One of the most iconic producers in the Côte de Beaune, Comte Armand's holdings include some of the greatest vineyards of Pommard and Volnay, as well as a wealth of enviable plots across the region. They have become well-reputed as a source of long-lived wines of the highest pedigree as well as a producer of excellent value wines from Auxey-Duresses and entry-level offerings from Bourgogne. The domaine's history dates back to 1826, making it a stalwart of the region and one of Burgundy's essential producers for almost 200 years.

    Comte Armand Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru 2015 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (90-92)

The 2015 Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru, which is a blend of 60% Breterins and 40% Les Bas des Duresses close to Monthélie, had received a bit of SO2 a week before my visit and was due to be transferred into tank for around two months. It contains 10% whole bunch fruit this year and sees 20% new oak. It has a sensual bouquet with black cherries, raspberry and confit fruit all with fine delineation. The tannins here are finer than the village cru as you would expect, the acidity nicely judged (3.4 pH) with a poised and tensile finish that delivers a welcome salinity on the finish. This comes highly recommended and is certainly one of the best 2015s that I have encountered from the appellation.

    Comte Armand Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru 2019 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (89-91)

The 2019 Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru, a blend of two vineyards Les Beautrains and Les Bas des Duresses as usual, matured in around 25% new oak. It has a refined bouquet with a little more purity and sensuality compared to the Auxey Village. The palate is well balanced with gentle grip on the entry, quite rich but fresh in style with candied orange peel infusing the mixture of black and blueberry fruit. Crunchy, almost brittle texture towards the finish which is surprising given the type of growing season. Recommended.

Ripe, concentrated currant and plum fruit, with hints of smoke, mineral and leather on the nose, plus firm but finely-grained tannins balanced with fresh acidity, delivering a wine that's both exuberantly fruity yet structured and long. Blended from two lieux-dits: 60% Bretérins and 40% Bas de Duresses. This wine is always a standout in the portfolio and it is terrific in 2020.

    Wine Advocate (89-91)

The 2015 Auxey-Duresses Village, a blend of 35- and 65-year-old vines, had finished its malolactic a week prior to my visit. It has an ebullient nose with blackberry, bilberry and dried violet scents, well defined and almost Volnaysian in style thanks to its richness. The 14 degrees natural alcohol on the palate is neatly disguised by the 3.33 pH. It feels generous and deep, cut with a sorbet-like freshness, whilst the finish has an attractive grainy texture and good backbone for a village cru.

The 2017 Auxey-Duresses Village has a well-defined, slightly earthy bouquet of attractive black fruit. The medium-bodied palate features notes of bilberry and veins of black olive, the modest 12% new oak lending a smooth sheen. The saline, quite rounded finish suggests that this will make fine early drinking.

Big crop picked 16th September, below Pommard and Volnay and Meursault. Made half and half in 600 litre barrels and stainless steel. A little deeper in colour and indeed in bouquet than the Chardonnay. Apple and fresh quince, mostly young vine produce, but this is absolutely delicious, and sweeps through to a long finish. I tasted this wine on three occasions (including from barrel) this year and it's one of the best releases I've ever tasted from the domaine. Benjamin Leroux has crafted a very fine Pommard, especially in the circumstances. (bottled in June of 2016): Dark red. Deep fruit aromas of plum and redcurrant are complicated by leather, game and earth nuances. Surprisingly silky and broad, with its red fruit and smoke flavors joined by a note of milk chocolate. The wine's substantial dusty but ultimately refined tannins currently shorten its finish but there's enough mid-palate density here for this wine to come into balance with bottle aging. Finishes with hints of olive tapenade and milk chocolate. With aeration this wine showed a lovely combination of sweetness and acidity.

The 2016 Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux contains 10% whole-bunch fruit. I tasted from two cuvées, one from the young vines and one from the old. The young vines has clean and pure black cherry, red plum and lightly blueberry fruit that conveys a sense of energy. The palate is well balanced with succulent ripe black fruit, very fine tannin, a taut line of acidity but real complexity and tension from start to finish. I love the harmony and effortlessness of these younger vines. The cuvée from older vines demonstrated more black fruit with traces of undergrowth, a little more rondeur with impressive depth and structure on the persistent, marine/oyster shell-tinged finish. This has enormous potential and may challenge the supremacy of the 2015.

The 2019 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru was picked over three days starting with the young vines on 14 September. This is almost completely de-stemmed and matured in around 40% new oak. It has a very intense bouquet with black cherries, blueberry, crushed limestone, traces of violet and blood orange. The palate is very well balanced, quite opulent in style with a saline, briny note on the entry. Very good depth, fleshier in style than recent vintages with brown spices and cloves towards the persistent finish. I suspect that this might be more approachable than other vintages of Clos des Epeneaux but it will still age with style.

The final blend of this is superb, including both the energy of the young vines and the density of the old. They deliver a lush, spicy fruit with a strong mineral underpinning, a dense texture, firm but supple tannins and an infinitely rewarding finish. The Clos des Epeneaux is produced from a monopole of 5.23ha located at the juncture of Grands Epenots (20%) and Petits Epenots (80%). The clos is divided by regisseur Paul Zinetti into four main subdivisions by age of vine and underlying soils which are farmed and vinified separately.

The 2010 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux could be Leroux’s finest so far. It has a convincing, elegant bouquet that at this early juncture bears semblances to the 2008, but ramps up the intensity without compensating on delineation, with subtle notes of spice and balsam coming through. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet, candied entry. This is very pure, soft and caressing in the mouth but around the sides you can feel the tannins gently exerting their grip.

The 2011 is a very pretty, accessible Clos des Epeneaux that offers considerable near and medium-term appeal. In 2011, winemaker Benjamin Leroux used just a dollop of whole clusters, around 10%.

There is not a hair out of place on this glorious, shimmering Clos des Epeneaux. Magnifique! Drink 2015-2025+

The 2019 Volnay Les Frémiets 1er Cru was completely de-stemmed. It has a more complex, intellectual bouquet than the Village Cru as you would expect, armed with vivid blueberry, cassis and raspberry scents, blood orange emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip on the entry. I find more red fruit here compared to the Village Cru. This gains decent weight and gifts more salinity towards the chalky-textured finish. Excellent.
