    Clerc Milon

Baron de Rothschild bought Château Clerc Milon in 1970 when he recognised its quality terroir. Major renovations were finished in 2007. Since 2010, Richard Peduzzi, an interior set designer for the Louvre, has designed the label. Using a green philosophy their charming Pauillac is now some of the best in the estate's history. The 45 hectare vineyard is planted 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot and small parcels of Petit Vedot and Carménère. In fact, Clerc Milon has one of the largest plantings of Carménère in Bordeaux (some planted back in 1947). The vines average an impressive 53 years old.

    1998

    Clerc Milon 1998 (1x300cl)

    Vinous - Neal Martin (90)

The 1998 Clerc Milon has a clean and pure bouquet: perfumed, rose-petal tinged blackberry and raspberry fruit intermixed with sage, sandalwood and a hint of the estuary (mudflats and kelp). The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, well judged acidity, good structure and with plenty of tobacco and forest floor notes on the finish. There is commendable substance here, a Clerc-Milon that has aged well and will continue to give pleasure over the next decade. This is probably the best example of several that I have encountered. Tasted at the château.

    Stephen Tanzer - Vinous (89-91)

Ruby-red. Plum, currant, graphite, cedar and smoky, nutty oak on the nose. Big, round and spicy, with lovely mid-palate fat and sweetness to the enticing currant and coffee flavors. This has very good breadth, although Dhalluin finds it "vertical" today and feels it has suffered more from the recent fining than either d'Armailhac or Mouton. But there's excellent supporting material here for the wine's tannins.

    Vinous - Antonio Galloni (93)

The 2014 Clerc Milon is another juicy, fruit-driven wine from the Mouton Rothschild team. A veritable explosion of aromas and flavors makes a strong first impression. Lavender, spice, violet, mint and a array of blue and black stone fruits build into the racy, exotic finish. In 2014, the Cabernet Sauvignon is up and the Merlot is down in the blend. As it opens, the austerity recedes and sweet blackberry and loganberry fruit appear, along with a seamless delivery of cocoa bean, sage, cedar, cigar box, eucalyptus leaf. Once again you are aware that it has retained the character of Clerc Milon's early days, coming friom the natural concentration of the soils, but everything has been magnified and heightened. Clerc Milon 2018 (6x75cl)

    Decanter (96)

The progression of this property continues to be evident in the glass with a beautiful classicism, full of life and layers comprising dark spice and touches of black pepper against blueberry and cool fruits, pumped up by black chocolate and liquorice. It’s confident and clearly has a fierce quality to the tannins giving a long life ahead of it. The harvest started on September 17, one week later than Mouton because of its cooler terroir, with the blend completed by 3% Petit Verdot and 1% Carmanère.

    Clerc Milon 2019 (1x600cl)

    Wine Advocate (95)

The 2019 Clerc Milon is a real success. At more than 70%, this blend contains one of the highest proportions of Cabernet Sauvignon in the property's recent history, and the result is a wine of real nobility. Offering up aromas of violets, wild berries, licorice, loamy soil and cigar wrapper, it's full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, with notable depth at the core, lively acids and ripe, powdery tannins that assert themselves on the finish. From clay-limestone soils rather than the sandy gravels that characterize d'Armailhac, this is by some margin the more structured and serious of Mouton-Rothschild's two Pauillac stablemates.
