Ceretto

About Ceretto

Founded in the 1930s by Riccardo Ceretto, the great man’s eponymous “azienda vinicola” did not own any vineyards throughout its formative years, instead of focusing singularly on the vinification of grapes purchased from growers across the region.

Taking the youthful boldness and vision, Riccardo’s sons embarked on a project of ambitious purchasing. In the 1960s, Bruno and Marcello were highly attuned to the winds of change, which would see a deepened appreciation for terroir in all its glorious subtly and peculiarities.

The 1960s saw the brothers begin their epic Odyssey of mapping, studying and finally purchasing swathes of the greatest vineyards available. Truly avant-garde in the region, this foresight has paid dividends when one considers both the extent of Ceretto holdings and the sublime wines crafted from these individual terroirs. Neither brother left the region after their great expansion – remarkably, 2020 saw Marcello celebrate his 60th harvest amongst the vines in the heat, rain and wind shoulder to shoulder with fellow pickers.

Viniculture

In Barbaresco, the “Queen” to Barolo’s “King”, Ceretto owns and sources grapes from; Asili, famed for its silky tannins - Pajoré, a high-altitude limestone site in Treiso - Rabajà, with its dark fruits and muscular structure and Santo Stefano, arguably the single greatest Barbaresco vineyard of them all.

A model of exceptional management, the third generation of Ceretto vignerons have inherited a second Eden planted with transcendent vines in the shadow of the mountains – a testament to this philosophy, the entire range of Ceretto wines is certified organic as of 2015.

Ceretto Barbaresco 2017 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (93)

Ceretto's classic 2017 Barbaresco opens quickly and nicely in the glass. That playful accessibility is a trait that I found in many of the Barbarescos from this vintage. Compared to the two vineyard-specific expressions (Asili from Barbaresco and Bernadot from Treiso), this wine offers broad brush strokes of wild berry, spice, licorice and iron ore. That's exactly the mission of this wine: It provides an authentic portrait of a grape. Fruit represents a blend from various sites, including young vines from Asili and the lower parts of Bernadot. This wine is poised for near and medium-term drinking.

Ceretto Barolo Bricco Rocche 1999 (1x150cl)

Wine Advocate (91)

The 1999 Barolo Bricco Rocche, penetrating, tarry, and with notes of saddle leather on the nose, is rounder than the Prapo but well extracted, with an attractive density of texture and well delineated kirsch and anisette flavors. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2018.

Ceretto Barolo Brunate 2017 (6x75cl)

Jancis Robinson (17+)

La Morra. Youthful mid ruby. Full, deep nose of ripe, red fruit with the merest suggestion of oak, like a seasoning more than anything. Peppery prickle on the nose and lifted, aromatic cherry notes with a hint of nutmeg. Lively, concentrated sour-cherry palate, viscous and multi-layered. Firm, but well-behaved tannins adding grip to the cherry fruit on the long finish.

James Suckling (96)

Aromas of dried strawberries, cherries, charcoal and dried flowers follow through to a full body with tight, chewy tannins that are well integrated into the wine. It shows black truffle and berry in the aftertaste. Needs at least four years to open, so try after 2025.

Ceretto Bricco Asili Barbaresco Asili 2017 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (95)

Ceretto enjoys a long and close relationship with the Asili cru of Barbaresco. The winery has chosen to fermented these grapes apart since the early 1970s. Their 2017 Barbaresco Asili brings you close to a sense of place. Fruit comes from a 1.3-hectare site with classic Sant'Agata marl soils. Beyond the dark fruit, much of the bouquet recalls crushed stone and iron rust, with other territory-specific aromas that are characteristic of Nebbiolo in its most naked state. You feel a touch of earthiness too, thanks to those slightly looser, open-knit tannins. Shaved truffle, dried blackberry and pressed rose seal the deal.

Ceretto Bricco Asili Bernardot Barbaresco 2017 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (94+)

This is a beautiful creation from a vintage that threw quite a few challenges at vintners elsewhere in Italy and here in Piedmont. The Ceretto 2017 Barbaresco Bernadot plays up its elegance and its graceful personality. With fruit from an organic and biodynamic 4.8-hectare site in Treiso, planted high at 400 meters above sea, this pretty Barbaresco reveals very specific aromas of wild berry, light spice, licorice and iron rust. These aromas are essential components of the classic Nebbiolo playlist, as is the lightweight, silky texture of this wine. The Bernadot is natural and effortless (aged in mostly neutral oak).
