Domaine Henri Gouges

About Domaine Henri Gouges

Domaine Henri Gouges’ wines are always built to last and are a cornerstone for any serious cellar. Production is small and, no matter what the vintage, demand is always high. The Gouges family established the current domaine in Nuits-St-Georges in 1919 and they still have a few bottles from their first vintages in the 1920s. Now joined by the next generation, Gregory Gouges, the historical house style is slowly changing and we found it more focused on the fruit rather than on the oak allowing the vineyards to show their distinct personalities.

Henri Gouges Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos des Porrets St-Georges 2018 (6x75cl)

Burghound (88-90)

A slightly fresher array is comprised by notes of cassis, red and dark berry liqueur and plenty of newly turned earth elements. There is better energy to the opulent and very rich medium weight flavors that terminate in a perceptibly warm finale that exhibits slightly better length.

Henri Gouges Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Chaignots 2019 (6x75cl)

Vinous (90-92)

The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Chaignots 1er Cru has a fragrant bouquet of brambly red berry fruit, plus a dusting of dark chocolate and damp undergrowth; gentle and attractive. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity. Fleshy toward the finish, delivering tart red fruit, this will be one of Gouge’s more approachable cuvées and should drink well for 12–15 years.

Henri Gouges Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers 2017 (6x75cl)

Burghound (90-93)

This too is noticeably reduced and aromatically unreadable today. Otherwise there is more volume and mid-palate density to the bigger and mostly muscular flavors that possess a less refined mouthfeel on the powerful, driving and more obviously structured finale. This is really quite good though at least some patience will be required.

2019

Henri Gouges Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers 2019 (6x75cl)

Vinous (92-94)

The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Pruliers 1er Cru was a little more reduced than Gouges’s other cuvées, opening gradually to reveal blackberry, wild hedgerow and incense. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, lithe and silky in the mouth, and fleshy with a judicious touch of white pepper toward the finish. The shortfall in grip and substance is sufficiently compensated with elegance.

2018

Henri Gouges Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Saint Georges 2018 (6x75cl)

Decanter (95)

The Gouges have a total of 1.08ha of what many consider to be a Grand Cru in all but name and always make one of the best expressions of the terroir. This is quite forward for a Les-St-Georges, with ripe, spicy, bramble and mulberry flavours, scented oak, some aromatic spices and a backbone of grippy tannins. At the more alcoholic end of the spectrum.

Henri Gouges Nuits-Saint-Georges 2015 (6x75cl)

Burghound (89-92)

Gouges noted that in 2015 the blend for this wine contains 40% from the 1er Chênes Carteaux so that there could be sufficient volume for their various markets. A background application of wood frames a similar if more complex and elegant array of ripe aromas. The sleek, round and delicious medium-bodied flavors possess lovely definition before terminating in a saline-inflected finish that is notably finer than it usually is. This offers simply terrific quality for its level and is highly recommended.

Henri Gouges Nuits-Saint-Georges 2017 (6x75cl)

Burghound (88-90)

Discreet wood serves as a relatively neutral backdrop for the fresh aromas of red currant and earth that are laced with plenty of sauvage character. The rich, mouth coating and sappy medium weight flavors possess fine volume while concluding in a nicely persistent finish that is, if not exactly refined, then certainly less rustic than usual.
