    Bouchard Père & Fils

Founded in 1731, Bouchard is one of the most long-standing and important producers in Burgundy. Since their founding, they have been assembling a collection of some of the best Cote d'Or vineyards, including 12 Grand Crus and no less than 74 1er Crus.

With more prestige and history than most, Vinous's Neal Martin has praised them in the past because their wines are "well priced compared to others". As a grower, producer and negociant, it is undeniable that Bouchard Père et Fils has played a significant role in the history of Burgundy but they have now shed their negociant tag as their new owner Artémis Domaines, who also own the likes of Château Latour and now Eisele Vineyard in Napa, have a policy of wishing only to make wines from vineyards which they own.

(estate; from En Orveaux, situated in the cooler Combe d'Orveaux): Good deep red. Wild dark fruits and game on the nose, complicated by licorice, bitter chocolate and herbs, along with a black olive quality. Sweet, pliant and fine-grained but nicely energetic too. Finishes with rather soft, harmonious tannins and lovely building length.

    Vinous (90-92)

(as Bouchard lost 90% of their fruit in En Orveaux, this year's wine was made almost entirely from purchased fruit from vines worked by the Bouchard team, located below the premier cru Vosne-Romanée Les Rouges): Good red-ruby color. Sexy, inviting scents of candied dark berries, raspberry, mocha and licorice. Then fat, plush and fine-grained but not as sweet as the nose suggests; there's even something a bit roasted here. Finishes with decent acidity and solid structure but comes across as rather disjointed today and hard to assess. Winemaker Weber says he may have used too high a percentage of whole clusters and gotten too much stem tannins as a result. (Incidentally, in 2017 Bouchard will have two different bottlings of Echézeaux, one domain and one négoce.)

The stunning floral depth to the nose is very attractive here with plenty of roses and violets, as well as ripe red cherries. Very plush, long and layered tannin weave with an expressive, fleshy and round center. There’s softness, as well as a bit of cut from the 50 per cent whole-cluster ferment. Try from 2022.

Wow. A stunning combination of perfectly ripe fruit with strawberries and plums that turn to dried flowers and spices. Some decadent notes. Full-bodied, yet so tight and formed with fruit and tannins that intertwine and spread across the palate. This represents the definition of controlled plushness. Drink in 2024 and onwards.

The 2019 Echézeaux Grand Cru is showing especially well, bursting with scents of peonies, blood orange, wild plums, cassis and exotic spices. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and expressive, it's lively and sapid, with a pretty core of fruit, bright acids and powdery tannins. This derives from domaine holdings in En Orveaux, where Weber identifies appreciable diurnal shift as a source of freshness.

A dark, rich wine, the 1985 La Romanée opens with a rich, soy-infused mélange of aromas and flavors to match its demi-glace-like richness. Brown spices, licorice and worn-in leather add further shades of nuance. The 1985 is fully mature and exquisite, especially in the way layer after layer unfolds in the glass. This is a very beautiful, mature Burgundy that has reached its peak.

This magnificent wine offers a medium-to-dark ruby color and an extraordinary nose of perfume, violets, and a myriad of red fruits. I was blown away by this wine's combination of precision, femininity, focus, and jammy, candied cherries. Traces of sweet, vanilla-infused oak grace this wine's complex and concentrated, yet lace-like flavor profile. Medium-to-full-bodied and silky-textured, this wine also possesses a long, soft, gorgeous finish that leaves the taster yearning for more. Finally, a La Romanee worthy of its name! Bravo! to Henriot, Hervet, and Prost for bringing Bouchard to such a high level of quality.

Medium red, a bit pale at the rim. Soil-inflected aromas of red fruits, potpourri spices, minerals, flowers and truffle. Plush, rich and fine-grained, showing terrific volume and breadth and a restrained sweetness to the flavors of red fruits, smoke and earth. This seamless, stylish wine boasts strong soil tones and an inviting, very smooth finish. A beauty--and perhaps deceptively accessible today.

Cask sample. Mid garnet. Pale shaded rim. Intense nose with some sweet-and-salty character. It's not especially weighty but the nose is definitely more intense than that of the premiers crus. Edgy red-fruit and tamarind character. A bold wine. Long with quite a dry finish at this point.

