Louis Jadot
About Maison Louis Jadot
A legendary name in Burgundy with which every collector will be intimately familiar, Maison Louis Jadot was founded in 1859 by the eponymous Louis Henry Denis Jadot, although the family had roots as grape growers in the region dating back far further than this.
Purchased by the Kopf family after the death of the last male members of the Jadot family, the Maison currently owns over 60 hectares of vines itself whilst purchasing fruit from select growers to supplement their holdings. In Jacques Lardière, this mighty winery has one of the most experienced and highly respected winemakers in the entire region, having held the position through the transition of ownership since 1970!
A true pioneer of low intervention viticulture and winemaking, Lardière believes the terroir of his sites is the single most beautiful tool at his disposal. It is the soil and sunlight of Burgundy which transposes the wines of Maison Louis Jadot, conveying a sense of time and place in the greatest of Burgundian fashions.

Vinous (91+)
Medium red. Brooding aromas of dark fruits, mint and menthol. Rich and deep on the palate, with spicy red fruit flavors lifted by a note of orange peel. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins and juicy persistence.Inc. TAX€977.58 -
Vinous (90+)
Medium red. Subdued but pure aromas of blueberry, dark cherry and spicy oak. Juicy, tight and intense, with red berry and chocolate flavors accented by pepper and herbs. Offers attractive flesh and sweetness, finishing with a slightly herbal aspect along with oak and menthol notes. This should evolve slowly.Inc. TAX€754.15 -
Vinous (91+)
Good medium red. More complex and vibrant on the nose than the village wines I tasted from the Côte de Nuits, offering musky scents of black raspberry, licorice, menthol and violet. Then surprisingly fine-grained and sweet in the middle palate if still a bit youthfully compressed, communicating an impression of medicinal reserve to its rich dark fruit, spice and violet flavors. Way longer than the village wines, with more refined tannins and subtle floral lift. This lively midweight is showing the dark fruit side of the vintage. I may be underrating it today.Inc. TAX€967.67 -
Vinous (90-92)
The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Boudots 1er Cru has a conspicuous fish scale scent on the nose that complements the black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, sappy red fruit, lightly spiced with a sinewy finish that just about manages to retain an essence of finesse. This could evolve nicely in bottle.Inc. TAX€772.38 -
Vinous (89-91)
The 2021 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Boudots 1er Cru is clearly a step up on the nose compared to the Village Cru, with much more complexity and terroir expression. It displays a mélange of red and black fruit, sous-bois and hints of clove. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and dark cherry fruit, mulberry and a dash of white pepper. It maybe just misses the complexity of the 2020 on the finish. It should give at least a decade of pleasure.Inc. TAX€926.66 -
Vinous (92-94)
The 2020 Beaune Cras 1er Cru includes 30% whole bunch as a trial for Jadot whose policy has always been to de-stem. To be honest, if I had this blind, I would not have said there is stems in this blend, which I see as a good thing. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh and I do think those stems lend more freshness on the finish. Excellent.Inc. TAX€358.38 -
Vinous (92)
Jadot’s 2012 Beaune 1er Cru Celebration is aromatically quite expressive, with lovely bright, floral notes that play off a core of red berry and stone fruits. The gracious, almost feminine, bouquet is alluring and suggests a wine that is quite open, but the palate sensation is completely different. Tiny yields and high skin to juice ratios yielded red Burgundies with huge tannic clout that obscures the fruit, which is exactly how the wine comes across in tasting. It will be interesting to see if the 2012 softens over time, or if it gains volume with aging. Today, it is decidedly on the austere side of things.Inc. TAX€626.93 -

Opening in the glass with aromas of sweet berries, cherries and plums framed by a deft application of toasty new oak, the 2018 Beaune 1er Cru Célébration (Maison Louis Jadot) is medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with a fleshy core of fruit structured around rich tannins and succulent acids. It's a hearty, generous wine that should evolve nicely in the cellar. As usual, it's a blend of more than a dozen Beaune premiers crus.Inc. TAX€303.18 -

There are some 3,500 cases of the 2020 Beaune 1er Cru Célébration (Maison Louis Jadot), a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and seamless wine evocative of smoky berries, spices and licorice, framed by creamy new oak. More polished and elegant than the muscular 2018, the last rendition of this bottling (which blends more than a dozen of Beaune's premiers crus), it will offer a broad drinking window.Inc. TAX€307.67 -

