On this night, it was the 2006 vintage that called to me from the cellar. Il Poggio is typically a blend of 95% Sangiovese and 5% Canaiolo Nero and Colorino, but what makes the 2006 unique was that it was the first year that Castello di Monsanto decided to stop using barrique and began refining the wine in 500-liter tonneaux, part new and part second pass. It’s also worth mentioning that, because of Il Poggio’s amazing ability to mature over the course of decades, this night was the first time that I decided to open a bottle of the 2006 since tasting it upon release - and I sure am glad that I did.2006 Castello di Monsanto Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggio - You’d never guess that the 2006 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggio is fourteen years old, with a brilliant deep ruby color in the glass. Its bouquet starts out airy and fresh, as white smoke blows off to reveal bassier tones of black cherry, a dusting of cinnamon, black tea, saddle leather and pine shavings. This is pure elegance on the palate, with silken textures that usher in a polished wave of dark red fruits and minerals, with teeming acids and hints of fine tannins that build to create a tug-of-war of tension toward the close. A tart twang of woodland berries and hints of savory herbs linger throughout the lightly structured finish. The bouquet is singular both in terms of its varietal purity and its aromatic reach. In many respects, this wine comes closest to the legendary 1990 Le Pergole Torte Riserva, an edition made only once in Montevertine's history. The enormity of this wine cannot be exaggerated: Dark fruit, chocolate and spice make for a rich and opulent first impression. A real rockstar, the 2004 Le Pergole Torte is hard to taste in this vertical, as it is incredibly young and primary. The signature are there - expressive, soaring aromatics, silky tannins and superb persistence - but the 2004 needs at least a few years to show the full breadth of its personality. As always, the 2004 is lithe, delicate and gracious, with stunning harmony and purity. Today, the 2004 comes across as a slightly more refined version of the 2001, a vintage with which it has quite a bit in common. A few more years of cellaring will only help. One of the unforgettable standouts in this historic retrospective, the 2007 Le Pergole Torte is an astonishing achievement. The wine offers soaring intensity and an enduring sense of balance and power. It has also entered a stunning phase in its lifeline, yet it still possesses that inner energy and youthfulness that ensures an even longer aging trajectory ahead. The bouquet is singular both in terms of its varietal purity and its aromatic reach. In many respects, this wine comes closest to the legendary 1990 Le Pergole Torte Riserva, an edition made only once in Montevertine's history. Indeed, this wine may have an upper leg on that wine given that inner youthfulness I mentioned above. The bouquet emits dark fruit and hints of exotic spice. All of these aromatic elements build in momentum and power to bring the wine a big notch forward in terms of complexity and personality. It is oversized in ambition, personality and purity but not in terms of mass or volume. Indeed, the wine is streamlined, tightly knit and zippy. It offers a complete picture of Sangiovese, with the purity of fruit flavors, the balsam herb and the crisp acidity that this Tuscan grape is celebrated for. Dried violets and wild roses also appear in supporting roles. The mouthfeel is characterized by a subtle sense of fullness and volume.
