About Clos Mogador
Found in the village of Gratallops, deep in the heart of the Priorat hills, Clos Mogador was established in the 1970s by the pioneering René Barbier. Its steeply terraced vineyards are perched at a lofty 750 meter altitude, planted with extremely low-yielding vines up to 100 years old. A vast natural amphitheatre of crumbling slate soils, the result of this incredible and rugged terroir is wines which combine power, elegance, complexity and harmonious flavour profiles.
Viniculture
The approach to the land here is a very natural one – mostly organic methods are used - although the estate is not formally certified as such. Interestingly, Barbier uses an olive press instead of a normal wine press to extract the juice - if it works, it works! This gentle but firm extraction results in an even more intense wine from what are already highly concentrated grapes from such low yields.
Clos Mogador is blend of 45% Garnacha, 29% Carinyena, 16% Syrah and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. A careful approach to oak maturation is taken towards Clos Mogador, with 70% in 2,000 litre oak vats and 30% in 300 litre oak barriques for a period of 18 months. In 2018, a mere 4,500 cases were produced for the entire world.

Wine Advocate (96)All the wines go through malolactic in barrel, including the white 2022 Nelin, a blend that has been changing over time. In 2022, it was produced exclusively with local varieties, Garnacha Blanca, Macabeu, Xarel·lo, Cariñena Blanca, Picapoll Blanco, Trepat Blanco, PX and Escanyavelles from four small organic vineyards. The juice from the pressing of the full clusters fermented with indigenous yeasts in 1,200-liter oak foudres, with a slow and long fermentation that takes between three and nine months. It matured in foudre for one year and then was transferred to stainless steel for six to eight more months. Despite the dry conditions and the heat waves, it came after the 2021, and the vines had enough reserves, so the wines are fresher than expected. It's a Mediterranean blend with 14% alcohol and 5.3 grams of acidity, clean and harmonious. The north-facing plots behaved very well, and the varieties can take the conditions without a problem, so the wine doesn't seem affected at all. In fact, it's quite fresh, medium-bodied and very tasty, serious and characterful, a triumph over the extreme conditions of the year. It's a white with aging potential. 9,000 bottles were filled in April 2024. |

Wine Advocate (97)The cooler and more austere 2014 Espectacle del Montsant could have some similarities with 2008. It has beautiful floral aromas and hints of orange peel and wet stones. It has a serious, balanced and austere palate, a closer expression of Espectacle, with contained ripeness and an earthier, more mineral finish. It's very different from 2015, which is possibly a more classical expression of the vineyard, while this 2014 is quite unique and different. But I like this austerity very much. Around 6,000 bottles were filled from one 4,500-liter oak foudre. It was bottled in May 2016. |

This has a forward personality—open, expressive and showy in the nose—from a typically warm and ripe year that resulted in a voluptuous and hedonistic Espectacle that's easy to like. It's rounder and lusher than the 2014 I had next to it, and the two vintages showed very different. The palate is also gentler, with integrated acidity and a soft mouthfeel. It's a powerful Garnacha that feels light on its feet but with great inner strength, refined tannins and great acidity. There is no oak, extraction or excess ripeness whatsoever, but the label says the wine is 16% alcohol! It has structure, freshness and that citrus touch that supports the alcohol, and the wine comes through as really balanced. This is a unique wine, always with the aromatic signature of this north-facing vineyard and the limestone soils that provide those chalky tannins and a dry, tasty, almost salty finish. 6,500 bottles produced. |

It's an atypical year: It has a gentle profile, and the wines are not as concentrated as those from 2013 (the last rainy year before 2018)—they are more elegant and nuanced. This should develop beautifully in bottle. 27,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2020. |
