    Domaine Dujac

    About Domaine Dujac

Domaine Dujac remains one of the most revered producers of Burgundy and continues to drive Burgundy collectors mad with desire. Founded in 1968 by Jacques Seysses, who spent years travelling around Burgundy honing his craft by learning from the likes of Aubert de Villaine of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Charles Rousseau of Domaine Armand Rousseau.

This Morey-Saint-Denis-based producer is one of the region’s top cult wineries. Gaining a reputation for rich, full-bodied Red Burgundy, the modus operandi was to make use of whole-cluster fermentation and 100% new oak. A trademark style continued until 1999, the estate remains one of the most sought-after, distinctive sources of Burgundy.

Dujac's 2011 Morey St. Denis 1er Cru blossoms beautifully in the glass. Dark red cherry, plum, smoke and mint open up nicely in a supple, layered Burgundy with considerable near and medium-term appeal. This is a representative example of the vintage.

Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, the 2014 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru from Dujac was one of the talking points of the tasting. It performed extremely well compared to its peers (note that this is a domaine bottling and not Dujac Fils & Père). It has quite an intense bouquet with signs of some whole bunch addition but backed with plenty of dark red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with good body and substance, well-judged acidity, perhaps with the whole bunch defining the wine more than the terroir at this early juncture, although that will not always be the case. Give this time in bottle if you want the birthplace of this wine to express itself. Dujac lovers should have some of this in their cellars—very, very impressive. Tasted September 2017.

The 2019 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru shows more overt whole bunch influence compared to the preceding Chambolle-Village, touches of tea leaf infusing the black cherry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine bead of acidity, very harmonious and with fine salinity towards the elegant finish. Understated and refined.

(5 Star Wine) In bottle. A blend from Millandes, Sorbè, Ruchots, Chaffots. Lovely deep crimson purple, with a delicious opulent but precise and balanced nose. Very exciting. A cuvée that's often the insiders' choice chez Dujac, the 2021 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru has turned out well, mingling aromas of plums and berries with hints of baking spice and orange rind. Medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, it's layered and textural, with sweet tannins, lively acids and a perfumed finish.

The 2019 Morey-Saint-Denis Monts Luisants Blanc 1er Cru has such a pretty aromas with lemon thyme and lemon verbena aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with a tangy, quince-tinged opening matched with a fine bead of acidity. Whereas the Morey Village Blanc remains quite linear, this gently fans out on its pure orange pith and apricot-tinged finish. Maybe not a long-term Monts Luisants, yet it will certainly given much drinking fulfilment over the following decade.

The 2020 Morey-Saint-Denis Monts Luisants Blanc 1er Cru was picked around midway through the harvest. It has a tightly-coiled bouquet that takes time to open, touches dew-speckled Granny Smiths and pressed white flowers. The palate is fresh and vibrant with fine acidity, very impressive weight with a tangy, tangerine-tinged finish. This might well be my pick from Dujac’s whites this year. Excellent.

Bright, deep red-ruby. Briary black raspberry, smoke and mocha on the musky nose. Dense, musky and sweet, with a hint of malic acidity giving an edge to the black raspberry, mineral and chocolate flavors. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins. This cuvee got a total of just two pigeages, as the fruit needed a gentle extraction owing to some drought stress, according to Jeremy Seysses.

The Dujac 2006 Romanee St.-Vivant is extraordinarily perfumed by black raspberry, lily, honeysuckle, narcissus, ginger, star anise, and fennel pollen, all of which are complimented rather than contradicted by a bit of sweet new woodiness. (Seysses says his toasting instructions for these barrels – there were only two of Romanee St.-Vivant this year; half a barrique less than in 2005 – were misunderstood, with the result that it wasn't quite deep enough and there is a bit of superficial coconut aroma, about which, he adds, I am not concerned long-term.) A musky sense of liquid floral perfume and liqueur-like essence of spiced black fruits and Pinot carnality inform the rich, dense palate of this exceptional, almost endlessly lingering elixir which simultaneously marries near-implosive concentration with animation, elegance, and sheer refreshment. You could – perhaps, should, were you to be lucky enough to acquire some – spend an entire evening savoring this, not to mention the next 12-15 years smugly savoring the knowledge that some exists in your cellar.

