Comte Armand

One of the most iconic producers in the Côte de Beaune, Comte Armand's holdings include some of the greatest vineyards of Pommard and Volnay, as well as a wealth of enviable plots across the region. They have become well-reputed as a source of long-lived wines of the highest pedigree as well as a producer of excellent value wines from Auxey-Duresses and entry-level offerings from Bourgogne. The domaine's history dates back to 1826, making it a stalwart of the region and one of Burgundy's essential producers for almost 200 years.

Comte Armand Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru 2015 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (90-92)

The 2015 Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru, which is a blend of 60% Breterins and 40% Les Bas des Duresses close to Monthélie, had received a bit of SO2 a week before my visit and was due to be transferred into tank for around two months. It contains 10% whole bunch fruit this year and sees 20% new oak. It has a sensual bouquet with black cherries, raspberry and confit fruit all with fine delineation. The tannins here are finer than the village cru as you would expect, the acidity nicely judged (3.4 pH) with a poised and tensile finish that delivers a welcome salinity on the finish. This comes highly recommended and is certainly one of the best 2015s that I have encountered from the appellation.

Wine Advocate (90-92)

The 2016 Auxey Duresses 1er Cru was reduced to eight barrels this year with one of those new, and the fruit this year including 10% whole bunch. It has a clean and fresh black plum and red cherry-scented bouquet that is nicely defined. I appreciate the purity here, simmering undergrowth scents tucked just underneath the carapace of fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit—cranberry and raspberry preserve—with a light tang of soy toward the vivacious finish and a pinch of black pepper on the aftertaste. There is not much of it, but what there is, is delightful.

Comte Armand Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru 2017 (6x75cl)

Vinous (90-92)

The 2017 Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru, a blend of two vineyards and, unlike 2015 and 2016, completely de-stemmed, has a deeper, slightly blacker nose than the Village Cru, certainly displaying more mineralité at this primordial stage. The well-defined palate is taut and linear, displaying impressive backbone considering the appellation in question. This is a great Auxey-Duresses, full of tension and vigor, offering lovely blackberry, black olive and saline notes toward the finish. Don’t overlook this gem from Comte Armand.

Vinous (89-91)

The 2019 Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru, a blend of two vineyards Les Beautrains and Les Bas des Duresses as usual, matured in around 25% new oak. It has a refined bouquet with a little more purity and sensuality compared to the Auxey Village. The palate is well balanced with gentle grip on the entry, quite rich but fresh in style with candied orange peel infusing the mixture of black and blueberry fruit. Crunchy, almost brittle texture towards the finish which is surprising given the type of growing season. Recommended.

Wine Advocate (89-91)

The 2015 Auxey-Duresses Village, a blend of 35- and 65-year-old vines, had finished its malolactic a week prior to my visit. It has an ebullient nose with blackberry, bilberry and dried violet scents, well defined and almost Volnaysian in style thanks to its richness. The 14 degrees natural alcohol on the palate is neatly disguised by the 3.33 pH. It feels generous and deep, cut with a sorbet-like freshness, whilst the finish has an attractive grainy texture and good backbone for a village cru.

The 2017 Auxey-Duresses Village has a well-defined, slightly earthy bouquet of attractive black fruit. The medium-bodied palate features notes of bilberry and veins of black olive, the modest 12% new oak lending a smooth sheen. The saline, quite rounded finish suggests that this will make fine early drinking.

The 2019 Bourgogne Aligoté had been racked the morning of my visit with the intention of bottling in a few weeks time. Wine Advocate (94)

The 2008 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux is far superior to the 2005. It is relatively backward on the nose, but it has startling delineation with open, natural red-berry fruit – predominantly freshly picked strawberries, raspberry and pomegranate. With continued aeration it offers a cheeky hint of white chocolate. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, supple tannins. This is very harmonious and feminine with a silky texture that lends it a Vosne-like finish. What a lovely 2008! Drink now-2022+

Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, the 2014 Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux from Comte Armand has quite a nuanced nose with dusky red berry fruit, autumn leaves and a touch of stewed black tea. I like the cohesion and focus here. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine line of acidity, nicely balanced and supple in the mouth. There is something easy-drinking and approachable about this Pommard: well crafted and with satisfying tension. While not the greatest in recent vintages, this is still a pleasurable Pommard that overcame the hail that destroyed 90% of the vineyard that year. Tasted September 2017.

The 2016 Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux contains 10% whole-bunch fruit. I tasted from two cuvées, one from the young vines and one from the old. The young vines has clean and pure black cherry, red plum and lightly blueberry fruit that conveys a sense of energy. The palate is well balanced with succulent ripe black fruit, very fine tannin, a taut line of acidity but real complexity and tension from start to finish. I love the harmony and effortlessness of these younger vines. The cuvée from older vines demonstrated more black fruit with traces of undergrowth, a little more rondeur with impressive depth and structure on the persistent, marine/oyster shell-tinged finish. This has enormous potential and may challenge the supremacy of the 2015.

