    Maison Joseph Drouhin

    Abour Maison Joseph Drouhin

The eponymous Joseph Drouhin founded the négociant company, which bears his name in 1880, having spent much of his early life in Yonne. His son Maurice took over in 1918, buying the first vineyards, including the famous Clos des Mouches, which we are delighted to offer below. An arduous process of expansion thanks to the nature of Burgundy’s patchwork of owners, Maurice was finally able to carve out quite the empire for his family, which endures to this day.

A titanic character in Beaune, Maurice both sat on the INAO committee and acted as deputy administrator of the Hospices de Beaune throughout the turbulent World War II. At the height of his powers, Drouhin even had exclusive distribution rights to Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. However, he was unable to purchase a portion of the company, which subsequently went to Leroy.

His successor was his nephew Robert Jeausset-Drouhin, who took charge in 1957. Still maintaining a watchful eye over proceedings, Robert has ceded main control to his children (and fourth generation) Frédéric, Laurent, Philippe and Véronique. Philippe Drouhin manages the vineyards biodynamically, and as of 2009, their entire range has the ECOCERT organic certification.

Joseph Drouhin (Drouhin Vaudon) Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 2016 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (92)

The 2016 Chablis Les Clos Grand Cru has a relatively opulent bouquet, quite powerful with yellow plum and honeysuckle aromas, just a hint of fish oil in the background (actually a tincture that I love). The palate is well balanced with a precise, stem ginger-tinged entry, very good depth in the mouth with a persistent, light spiced finish not unlike Les Preuses in style. Excellent.

The 2016 Chablis Vaudésir Grand Cru has a lovely bouquet with fresh citrus fruit, orange zest, yellow flowers and a touch of flint. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, very harmonious with an effervescent, precise and quite energetic, vivacious finish, a hint of Shezchuan pepper tingling on the aftertaste. Excellent.

    Vinous (93-95)

The 2012 Beaune Clos des Mouches is rich, deep and explosive in the glass. Smoke, dark cherries, incense, tobacco and licorice are some of the many notes that resonate off the palate in the 2012. I wouldn't dream of touching a bottle before its tenth birthday, and that may ultimately prove to be optimistic. In 2012, yields were a minuscule 6-8 hectoliters per hectare.

    Wine Advocate (89-91)

The 2014 Beaune 1Er Cru Clos des Mouches was picked between September 16 and 19, completely destemmed and raised for 16 months in cask. Noticeably deep in color, it has a tight blackberry and briary-scented nose that needs to develop a little more complexity and tension. The palate is dense on the entry, well balanced and showing some oak at the moment that will need to be subsumed. There is respectable weight and substance here, a touch of chewiness but decent length. A bit broad-shouldered, give this Clos des Mouches 4-5 years in bottle.

Deep cherry red. Ripe and dark-red fruits and some savoury spice. Lovely dark mineral character yet still has deep fruit. Some oak sweetness and spice on the palate and this needs to die back. But the fruit is beautifully pure and the tannins fine and dry. Dry but surprisingly silky already.

This wine always shows such finesse and precision. The forward, approachable nose smells of blueberries, spice rack and anise. The center palate is supremely smooth and framed by lightly crusty tannins. Mouth-watering acidity closes the wine into a long, lightly smoky finish. 2023-32

Drouhin mentioned that quite a few barrels were deselected from this vineyard and blended into the Côte de Beaune Blanc. This possesses an intense bouquet with subtle scents of almond, praline and pressed white flower aromas. Pale lemon colour. The power is immediately apparent on the nose, but in a good way. A wine for longer elevage before bottling and then worth the wait in bottle thereafter. This has all the expected volume of white fruit while retaining impeccable balance. Adds depth with time in the glass, before reaching quite a saline finish. A very youthful but impressive Clos des Mouches. I recently enjoyed a stunning bottle of the 2017, and this could very well match it in due course. Tasted: November 2021

The 2015 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru is a class act in the making, perhaps one of the finest barrel samples that I have tasted from Drouhin. This gem has a gorgeous and extraordinarily pure bouquet with crushed strawberry, pomegranate and overripe orange scents that are exquisite and beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with super fine, almost filigree tannin that seem to caress the senses. It constitutes the most sophisticated of Drouhin's 2015s with ineffable finesse on the finish that lingers so long in the mouth. This is simply a brilliant wine.

Dense purple. Another nose that lacks freshness in the sample, but will be fine in the final wine. Plump deep raspberry, dense black fruit on the palate, inky and a little bit spicy, long and succulent, there is weight to this. Certainly has a very long classy finish, so one can see the potential.

The palate is very harmonious, open and transparent. It feels lighter than others, yet the tension and precision will see this age with style, and perhaps it will not close down. Tempting now, but I would prefer to wait. Classy. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

Blend of six different premiers crus vinified together (10% not owned by Drouhin), I think Véronique Drouhin said, but certainly blended quite early to provide some commercial volume. Final blend in tank, to be bottled by mid February 2021. Quite a deep crimson. The nose is a bit introvert at the moment, but the spread of subtle fruit across the palate is stunning! Velvety texture. This would make an excellent teaching tool to communicate Chambolle's special sumptuousness. Long and rich on the finish. Pure flattery.

    Vinous (92)

As with the white version, they pick this vineyard over several days. Final blend in tank, to be bottled by mid February 2021. Big and broad on the nose with heady, flattering, ‘sweet’ perfume. Lovely freshness and juiciness too. Clos des Mouches is always meant to be delicate. Lovely polish and very easy to like. Already quite approachable

The palate is taut and linear on the entry, featuring lovely orange pith and apricot notes and hints of tangerine and white chocolate toward the gorgeous, pure finish. Wonderful.

Cask sample. Mid purplish cherry red. Lovely floral and open nose. So pure and scented with cherry and violets. On the palate, some oak in evidence in sweet spice.

The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru has an open nose of brambly red fruit, sous-bois and wilted rose petals, very pure and charming, and not dissimilar in style to François Bertheau's Chambolle 1er Cru.