The 2009 Romanée St. Vivant has come together beautifully since I tasted it last year. Sweet red cherries, roses, mint and orange peel float on the palate in this sensual, utterly beguiling wine. This is an effortless, gracious Burgundy of the highest level. The 2009 character comes through in spades, but there is something about the Romanée St. Vivant that transcends vintage. Call it the utmost in classicism. The Romanée St. Vivant can be slow out of the gate, but once it starts blossoming in bottle it is truly majestic. Readers lucky enough to find the 2009 are in for a treat.

Good bright, full red. Aromas of crushed red berries, eucalyptus and blood orange, given even more punch by a suggestion of citrus peel. Pungent and penetrating in the mouth, with the crushed-grape character giving this very pure, focused wine an extremely primary quality today. With its rather powerful tannic spine, this is an infant. I would not be surprised if it needed 15 years to approach its plane of peak maturity.

Bright, dark red. Sexy high-toned lift to the aromas of raspberry, cocoa powder and spicecake, complicated by a minty nuance. Silky and intense on entry, then utterly primary in the middle, with urgent crushed red fruit and spice flavors that are almost too big for the mouth. The explosive finish features strong, noble tannins and outstanding rising length. This wine began in two new 225-liter barriques and was then racked into one new and one one-year-old barrel in October.

(there are two 300-liter barrels of this juice, one new and the other one year old): Aromas of candied raspberry and spicy oak. Hugely ripe and voluptuous, displaying a liqueur-like sweetness to its red cherry and red berry flavors. Still quite primary, even a bit monolithic, and in need of further refinement. Finishes with chewy, granular tannins and palate-staining fruit. This will be spectacular.

This has more intensity than the Chambertin. The palate is beguiling in terms of balance, utterly harmonious with filigree tannins. Domaine Dujac's 2015 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts is one of the highlights of a superb range, bursting from the glass with aromas of blackberry, cassis, plum, rose petal, licorice and spice. Despite its aromatic flamboyance, on the palate the wine is controlled—even reserved—with immense concentration and a bottomless core, its tannins fine-grained but firm, asserting themselves on the finish. The overriding impression is of depth and substance, but this Malconsorts is clearly shutting down; those with the patience to cellar it for a decade or more will reap the rewards.

Touches of cracked black pepper and sage lend complexity to the dark berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, very harmonious with white pepper and clove, a lovely grainy texture and perhaps more refinement compared to the Echézeaux. The kind of Vosne-Romanée that you want to elope with.

The 2018 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru has a reserved and tightly wound bouquet of dark berry fruit, sea cave/oyster shell, raspberry preserve and faint touches of fireside ash. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a fine bead of acidity and a classy, almost Richebourg-like, arching structure that possesses enormous length. Fabulous.

The 2019 Romanée Saint-Vivant Grand Cru is glorious, regal on the nose with black cherries, bilberry, light oyster shell and that has exquisite delineation. This has more intensity than the Chambertin. The palate is beguiling in terms of balance, utterly harmonious with filigree tannins. This is extremely pure and long, lightly spiced towards the finish and an extraordinarily long on the aftertaste. Utterly sublime and sensual, just as a Romanée-Saint-Vivant ought to be.

    Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (91-94)

(this had recently been racked and sulfited) Good deep red. Pure aromas of musky wild strawberry and brown spices. Sweet, lush and harmonious, with captivating flavors of tangy strawberry and soft spices. Really caresses the palate. Finishes with subtle persistence and sweet, fine tannins. A superb showing.

Both more concentrated and more introverted than the preceding Beaux Monts, Dujac's 2017 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts opens in the glass with aromas of sweet red berries, plums, orange rind, smoked duck and peonies. On the palate, it's full-bodied, supple and elegantly muscular, with fine depth at the core, powdery tannins and mouthwatering acids, concluding with a perfumed finish.

    Vinous (95-97)

The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Aux Malconsorts 1er Cru has a more savory bouquet than the Les Beaux Monts, the whole bunch less integrated by direct comparison and yet it also delivers more terroir expression and mineralité.
