France - All Red Wines

France stands as the epitome of excellence when it comes to crafting red wines that showcase the diversity of terroirs, grape varieties, and winemaking traditions.

In Bordeaux, the renowned Left Bank vineyards of Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Haut-Brion epitomize the artistry of winemaking. These prestigious estates craft red wines that blend Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec, resulting in wines of depth, structure, and complexity. The wines from the Right Bank, such as those from Pétrus, Château Ausone, and Château Cheval Blanc, offer elegance, refinement, and a focus on Merlot as the dominant grape variety.

In Burgundy, the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune regions are home to iconic vineyards like Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, and Domaine Armand Rousseau. These vineyards produce world-renowned Pinot Noir wines that showcase finesse, complexity, and a captivating expression of their unique terroirs.

The Rhône Valley boasts appellations such as Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, and Châteauneuf-du-Pape. In Hermitage, producers like Jean-Louis Chave and Domaine Jean-Louis Grippat craft powerful and age-worthy Syrah-based wines with immense structure and complexity. Côte-Rôtie is known for its elegant and perfumed Syrah wines, while Châteauneuf-du-Pape combines a blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre to create bold and full-bodied wines.

Moving to the Loire Valley, the vineyards of Chinon and Saumur-Champigny shine with exceptional Cabernet Franc wines. Producers such as Charles Joguet and Domaine Guiberteau showcase the region's ability to craft wines of finesse, with notes of red fruits, spice, and a characteristic herbal undertone.

Finally, in the south, the Languedoc-Roussillon region is celebrated for its bold and robust red wines. Vineyards like Mas de Daumas Gassac and Domaine Gauby produce powerful and expressive wines that highlight the region's warm climate and diverse terroirs.

Vinous (96+)

Deep red with ruby tones. Flamboyantly ripe aromas of black fruits, blood orange, peony and espresso. Huge yet weightless, saturating every square millimeter of the mouth with very ripe dark fruits, minerals and spices. This plush, sweet, extremely unevolved wine is almost monolithic today but the explosive, palate-staining finish suggests that it has a slow and glorious evolution ahead of it. The fruit here was picked with potential alcohol of 13.7%, the same as in 2005.

Palish medium red. Good lift to the aromas of red fruits, smoke, cinnamon and fresh herbs. A medium-bodied wine with good smoky intensity to its flavors of redcurrant, iron and spices. There's a coolness to this wine but also an enticing lingering perfume, and the tannins are fine-grained.

Good deep red with ruby highlights. Aromas of black raspberry, violet and licorice are purer and more precise than those of the young 2007. Then sweet and concentrated in the mouth, with a tangy freshness to the pristine dark berry and spice flavors. Youthfully closed in on itself, but already showing lovely fruit. This reminded me of a finer version of the 2007 Griottes. Finishes with building tannins. Became more expressive with air, but this really calls for a decade of cellaring.

Tasted at Bordeaux Index's annual 10-Year On tasting in London. The 2006 Château L'Eglise-Clinet has a killer bouquet: intense black and red fruit, crushed rose petals, a touch of potters wheel and dried herbs. It possesses one of the classiest aromatics in the Pomerol appellation. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, dense dark berry fruit laced with black tea, dried herbs and a touch of juniper, gently building towards a lightly spiced, dense finish with impressive substance. This is a long-term Pomerol that needs another 3-4 years in bottle. Tasted January 2016.

At present, this estate is the reference point for high quality wines from Lalande de Pomerol. The basic cuvee from proprietor Hubert de Bouard and his wife Corinne, the 2006 La Fleur de Bouard is composed of 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Sensationally rich, with abundant quantities of blue and black fruits, spring flowers, graphite, licorice, and hints of espresso roast as well as toasty oak, it is supple enough to be drunk now, or cellared for a decade.

This limited-production, 100% Merlot cuvee is a beauty. Sweet, almost caramelized black cherry fruit and dark mountain berries intermixed with forest floor and a touch of subtle oak characterize this full-bodied, rich, concentrated, superb Pomerol that should hit its stride in 3-4 years and last for two decades. Unfortunately, the production is only about 1,500 cases.

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (89-92)

Medium red-ruby. Utterly captivating aromas of red fruits and iron complicated by an exotic white fruit note that reminded me of viognier. Suave and silky but not at all overly sweet, with a lovely subtle perfumed character in the mouth. Very complex and distinctive 100%-merlot wine in an elegant style. Finishes long and perfumed. This property, located between Le Pin and Trotanoy, was recently purchased by Catherine Pere-Verge, owner of Le Gay. The fruit was destemmed by hand, and the must went directly into barrel for fermentation, with Michel Rolland responsible for the winemaking.

As so often with Lafite, it is power that marks this wine. That, and density of texture. Not an outstanding vintage overall for Bordeaux, 2006 had the potential to be very good. Things got off to a pretty impressive start in Pauillac this year, and then it all went a bit pear-shaped toward the end with a cool, rainy August and late September. Vineyard diligence and a take-no-prisoners attitude on the sorting table were the keys to relative success here. While it is clear Latour had their work cut out for them with this 2006 release, they managed to produce an incredibly impressive grand vin, which is drinking beautifully now yet should cellar gracefully over the next 20+ years. The 2006 Latour was just released this year and is composed of 91.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7.5% Merlot, 0.5% Cabernet Franc and 0.5% Petit Verdot. It has a medium to deep garnet-purple color and lovely open nose with florals and red fruit aromas. The palate is medium-bodied, elegant and minerally with a compelling iron ore character and great length. 10,000 cases were produced (representing 38% of production).

Good deep red. Black raspberry, sassafras, road tar and spicy oak on the nose. Sweet berry fruit shows an almost liqueur-like creaminess, but a peppery element and good underlying minerality lend grip to the finish, which features a fine dusting of tannins and nice cedary persistence. An excellent second wine.

Wine Spectator (95-100)

Starts off slow, then cascades like a waterfall. Full and superlong, this is structured and racy. Tight and in reserve. A classic beauty for the vintage. Score range: 95-100

Wine Spectator (94)

There's a great dark color to this, with intense aromas of cedar, wood, new leather and crushed blackberry. Full-bodied, with loads of fruit and a firm, powerful palate. Long and mouthpuckering. A muscular baby. Best after 2015. 18,750 cases made.

Wine Advocate (95)

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (89)

Good deep red. Black raspberry, sassafras, road tar and spicy oak on the nose. Sweet berry fruit shows an almost liqueur-like creaminess, but a peppery element and good underlying minerality lend grip to the finish, which features a fine dusting of tannins and nice cedary persistence. An excellent second wine.

Decanter (98)

Layer upon layer of complexity, texture and tannin continue to delight and surprise the palate. There’s silk and satin, subtle roasted coffee beans, sweet berry fruits, bracken, toffee and soft leather. Full of finesse and perfume; you would be thrilled to open a bottle now. But it’s also only just beginning to reveal its heart.
