Fontodi

Fontodi has been in the Manetti family since the 1960's after they grew tired of the role they had held for centuries prior; producing the iconic terracotta tiles which adorn the roofs of wineries and homes throughout Tuscany. Pursuing a policy of meticulous attention to detail and craftsmanship, the estate has become one of the most well-known names in Tuscany and for good reason. Producing some of the regions finest example of Chianti Classico alongside the iconic Super Tuscan, Flaccianello della Pieve, Fontodi is an essential player in Italian wine.

Fontodi Case Via Pinot Nero 2016 (6x75cl)

Vinous (96)

The 2016 Pinot Nero Case Via is fabulous. In fact, the 2016 may very well be the finest edition of Fontodi's Pinot I have ever tasted. A wine of tremendous aromatic intensity, inner sweetness and delineation, the 2016 Pinot simply has it all. Of course, the highly favorable growing season adds quite a bit of pedigree as well. The Fontodi Pinot is not especially varietal, but it is off the charts beautiful and absolutely compelling. It was fermented in terra cotta and aged in French oak, 50% new. What a wine!

Fontodi Chianti Classico 2010 (6x75cl)

Vinous (93)

The 2010 Chianti Classico boasts striking inner perfume, but is otherswise very shut down. Today, the 2010 seems to combine the finesse of the 2004 with some of the structure of the 2006. Clean veins of 2010 acidity support the brilliant, sensual finish. The 2010 is a gorgeous wine with a bright future, although readers will need to be patient.

Fontodi Chianti Classico 2014 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (89)

The 2014 Chianti Classico is just hitting the market now. This is a light and delicate expression of Sangiovese that delivers floral notes of lavender and violet that are characteristic of a cooler vintage. The wine’s appearance is one mild tone lighter in terms of color and overall concentration. Keeping in theme, the mouthfeel is beautifully driven by tonic freshness and polished elegance.

James Suckling (95)

The purity of fruit here really makes an impression on you. The nose shines with freshly picked blackcurrants, dark plums, freshly cut herbs, cinnamon, raspberry cheesecake, glazed cherries, orange and lemon rind. The palate is so well-crafted with a silky ball of tannins surrounded by layers of blue and red fruit and enveloping acidity. A long finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink now or hold.

Fontodi Chianti Classico 2016 (6x75cl)

Vinous (94)

The 2016 Chianti Classico Fontodi brings together all the elements that make the Fontodi wines so unique, but with an extra kick of freshness and aromatic intensity that is the result of a year with notable diurnal shifts during the growing season. Dark blue/purplish fruit, lavender, spice and menthol develop in the glass, but it is the wine's extraordinary balance and sheer appeal that stand out most. In time, 2016 may very well become the new benchmark for Fontodi's Chianti Classico. The 2016 is flat-out delicious. That's pretty much all there is to it.

Fragrant and delicious, this opens with aromas of ripe black-skinned fruit, blue flower, leather, underbrush and a whiff of French oak. The full-bodied, enveloping palate delivers baked plum, Marasca cherry, licorice and a note of espresso framed in fine-grained enveloping tannins that give it a smooth texture and a weightless finesse.

Fontodi Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo 2014 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (92-94)

I tasted the 2014 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo the day before it was to be bottled. The time the wine spent in barrique was shortened slightly to compensate for the delicate quality of fruit produced in this cool vintage. This 2014 edition is aged in barrel for 20 months, compared to 24 months for a warmer vintage such as 2012. The wine’s time in botte grande was extended to four months (instead of the usual one month usually employed) to afford more time for complete integration. The age of the Vigna del Sorbo vines is old enough to protect the plants from extreme temperatures. The vines are comfortably in their production prime. The fruit is balanced and bright with lively cherry and raspberry flavors followed by ethereal tones of crushed mineral, blue flower and balsam herb. Although the wine sports less overall volume, the finish is extremely polished and fine. It should flesh out further over the next year.

This is always an entrancing Gran Selezione and the 2016 shows dried raspberries, boysenberries, vanilla and brambleberries. Full-bodied and tightly wound with eye-catching minerality. The acidity sharpens out the exuberant red fruit perfectly. Incredible length and drinkability. Is this better even than the great 2015? I think so. From organically grown grapes. Drink in 2023.

Fontodi Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo 2017 (6x75cl)

Vinous (96+)

The 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo is a dense, packed wine. It is also surprisingly, almost shockingly backward. That is probably a good thing for its long-term aging prospects. Readers hoping to get an early glimpse into the 2017 before it shuts down may have a hard time doing that, as today acids and tannin dominate. I expect the 2017 will be stellar in another 4-5 years and drink well to age 25-30 if not longer. Proprietor Giovanni Manetti gave the 2017 18 months in barrique followed by 6 months in cask.

Fontodi Chianti Classico Riserva Vigna del Sorbo 2015 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (96+)

The 2015 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo (100% Sangiovese) is a wine that inspires a deep, deep breath into your glass. There's so much to take in and admire. So where to start? First, the wine shows a beautiful appearance that is thick and dark but allows for just enough ambient light to make it shine with ruby rays from deep inside. Then you have the bouquet that presents a solid wall of interwoven and ultimately beautifully balanced aromas. There is dark fruit, tobacco, leather, spice and polished river stone. Lastly, the mouthfeel reveals a similar level of extreme flavor equilibrium with very fine but still very young tannins. That mid-weight structure, matched to the wine's natural acidity, is a major guarantee of longevity. Bottle production in this vintage is 30,000 units strong.

Fontodi Flaccianello della Pieve 2012 (6x75cl)

Vinous (97)

The 2012 Flaccianello della Pieve, a selection of the estate's best fruit, presents a darker, more virile expression of Sangiovese. Here, too, the purity of the flavors is truly striking. Cinnamon, cloves, new leather, licorice and plums are some of the notes that soar from the glass. The 2012 is full-bodied and voluptuous, in classic Flaccianello style, but the new French oak is much better integrated than it often is at this stage, the result of a move to lower toast levels over the last few years. This is one of the finest young Flaccianellos I can remember. Simply put, the 2012 Flaccianello is a real stunner. Wow!

Fontodi Flaccianello della Pieve 2014 (6x75cl)

Vinous (96)

The 2014 Flaccianello della Pieve will probably drink well a bit earlier than the Vigna del Sorbo, as it has more midpalate creaminess, softer contours and a slightly more immediate personality. Even so, the translucent finesse of the vintage is very much in evidence. A rush of black cherry, plum, tobacco, licorice, chocolate and spice infuses the sweet, creamy finish. The 2014 spent 18 months in oak (less than was once the norm), 80% of it new.

The 2017 Flaccianello della Pieve is fabulous. Dark, sensual and enveloping, the 2017 captures the essence of the house style in its textural richness and baritone inflections. Black cherry, plum, spice, new leather, licorice and chocolate infuse the 2017 with tremendous richness. The 2017 spent 18 months in barrique followed by 6 months in cask, the same aging regime as the Vigna del Sorbo, but with a bit more new oak.
