France - All Red Wines

France stands as the epitome of excellence when it comes to crafting red wines that showcase the diversity of terroirs, grape varieties, and winemaking traditions.

In Bordeaux, the renowned Left Bank vineyards of Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Haut-Brion epitomize the artistry of winemaking. These prestigious estates craft red wines that blend Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec, resulting in wines of depth, structure, and complexity. The wines from the Right Bank, such as those from Pétrus, Château Ausone, and Château Cheval Blanc, offer elegance, refinement, and a focus on Merlot as the dominant grape variety.

In Burgundy, the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune regions are home to iconic vineyards like Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, and Domaine Armand Rousseau. These vineyards produce world-renowned Pinot Noir wines that showcase finesse, complexity, and a captivating expression of their unique terroirs.

The Rhône Valley boasts appellations such as Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, and Châteauneuf-du-Pape. In Hermitage, producers like Jean-Louis Chave and Domaine Jean-Louis Grippat craft powerful and age-worthy Syrah-based wines with immense structure and complexity. Côte-Rôtie is known for its elegant and perfumed Syrah wines, while Châteauneuf-du-Pape combines a blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre to create bold and full-bodied wines.

Moving to the Loire Valley, the vineyards of Chinon and Saumur-Champigny shine with exceptional Cabernet Franc wines. Producers such as Charles Joguet and Domaine Guiberteau showcase the region's ability to craft wines of finesse, with notes of red fruits, spice, and a characteristic herbal undertone.

Finally, in the south, the Languedoc-Roussillon region is celebrated for its bold and robust red wines. Vineyards like Mas de Daumas Gassac and Domaine Gauby produce powerful and expressive wines that highlight the region's warm climate and diverse terroirs.

The 2007 Hermitage les Bessards is a forward, sexy wine that has considerable charm in its darker fruits, smoked wood, bacon fat and mineral-laced personality. Full-bodied, fleshy, layered and sweetly fruited, drink it while you wait on the 2009 and 2010 to come around.

Good deep red. Enticing aromas of raspberry, mocha and game. Sweet, lush and stuffed with flavor, and yet this also boasts excellent definition and cut. The chewy dark fruit and game flavors convey a strong impression of terroir Finishes pure and long, with dusty tannins and excellent grip for the vintage. But the '07 Champeaux seems even riper.

Tasted at BI Wine & Spirits' 10-Years-On tasting, the 2007 Domaine de Chevalier was tasted from two bottles. I returned the first as it felt a little volatile on the nose, but the second was as it should be. This has a very refined bouquet with scents of warm gravel and black olives permeating the dark berry fruit, all very well defined and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, very fresh and generous in the mouth with superb mineralité and tension towards the tertiary finish. What a lovely Domaine de Chevalier—à point—but with the substance to suggest that it will not go downhill in any hurry. Tasted February 2017.

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (94)

Opaque purple. Captivating aromas of boysenberry, dark cherry, pepper, spices, cocoa powder and smoky minerality. Then intense and penetrating in the mouth, with brilliantly fresh dark berry and kirsch flavors lifted by notes of cinnamon and star anise. Finishes pungent and impressively long, with a palate-saturating whiplash of dark berry and spice flavors. This wine calls for at least decade of aging. Only 900 bottles were slated to be sent to the American importer.

Jancis Robinson (18.5)

Gentle spice, hint of cigar box and delicate oak spice aromas and something perfumed and almost exotic, a little like sandalwood, opening up to spiced red fruit and candied orange-peel freshness. Already so multi-faceted and open on the nose. Very tangy and finely spiced on the palate too. There’s density and elegant tannic structure but so well dressed in light but fine fruit that you barely see the framework. Fine spicy grip on the long fresh finish. Silky, scented, gorgeous. The most approachable of the 2007 grands crus tasted alongside.

The Domaine de La Romanee-Conti 2007 Grands-Echezeaux exhibits a rich, roasted meat dimension to parallel its sweetness of ripe red raspberry and cherry, with hints of vanilla and caramel adding a confectionary hint, and a flatteringly plush, creamy texture. Cardamom, soy, and ginger add pungency and savor to a long, layered finishing melange. Follow it for at least 10-12 years.

