedigree. However, it should still drink well for a number of years.

    • Louis Jadot Chapelle Chambertin Grand Cru 2015 (6x75cl)

      Wine Advocate (93-95)

The 2015 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru has an open red cherry, crushed strawberry and sea spray-scented bouquet that perhaps does not quite have the complexity, nor the intrigue of the Mazis-Chambertin at this stage. The palate is refined with grippy tannin and a commendable sense of energy and tension. The salinity comes through on the finish and lends this grand cru fine sappiness, urging you back for another sip. For those with patience...

    • Louis Jadot Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru 2010 (6x75cl)

      Vinous (95)

Good full, medium red. Expressive, nuanced aromas of strawberry, raspberry, crushed stone, smoke and flowers. Glyceral yet light on its feet, with a suave, silky texture to its vibrant, savory red fruit, floral and mineral flavors. Not at all a superripe style: really perks up the palate and leaves the mouth refreshed on the very long, sweet/savory finish. This classy grand cru finishes with captivating perfumed lift.

    • Louis Jadot Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru 2011 (6x75cl)

      Vinous (95)

Bright, full medium red. Knockout nose shows an almost candied character to the aromas of strawberry, cherry, dark berries, lavender, menthol and Indian spices. Dense, suave and juicy, with a distinctly silky texture to the broad flavors of red fruits, menthol and spices. Utterly seamless, suave, classically dry Chapelle with outstanding energy and definition. Still tight today but the wine's fine-grained tannins and superb breadth and length suggest that it will make a great bottle a decade hence.
