Henri Gouges
About Domaine Henri Gouges
Domaine Henri Gouges’ wines are always built to last and are a cornerstone for any serious cellar. Production is small and, no matter what the vintage, demand is always high. The Gouges family established the current domaine in Nuits-St-Georges in 1919 and they still have a few bottles from their first vintages in the 1920s. Now joined by the next generation, Gregory Gouges, the historical house style is slowly changing and we found it more focused on the fruit rather than on the oak allowing the vineyards to show their distinct personalities.

Vinous (92)The 2011 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Porrets Saint-Georges 1er Cru has a fragrant bouquet with redcurrant and cranberry, a subtle seawater scent that emerges with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, packed full of blackcurrant and cranberry. There is a trademark leafiness that develops towards the firm, structured finish with traces of black tea on the aftertaste. Give this another two or three years in bottle. Tasted at the Gouges retrospective at La Cabotte. |

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (90-92)Good bright, deep red. Blackberry, minerals and crushed stone on the nose. Densely packed and concentrated, with savory dark berry, floral and licorice flavors leading to a youthfully powerful if rather strict finish. Classic sturdy Nuits-Saint-Georges but with lovely energy and finesse to its fruit. The big tannins spread out on the back end, yet the wine maintains a light touch. |

Jancis Robinson (16.5+)Light cherry red with a suggestion of vegetal undergrowth on the nose. Lively and refined. Cool impression with very refined tannins. Absolutely nothing like the rather stodgy, austere style of yesteryear. Not long term but very charming. |

Wine Advocate (93+)The 2015 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos des Porrets Saint Georges is—like the Vaucrains—already beginning to shut down, gradually unfurling in the glass with aromas of cassis, currant leaf, rich spice and raw cocoa. On the palate, the wine's fine-grained tannins take center stage for the moment, but its depth, concentration and energy are all very promising: the only missing ingredient is time. |

Decanter (94)This hails from a mid-slope premier cru on the south side of Nuits and mixes clay and limestone soils within the Gouges' 3.7ha monopole. It’s an intense, aromatic and comparatively early-drinking style with some chalky freshness, medium-weight tannins and a hint of volatility. |

Vinous (92)The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Porrets Saint-Georges 1er Cru has a well-defined bouquet, a mélange of red and black fruit, sous-bois and touches of crushed stone. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, saline and slightly peppery with a structured, quite firm yet balanced finish. Give this another couple of years in bottle. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting. |

Vinous (90-92)The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Porrets-Saint-Georges 1er Cru has a tightly wound bouquet, iris and incense notes dominating at the moment, slightly at the expense of terroir expression. The harmonious palate is medium-bodied with fleshy red berry fruit and a touch of white pepper and clove, dovetailing into a piquant, lively finish. All it lacks is a bit of persistence on the aftertaste. |

Tim Atkin MW (94)Antoine Gouges says this is a cooler terroir, like its neighbor Ch nes Quarteaux, because it is flatter and the Combe des Vallerots runs down one edge. Still, the warmth of the vintage comes through in the fruit with succulent blackberries and cassis. The tannins are, again, more old school with some stern grip. The focused, long finish shows a hint of oak toast with crushed slate. Just give this some time in bottle. 2025-40 |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94)Bottled yesterday! A vibrant fresh mid purple. Lots of energy too on the nose. Perhaps seems a little richer after yesterday’s bottling, which may have slightly muddied the waters - but this is clearly a good wine with plenty of dark red fruit and a good thread of acidity. The tannins are gentle. Drink from 2027-2033. Tasted: November 2022 |

Vinous - Neal Martin (92-94)The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Porrets-Saint-Georges 1er Cru had been racked the previous week, but it was essentially the final wine I tasted as it was just about to be bottled. It has a stricter and more backward bouquet than the Chênes Carteaux: blackberry and wild strawberry fruit, the 20% new oak neatly folded in. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannins, leaning more towards black fruit laced with tar and tobacco. Quite Morey-like towards the finish with impressive persistence. Give this two or three years in bottle to shave the edges. Very fine. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94)Racked to tank in October, to bottle in December. Deep purple. The bouquet is certainly a rich expression of pinot fruit without being over-ripe. Very full on the palate yet with energy through adequate acidity. Excellent balance and persistence. A fresh classic. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted Nov 2024. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-94)Racked to tank. Chaignots enjoyed a slightly better yield at just above 25 hl/ha, because there was more juice in the grapes. Full rich purple. The nose has similar basic characteristics of ripe fruit but is not too concentrated. Very good depth thereafter, and as with all the wines here the fruit is that little bit fresher on the palate than the nose. Good acidity at the finish. 14.2% alcohol. Tasted: November 2021 |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92)Medium deep crimson colour. The nose shows an assured ripeness of red berry fruit, supported by a little new oak (20%). Very pretty and quite floral on the nose, yet much more solid red fruit weight on the palate, with a little vanilla from the oak playing at the edges. Good length. Drink from 2026-2031. |

Vinous (92)The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Pruliers 1er Cru has an elegant bouquet of pure dark cherries and light loamy aromas; there is an admirable sense of cohesion here.