The 2008 La Tache amply illustrates why this monopole is the darling among most of those lucky enough to regularly taste or collect the wines of the Domaine de La Romanee-Conti. Hints of mocha, vanilla, maraschino, and almond paste lend a confectionary note to generously rich cassis and raspberry, while Latakia tobacco, peat, clove, black pepper, star anise, and cumin contribute commune-typical Vosne-Romanee personality in spades. The high-toned, sweet themes continue inner mouth, with intimation of heliotrope, rowan, and lily perfume, while the wine’s smoky, spicy elements seem to descend into a low-register undertone of roasted red meats and forest floor. As this opens to the air, a subtly sweet-saline suggestion of lobster shell reduction adds richness and succulence. Strikingly creamy in feel, this La Tache nevertheless possessed a fresh berry edge that helps convey vibrancy to a finish that practically glows in your mouth, offering another of those Burgundian paradoxes of light and dark. Here, de Villaine’s case for long-term potential is easily made, and I expect this will richly reward at least 15-20 years of attention.

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (93+)

Bright medium red. Pungent aromas of wild strawberry, minerals, spices and pepper. Not a fat wine but classy and suave, with terrific peppery, minerally lift in the middle palate. With aeration, this classically dry wine showed a stronger soil component and mounting power. Finishes with superb breadth and an impression of weightlessness. I might have initially mistaken this for the RSV-and vice-versa-had I tasted these blind, but this is ultimately the more powerful wine.

Crafted by the meticulous Ronchia family, this exquisite blend integrates Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah, and Cinsault grapes, epitomising the wine's historic Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. The grapes are harvested by hand from vines aged up to 100 years old, fermented in stainless steel, and matured in oak foudres to uphold the integrity of the vintage's complex structure. Showing better than it did from cask, this soft, generous, dark ruby/purple-tinged 2007 exhibits sweet black currant fruit intermixed with cedar, roasted herbs, and subtle smoke. Round, hedonistic, and already complex, this blend of 73.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 26.5% Merlot should drink well for 12-15 years.

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (91-94)

Bright, deep red. Aromas of raspberry liqueur, blueberry, menthol and musky herbs. Rich, chewy and dry; comes across as quite austere after the last couple of grand crus. But then Jeremy Seysses finds this quality to be reassuring in the context of 2007. I'm drawn to austerity in this vintage, he told me, adding that he plans to lay down magnums of this wine in his personal cellar, along with the Clos de la Roche and Echezeaux. Finishes with dusty tannins and excellent thrust.

Saturated dark red. Knockout nose combines liqueur-like raspberry, coffee, smoke, licorice and brown spices. Tightly coiled and powerful, conveying an impression of energy but at the same time sweeter and more harmonious than the Mazis. Perhaps best today on the extremely long, palate-staining finish, which features an almost electric impression of precision and complex suggestions of minerals, coffee and spices. Hervet describes 2007 as a vintage that offers great transparency of terroir, and this wine could serve as Exhibit A.

Good bright ruby-red. Sexy nose offers black cherry, blackberry and a gamey nuance. Sweet and juicy, with an attractive layered texture and very good definition to the flavors of cherry, mocha and leather. Cooling acids contribute to the impression of shape and structure. Finishes juicy and long, if a bit youthfully brutal today. (A second sample was more pliant in the middle palate, and broader and sweeter on the back end.) This high-altitude, limestone-rich site, always picked late, is exactly the type of property that was able to take advantage of the favorable September and October weather in 2007.

Exhibit the distinctive characteristics of France's Rhône Valley with Domaine Saint Gayan Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2007. The resulting wine showcases a deep, ruby hue, with rich flavours of red and dark fruits enhanced by a seamless blend of spices, earthiness and well-integrated tannins. The Domaine Saint Gayan Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2007 is a proper tribute to its region, offering immaculate balance and an extended finish, fabulous for pairing with game or red meat dishes. Add this impeccable vintage to your refined wine collection and appreciate the unique traits it offers as it continues to evolve over the next decade.

Wine Advocate (90)

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (93-95)

Saturated dark red. Knockout nose combines liqueur-like raspberry, coffee, smoke, licorice and brown spices. Tightly coiled and powerful, conveying an impression of energy but at the same time sweeter and more harmonious than the Mazis. Perhaps best today on the extremely long, palate-staining finish, which features an almost electric impression of precision and complex suggestions of minerals, coffee and spices. Hervet describes 2007 as a vintage that offers great transparency of terroir, and this wine could serve as Exhibit A.

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (89-92)

Vinous (93)

Bright red. Black raspberry and floral aromas are complemented by Asian spices, anise and white pepper. Racy, finely etched red berry and cherry flavors stain the palate and become deeper and sweeter with air. Shows no rough edges and finishes with superb focus and sweet, sappy persistence. This puts most Chateauneufs in the shade.