The 2013 Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Couchereaux has a fragrant and the most floral bouquet compared to Jadot's fellow 2013 Beaune crus, with touches of orange sorbet and fresh raspberries developing nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly stringy tannins at the moment, the acidity nicely judged and showing fine focus on the elegant finish. Excellent.Inc. TAX€1,075.98 -

The 2010 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is much bolder and more extravagant on the nose than the Amoureuses with potent mulberry, raspberry and a hint of tomato vine. The tannins are very supple on the palate, the acidity well-judged with raspberry, red currant and cranberry notes. It builds in the mouth, the tannins taking over to manifest a more serious Bonnes-Mares than the nose implies. This is worth cellaring for at least a decade. Drink 2022-2030.Inc. TAX€3,610.38 -
Vinous (93-95)
Medium red. Deep, brooding aromas of dark berries, brown spices and earth. Extremely introverted on the palate, with strong saline soil tones currently overshadowing the wine's fruit. This finished its malolactic fermentation in July (most of these 2013s finished between March and June of last year) and is clearly behind most of the Gevrey wines here in its development. But this saline, classically dry, very long Bonnes-Mares should prove to be an outstanding wine of terroir 10 or 12 years down the road.Inc. TAX€1,594.38 -
Decanter (95)
The Bonnes-Mares is an excellent, cellar worthy wine this year, opening in the glass with a bouquet of cherries, wild berries, currant leaf, coffee and gamebird. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and concentrated, with excellent depth, rich but chalky tannins, and good energy through the long, penetrating finish. This is firmly structured but has the dimension and amplitude to carry it.Inc. TAX€1,085.20 -

The 2018 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is armed with precocious black cherries, cassis, crushed violets and a touch of iodine on the nose, aromatics that have no intention of holding back. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, wonderful precision and sense of energy. Almost playful toward the very pure, sensual, vivid finish. This is a superb "BM" from Louis Jadot and it should offer 30-plus years of pleasure.Inc. TAX€1,229.20 -

The 2019 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has a floral bouquet of black and blueberry fruit infused with crushed violet and iris petal. This is completely destemmed, so it does not convey the same amplitude. Bright medium red. Knockout soil-driven nose combines red cherry, cocoa powder, brown spices, dried flowers, lavender and minerals. The palate offers compelling high-pitched flavors of red fruits and flowers complemented by strong saline soil tones. Conveys a powerful impression of extract without any fat. This youthfully imploded wine magically combines power and finesse, finishing with outstanding sappiness and thrust. It was hard to scrape this off my palate--not that I tried.Inc. TAX€3,436.38 -
Vinous (94-97)
Good medium red. Extravagantly complex nose combines raspberry, wild rose, crushed rock, clove, mocha and wild herbs. Wonderfully subtle, spherical and nuanced, communicating an almost 3-D texture to the flavors of red berries, spices, licorice, herbs and flowers. The wine's firm spine of tannins is utterly covered by lush, fleshy fruit today. The thick, slowly rising finish washes over the palate like a wave.Inc. TAX€1,768.38 -

The 2012 Chambertin Clos-de-Beze Grand Cru, which like the Chapelle-Chambertin is domaine-owned, has a more voluminous, multi-faceted bouquet with engaging incense and mineral notes infusing the beautifully defined black fruits. The palate is very well balanced on the entry with more tension and nervosite than the Chambertin, building effortlessly towards a quite regal, sophisticated finish whose mineralite lingers long in the mouth. Jadot's 2015 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru is stunningly good in the 2015 vintage, bursting from the glass with a primary bouquet of candied red cherry, plum, rose petal, coniferous forest floor and a hint of the black truffle to come, judiciously framed by new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and deep, with wonderful concentration and depth, its generous core of ripe fruit underpinned by bright, racy acids. This still need time to come together—15 years, ideally—but its potential is immense.Inc. TAX€1,487.20 -

Tasted from bottle, the 2016 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru (Domaine Louis Jadot) is showing marvelously, unfurling in the glass with a deep bouquet of juicy cherries, cassis, blood orange, violets and rich spices, its framing of new oak already almost entirely integrated. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, multidimensional and utterly complete, with a bottomless core of cool, sappy fruit that entirely conceals its supple but abundant tannins. Immensely concentrated and strikingly structurally refined, this is a brilliant Clos de Bèze that's more classically balanced than the more overtly ripe 2015.Inc. TAX€935.20 -
