    Le Pin

    About Le Pin

Le Pin is a tiny 2.7-hectare property in the Pomerol district of Bordeaux. A winery came into existence only in 1979, it was established by the Thienpont family (owners of nearby Vieux Château Certan) and quickly rocketed to superstardom to vie for the title of the most expensive wine in the world. Le Pin is named after two pine trees at the vineyard. There is no true château on the property, though a new winery was opened in 2011, replacing an old farmhouse basement.

Château Le Pin is one of the legends of Pomerol, rivalled only by Château Pétrus. Only around 7,000 bottles of Le Pin are produced even in the best years. Combined with the sheer pedigree of Le Pin, prices have reached eye-watering levels but even that has barely put any dent in the demand for the wines of what Parker calls “one of Bordeaux’s original garage operations”.

    Viniculture

As one of the rarest and most expensive wines in the world, the estate only produces 600-700 cases per year. Known for producing wines of extreme concentration, Le Pin wine is made from 100% Merlot and they are sourced from the vineyard located a stone throw away from Pétrus.

This wine unquestionably possesses an excessive amount of toasty new oak for its fragile, delicate constitution. The wine displays medium to dark ruby color, an aggressively woody, slightly smoky, and herb-scented nose, and medium-bodied, black-cherry-like flavors that are insufficient to stand up to the veneer of wood. Low in acidity, slightly diluted, and full of cosmetic smoke, vanillin, and wood, it should be consumed over the next 5-6 years. Given the frightfully high price asked for the 500+ cases of Le Pin (usually an exotic as well as brilliant wine), this is a vintage when the proprietor should have declassified the wine.

Tasted at the Pomerol Comparative Exploration tasting in London, the 1995 Le Pin is a vintage that has never proven its pedigree. Now with two decades under its belt, the aromatics are strangely not that far from those of the 1995 Lafleur despite the absence of any Cabernet Franc. There is a pleasant mineralité here and impressive purity. The palate is fresh and vibrant, a mixture or red and black fruit with a subtle marine influence. Classy and sophisticated, this is unquestionably the finest bottle that I have encountered. Perhaps it was just a late bloomer? Anyway, I am happy to upgrade my score from previous encounters.

Lot #1: Good medium red. Floral aromas of cassis and raspberry. Creamy-sweet, with an almost eau de vie-like sappy quality. Very long and spicy, with sound underlying structure for this wine. From young vines (just a portion of this juice will go into the final blend): Minerally and smoky on the nose. Less dense and creamy in the mouth, but quite harmonious. Lot #3, from the estate oldest vines (comprising 35% of the total): More saturated red-ruby. Sappy raspberry and chocolate nose shows a hint of surmaturite More sauvage black fruit aromas complicated by a note of cinnamon. By far the strongest component, and the most typical Le Pin. The 2001 Le Pin is hands down one of the finest wines that Jacques Thienpont has made. It’s cut from a completely different cloth than the 2000, delivering almost clinically defined black cherries, boysenberry, crushed stone and violet scents with laser-like precision. The medium-bodied palate is taut and fresh, with fine tannins, beguiling pure fruit and stunning focus on the finish. Jacques Thienpont seemed as excited as I was by the showing of this wine at 20 years. It is a stellar Pomerol and simply one of the best vintages of Le Pin ever made.

I tasted one lot from 'young' (25-year-old!) vines that was a healthy crimson but was pretty tough and taut. The second lot, from 35-year-old vines, was a deeper crimson, equally sappy and lively and had more fruit to compensate for the acidity and marked tannins towards the finish. Dry finish and not charming, but then the property produced only 15 hl/ha, about half the average and a mere 12 barrels, so there should be no problem selling it. Perhaps the most charming sample, surprisingly, was the vin de presse which had great vivacity as well as, of course, masses of both acidity and tannin.

There are 580 cases of the exotic, flamboyant 2004 Le Pin. Its dense plum/ruby color is accompanied by sweet aromas of kirsch, cassis, smoke, earth, and roasted herbs. Super-opulent for the vintage, it possesses wonderful fruit and glycerin, medium to full body, and a fleshy personality. It should drink well young, yet age nicely for two decades or more. The 2005 Le Pin lived up to the hype and ultimately was wine of the afternoon for me. It had a great nose, t 'n a city yet still refined but also with so much stuffing. There was noticeable citrus with decadent fruit - cranberry, blueberry, blackberry, cassis, boysenberry - everyone was invited! There was great spine and length, but the 2005 was still so elegant. Jef called it 'a lip smacker' and noted 'kirsch and strawberry.' The 2005 was all that and then some.

The 2015 Le Pin has a medium to deep garnet color and it needs a little swirling before it bursts into a spray of scents of beautiful black raspberries, warm plums, and Indian spices, followed by hints of rose oil, Ceylon tea, cast iron pan, and cardamom. Full-bodied, the palate is so very plush and decadent, delivering layer upon layer of black fruits and exotic spices with seamless acidity to enliven, finishing with persistent mineral and earth notes. It’s a bit more closed and tighter than many 2015s, developing oh-so-slowly, but will be well worth the wait.

    Decanter (98)

Layer upon layer of complexity, texture and tannin continue to delight and surprise the palate. There’s silk and satin, subtle roasted coffee beans, sweet berry fruits, bracken, toffee and soft leather. Full of finesse and perfume; you would be thrilled to open a bottle now. But it’s also only just beginning to reveal its heart.

    James Suckling (100)

Dreamlike deep nose with blackberries, graphite and some smoky notes. Opens with licorice, vanilla and red fruit. Full and intensely fruity on the palate with lots of dark berries. Complex, dense and deeply structured with polished tannins and a great finish that just goes on and on. The balance is amazing. Even better than 2009. Drink from 2018.

    Wine Advocate (95)

Caramelized fruit, coffee bean, espresso, black cherry liqueur, licorice and spice aromas jump from the glass of this dark ruby/plum-colored wine. Concentrated and silky-textured, this full-bodied, voluptuous wine is a brilliant example of the 2011 vintage. Give it 2-4 more years in the bottle and enjoy it over the next 15 or more.

    James Suckling (97)

This is the essence of Le Pin with incredible silk texture and beautiful fruit. A berry, sweet-tobacco, chocolate and dusty undertone. It reminds me of many wonderful and underrated Le Pins of the 1980s like 1985 or 1986. What a wine. Better in 2018. But who can wait? Cystal clear. It’s like the 2001 that was always better than 2000.

    The Wine Independent (100)

A river of ganache-coated raspberry pâte de fruit flavors courses through this version, flecked liberally with anise notes and underscored by warm earth accents. Shows terrific concentration for the vintage, brimming with energy as the fruit cascades through a sweet, tobacco-accented finish that is ridiculously long. This transcends the general vintage profile, delivering extra depth and drive to the fruit. A tannic spine matches the fresh acidity.
