Comte Liger-Belair
Although the Domaine is relatively recent, Louis-Michel Liger-Belair, an engineer and oenologist, is renewing a two hundred year old family tradition. The vines are biodynamicaly cultivated and a horse ploughs part of the vineyard. Owning excellent vineyards, he produces wines that are light, aromatic and elegant.

Vinous (98)The 2017 La Romanée Grand Cru shows a minuscule touch of VA on the nose, but not enough to cover the intense brambly red fruit underneath, or the veins of blueberry and violet; instead, it lends energy to the aromatics. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, a killer line of acidity, and firm but fine, satin-textured tannins. This is full of energy and tension and finishes amazingly long and reassuringly luxuriant. Utterly sublime, and it surpasses my expectations from barrel. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting. |

Vinous (87-89)The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Lavières was showing some reduction on the nose, making it difficult to read during my visit. The medium-bodied palate features sappy black fruit tinged with wild mint, moderate weight, and hints of licorice toward the finish. Not bad, but I find its exotic elements just a little distracting. |

Vinous (94)The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Aux Reignots 1er Cru has a lot of fruit on the nose (mulberry, red plums and crushed strawberry) and comes across plush and quite oaky, with a little reduction to address. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannins and quite rounded, though at the moment, this is dictated by the new oak, which renders the finish a bit generic. The oak may well be absorbed with age, allowing the fruit to shine. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting. |

Vinous (86-88)The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Village was completely de-stemmed this year. The dark cherry and cranberry bouquet is pure and well-defined. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, offering black cherries and a hint of cassis, plus a touch of orange peel on the finish. Fine, although it is not the very best Village Cru from the appellation. |