Comte Armand Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux 2018 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (93-95+)

As usual, I sampled the various constituents of the cuvée before tasting a representative blend of the 2018 Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux, and as ever, the whole is superior to the sum of the parts. Wafting from the glass with a deep bouquet of raspberries, cherries, peonies, spices, orange rind, cassis, woodsmoke and espresso roast, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, its lively and concentrated core of fruit framed by rich structuring tannins, concluding with a long and sapid finish. This promises to number among the Côte de Beaune's wines of the vintage, and it will be well worth seeking out.

Comte Armand Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux 2019 (6x75cl)

Vinous (93-95)

The 2019 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru was picked over three days starting with the young vines on 14 September. This is almost completely de-stemmed and matured in around 40% new oak. It has a very intense bouquet with black cherries, blueberry, crushed limestone, traces of violet and blood orange. The palate is very well balanced, quite opulent in style with a saline, briny note on the entry. Very good depth, fleshier in style than recent vintages with brown spices and cloves towards the persistent finish. I suspect that this might be more approachable than other vintages of Clos des Epeneaux but it will still age with style.

It has a lovely, expressive, transparent bouquet of brambly red fruit, sous-bois and rose petal scents. The elegant, pure palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and raspberry and red plum notes, the 8% whole bunches lending a little je ne sais quoi toward the precise finish. Beautiful.

The 2018 Volnay Les Frémiets 1er Cru, tasted from a 2016 barrel, has tightly wound bouquet, blackberry and raspberry fruit, hints of blood orange and a light vanilla-y note that emerges with aeration. The palate is well balanced with fine-grained tannins. This feels a little tauter than the 2017, more "streamlined" perhaps, which is a surprise given the warmth of the later summer, though it is the limestone soils that keep a tight leash on precocity. This has great potential.

In contrast to the first two wines, here the nose is sufficiently reduced to render an evaluation difficult. Comte Armand Auxey-Duresses Rouge 2015 (6x75cl)

Vinous (87-89)

The 2017 Auxey-Duresses Village has a well-defined, slightly earthy bouquet of attractive black fruit. The medium-bodied palate features notes of bilberry and veins of black olive, the modest 12% new oak lending a smooth sheen. The saline, quite rounded finish suggests that this will make fine early drinking.

Vinous (86-88)

The 2019 Bourgogne Aligoté had been racked the morning of my visit with the intention of bottling in a few weeks time. It has a lovely rosewater and apricot tinged bouquet that gets both hands on the grape variety. The palate is well balanced with orange zest and light apricot notes, a very pretty Aligoté with a precise finish. Lovely.

Wine Advocate (90)

Wine Advocate (93-95)

The 2017 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru has a wonderful bouquet that fulfills its potential from barrel, offering immediately seductive brambly red fruit, crushed minerals and pressed rose petals. The 25–30% new oak is so neatly folded into the fruit that it is barely noticeable. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and quite citrus-driven, revealing orange peel and blood orange notes. Linear at first and then gently fans out and gains depth toward the persistent finish. Superb.

Comte Armand Volnay 1er Cru Fremiets 2017 (6x75cl)

Vinous (91-93)

The 2017 Volnay Les Frémiets 1er Cru comes from a single parcel including a plot of 92-year-old vines that was on the cusp of being pulled up after the 2016 frost. Beautiful.

Comte Armand Volnay 1er Cru Fremiets 2018 (6x75cl)

Vinous (92-94)

The 2018 Volnay Les Frémiets 1er Cru, tasted from a 2016 barrel, has tightly wound bouquet, blackberry and raspberry fruit, hints of blood orange and a light vanilla-y note that emerges with aeration. The palate is well balanced with fine-grained tannins. This feels a little tauter than the 2017, more "streamlined" perhaps, which is a surprise given the warmth of the later summer, though it is the limestone soils that keep a tight leash on precocity. This has great potential.

Comte Armand Volnay 2017 (6x75cl)

Burghound (88-91)

In contrast to the first two wines, here the nose is sufficiently reduced to render an evaluation difficult. By contrast there is good freshness and verve to the more precisely detailed middle weight flavors where the supporting tannins are notably finer even though the finish is also ever-so-slightly rustic. A quality Volnay villages.

Vinous (90-92)

The 2019 Volnay Village is a blend of 60% Les Grands Champs and 40% Les Famines. This underwent a 5/6-day cold maceration and was completely de-stemmed. It has more red fruit than the Auxey-Duresses with scents of raspberry coulis and crushed strawberry, very pure and perfumed, quite floral in style. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannins, fleshy and fresh in the mouth with a touch of piquancy towards the bright and joyful finish. This Volnay has a lot of sucrosity and will be difficult to resist in its youth.
