Faiveley

About Domaine Faiveley

Domaine Faiveley, established in 1825 in Nuits Saint Georges. Pierre Faiveley was born in the village of Nuits. A cobbler by trade, he was also passionate about wine and founded 'Masion Joseph Faiveley' in 1825. He worked simultaneously on his cobbler and wine merchant business up until the end of the 1840s when he decided to invest all of his time and energy in the wine.

Faiveley is the biggest vineyard owner in Burgundy as a result of careful acquisitions over 150 years. 100% family-owned, the seventh generation now run the show. The new generation is changing winemaking to make the wines more approachable. They use a vertical press, which is gentler and breaks the caps less and a pneumatic press used for whites and also some reds.

Faiveley Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Aux Beaux Bruns 2015 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (87)

The 2015 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Aux Beaux Bruns from Joseph Faiveley is notably reduced on the nose, notes of raspberry, cherry and candied peel only emerging with extended aeration. On the palate, the wine is sappy, medium to full-bodied and a bit dried out from its reduction which renders it rather inscrutable, though the raw materials seem to be good. If this shakes off its reduction as it ages it may end up being very good, but my instinct is that it is a sadly stillborn Chambolle.

Faiveley Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2018 (6x75cl)

Burghound (92-94)

The level of new wood and menthol are borderline intrusive and while it does not dominate the underlying fruit of poached plum and cassis, it would be fair to say that it's not subtle. The succulent and impressively concentrated flavors are almost viscous as well as highly seductive, all wrapped in bitter cherry pit-inflected, youthfully austere and beautifully long finish. This promising effort appears to have more than enough density to eventually absorb the wood treatment.

Earthy red berry fruit aromas trimmed in a discreet touch of wood spice are laced with earth, forest floor and violet hints. The full-bodied and tautly muscled broad-shouldered flavors possess excellent power and detail on the stunningly long, mildly rustic and youthfully austere finish. This is quite serious and clearly very structured yet it stops short of being overtly old school in style; that said, this will not be an early drinker.

A small cuvée of some 900 bottles, derived from the most steeply sloping part of Faiveley's holdings in this climat where the vines produce small, shot berries, the 2019 Mercurey 1er Cru Clos du Roy La Favorite unwinds in the glass with notes of sweet berries, cherries, spices, orange rind and petals. Faiveley Mercurey 1er Cru Clos du Roy La Favorite 2017 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (93+)

From vines planted in 1982 in the sloping, southeast-facing part of Faiveley's parcel in the Clos du Roy, the 2017 Mercurey 1er Cru Clos du Roy La Favorite offers up a more overtly oak-inflected bouquet of dark berry fruit, spices, incense and vanilla pod. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and muscular, with ripe acids and an ample chassis of powdery tannin framing a nicely concentrated core of fruit. This shows definite promise, but it will demand some patience.

Faiveley Mercurey 1er Cru Clos du Roy La Favorite 2018 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (93+)

Faiveley's 2018 Mercurey 1er Cru Clos du Roy La Favorite has turned out brilliantly, mingling aromas of blackberries and cassis with nuances of licorice, violets and coniferous forest floor. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and concentrated, it's seamless and layered, with fine depth at the core, succulent acids and a long, expansive finish. This would embarrass plenty of wines from the Côte de Nuits in a blind tasting.

Faiveley Mercurey 1er Cru Clos du Roy 2019 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (94)

A small cuvée of some 900 bottles, derived from the most steeply sloping part of Faiveley's holdings in this climat where the vines produce small, shot berries, the 2019 Mercurey 1er Cru Clos du Roy La Favorite unwinds in the glass with notes of sweet berries, cherries, spices, orange rind and petals. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and supple, it's layered and multidimensional, with fine depth at the core and a long, sapid finish.

Faiveley Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Damodes 2019 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (92-94)

Aromas of cassis, plums, orange rind and spicy new oak preface Faiveley's 2019 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Damodes, a medium to full-bodied, deep and lively wine with a concentrated core of fruit, framed by powdery tannins. Concluding with a long, mineral finish, it's another fine bottling from this cool, high-altitude and northeast-exposed site.
