Grand Veneur

The Jaume family founded Domaine Grand Veneur, tending its vines since 1826. Alain has run this Southern Rhone estate since 1979, now helped by his two sons. He has a long term approach, respecting their great terroir and preserving their legacy. The wine is a traditional style, except the Chateauneufs which are distinctly modern. It is some of the most exciting wine from the region, whilst standing the test of time as it ages well.

Grand Veneur Chateauneuf-du-Pape VV 2015 (6x75cl)

Tim Atkin (94)

Generous and densely-packed berry fruits on the nose. Lovely smooth texture and superfine tannin, good length of fruit. A distinct step up from their Les Origines bottling. It’s powerful but vibrant.

Grand Veneur Chateauneuf-du-Pape VV 2016 (6x75cl)

Jeb Dunnuck (100)

The 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes is up with the crème de la crème of the vintage and in the same league as the perfect 2010. Awesome notes of blackberries, crème de cassis, charred meats, licorice, and violets all soar from the glass. It's powerful, opulent, and structured, with building tannin, a huge mid-palate, and a blockbuster finish, yet it never loses its sense of purity and elegance. It's an incredible achievement from this estate. The blend is 45% Grenache, 45% Mourvèdre, and 10% Syrah, all aged in 55% new French oak.

Grand Veneur Chateauneuf-du-Pape VV 2019 (6x75cl)

Jeb Dunnuck (96-99)

Lastly, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes is more classic, with a fresh, vibrant, full-bodied style that carries seriously dense black and blue fruits, graphite, scorched earth, and peppery garrigue like aromas and flavors. Rich, powerful, and with plenty of structure, it’s going to need bottle age but is certainly a tremendous wine in the making. The blend is 45% each of Grenache and Mourvèdre, with 10% Syrah, that was vinified in stainless steel and aged in 55% new barrels and the balance in concrete tanks.