These vines sit at 270 meters and more or less right on the limestone slab of the old quarry. Dried cranberries and pomegranate seeds offer tingly fruit vibrancy that gives the fruit a lofty, airy quality. The tannins tenderly nudge at the sides of the palate and fade gently on the lingering finish. 2023-30

The 2016 Meursault 1er Cru Genevrières is excellent, unfurling in the glass with notes of citrus oil, crisp Anjou pear, beeswax, wet stones and dried white flowers. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and incisive, with an elegantly satiny attack, a tangy line of acidity and a tight-knit, concentrated core, concluding with a beautifully delineated finish. This is a racy, acid-driven Genevrières that will evolve beautifully in the cellar. Bouchard's holdings in Genevrières amount to some 15% of the appellation, so it's reassuring to see that they are in good hands.

The 2 hectares 65 - with one parcel mid-slope and one further up - of this Premier Cru are always the first that Fr d ric harvests in Meursault. This is a delightful Genevri res, resplendent in floral aromas. The palate shows chamomile, vanilla extract, wild flower honey, pluots and green gauges. The mid-palate has a welcoming sappiness elevated by prancing acidity. 2022-30

(5 Star Wine) The plot by the road is their first Meursault to pick. Half and half from their two plots, as there is much being replanting in the lower plot. Fine pale to mid lemon. Super refined complex bouquet. This beautifully refined quality continues on the palate, a little sandalwood note, a suggestion of verbena along with the golden yet fresh fruit. Nuances throughout but still with a refined generosity of flesh. The Bouchard Père & Fils Genevrières stands out this year! Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: October 2023.

The 2018 Meursault Les Gouttes d’Or 1er Cru comes from 0.60 hectares of vine, one of the last to be picked. It has a finely tuned bouquet of fresh pear, walnut and orange zest aromas that are commendably detailed. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity and nicely focused, revealing pretty apricot and white peach notes toward a finish that is surfeit with comeliness, though less in the way of mineralité.

Two parcels – one in the upper reaches that gives lemon zest aromatics and one in the bottom in the old quarry that contributes saltiness – combine into a generous, one-hectare holding. Complexity looms on the nose and a similar, sultry concentration follows on the palate. The whole, resolutely suave package is lifted by buoyant acidity. It is very "digestible", as the Bourguignons would say. Baked apples, plentiful sweet spice and bread crust linger on the finish. 2023-35

The 2019 Monthélie Clos Les Champs Fulliot 1er Cru comes from 0.9 hectares of vine. It was the second parcel to be picked because of its warm microclimate, yet I find more precision on the Les Duresses. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a mixture of red and black fruit and touches of dark chocolate and tar. There is more elegance and terroir expression on the Les Duresses this year.

Very pale yellow. Aromas of mirabelle, apple, spices, menthol and white truffle, lifted by a whiff of lime blossom. Juicy and rich but extremely discreet today, with ripe apple and spice flavors coming across as fully ripe but classically dry. There's an almost exotic marzipan note on the back end but strong acidity is keeping the wine under wraps. This will need at least seven or eight years of cellaring to begin to deliver on its considerable potential.

Tasted blind, Bouchard's 2015 Montrachet Grand Cru put in a fabulous showing, making my tasting note from earlier this year seem decidedly conservative. Wafting from the glass with a complex bouquet of Meyer lemon, mandarin, orange blossom, dried white flowers and toasted hazelnut, the wine is full-bodied, ample and textural, with an incredibly elegant, pure and precise profile. Above all, it's beautifully balanced, with the ineffable sense of completeness that distinguishes Montrachet at its best.

The 2017 Montrachet Grand Cru has a slight reduction on the nose, although it is nothing to get too worried about. I think it has exceptional mineralité covered up by its youth. The medium-bodied palate is taut, fresh and quite saline, with a fine bead of acidity and some vanilla-y oak toward the very saline finish, though that will be eaten with bottle age. There is outstanding precision on the aftertaste, and that seems to be accentuated with aeration. I gave this a tepid reaction from barrel, but here in bottle, it received my highest score out of over two hundred 2017s. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Savigny-lès-Beaune.

The 2020 Meursault Les Gouttes d’Or 1er Cru has a more complex bouquet than the Bouchères with lanolin, dried honey and hazelnut aromas that unfold in the glass. The palate is well balanced with a zest opening: pink grapefruit, orange zest and a touch of spice, this has good weight on the finish. Fine.

The 2019 Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières is very promising, delivering notes of citrus oil, white flowers, mandarin, fresh bread and struck match. Medium to full-bodied, racy and chiseled, it's bright and mineral, with a tight, tangy profile that's defined by the site more than the vintage.

    Vinous (86-88)

Naughty heavy bottle. Manages to dance on the head of a pin: an extra dimension of weight and density without being heavy, hot or flat. White peach, hazelnut, citrus and stones. Great length.
