Aubert
About Aubert
Raised in the Napa County city of St.Helena, proprietor and eponymous founder Mark Aubert is, like more than a few of the world’s great vignerons, a person with farming and terroir in his blood. The son of fruit farmers, Aubert’s sole foray out of his native Napa was to university, upon completion of which he eagerly returned to commence what has been an extraordinary life in wine. Having spent a fruitful career as winemaker at the famous Colgin Cellars as well as consulting for Sloan, FUTO and Bryant Family, Mark and his wife Teresa Aubert founded their namesake winery officially in 1999, releasing their first vintage in 2000.
In the handful of years through which they have been operating, the husband and wife team have crafted what are, quite simply, some of the finest Chardonnays ever made in Napa – no small claim by any means. A swathe of perfect 100 point scores from the world’s leading critics tell only part of the story – it is the striking depth, power and purity which have astonished oenophiles over the past vintages.

One of the highlights in this range, the 2017 Chardonnay Lauren Vineyard is also the most gracious and lifted of Mark Aubert's Chardonnays. Lemon peel, white flowers, mint, chalk and white pepper give the wine lift and perfume. Delicate, understated and classy to the core, the Lauren has it all. The 2017 is a stunning wine. It's as simple as that. Don't miss it.Inc. TAX€407.95 -

One of the more explosive wines in the range, the 2012 Chardonnay Sugar Shack hits the palate with tons of depth and pure body. Readers who can put the wine aside for a few years should do so, as today the structure and intensity of the fruit are both incredibly intense. The style is rich, tropical, honeyed and voluptuous to the core. Sugar Shack emerges from a site in Rutherford, just outside St. Helena, planted by David Abreu with a Montrachet clone. This is the same wine that was labeled as Napa Valley in 2011. The vines are now seven years old. There is every reason to think the best lies ahead.Inc. TAX€261.55 -

Here in just its third vintage, 2014 Chardonnay Sugar Shack is rich and deeply colored. Dried apricot, hazelnut, spice, chamomile, baked apple tart, candied orange peel and lightly honeyed noted are all signatures of a wine that is peaking. There's still plenty of density, so this may hang on for some time. All of the textural richness and oiliness of Sugar Shack is very much in evidence.Inc. TAX€213.55 -

The 2019 Chardonnay Sugar Shack balances the richness of this site with the cool nature of the year. Rich, oily and viscous, yet also incredibly gracious the Sugar Shack is arrestingly beautiful. Lemon confit, dried herbs, crushed rocks and tangerine oil open in the glass, but it is the wine's balance that carries the day.Inc. TAX€356.08 -

The 2021 Chardonnay Sugar Shack is a classic Mark Aubert wine. Creamy and ample in feel, the 2021 is super-expressive right out of the gate. Soft, silky contours frame lemon confit, white flowers, tangerine oil and lightly honeyed overtones that appear with aeration. All the elements are so well balanced. The Sugar Shack is one of the more immediate wines in this range and will drink well pretty much upon release.Inc. TAX€196.75 -

The 2021 Chardonnay Powder House was tasted as a tank sample, due to be bottled in December 2022. It soars out of the glass with a gorgeous perfume of peach cobbler, apple blossoms, and honeydew melon, leading to suggestions of persimmons, quince, spice cake, and almond croissant with a waft of honeycomb. Full-bodied, the palate is so fragrant and graceful, with a fantastic seamlessness and silken texture, leading to amazing length and depth on the finish of this gorgeous wine. This vineyard, on Goldridge soils near downtown Forestville, was planted in 2013. There are basically 2 clones, Hyde and Mt Eden, on 420 A & 114 rootstocks, and the row direction is due north.Inc. The 2019 Pinot Noir UV Vineyard is incredibly delicate and refined. Freshly cut flowers, mint, sage, dried rose petals and blood orange infuse the UV with notable brightness and energy to match its soft curves. In the glass, the UV is nuanced and so full of complexity. The 2019 UV Pinot is one of the most elegant Pinots I have tasted from Mark Aubert. I would cellar the 2019 for a few years as it has just been bottled.Inc. TAX€209.95 -

The 2019 Pinot Noir UV-SL Vineyard brings together some of the aromatic breadth of the UV with the textural resonance of the CIX. Rose petal, lavender, spice, menthol, kirsch and dark cherry fruit build in a Pinot that balances density, power and energy. Rich and layered in the glass, with striking inner perfume, the UV-SL is superb.Inc. TAX€209.95 -

A wine of impact and power, the 2015 Chardonnay UV-SL Vineyard captures the pure intensity and concentration of the year. Yields were down by a whopping 40%, and yet all the elements are impeccably balanced. Petrol, graphite and savory herbs open up with time in the glass, but the 2015 is naturally quite reticent and in need of time in bottle.Inc. TAX€779.69
