France - All Red Wines
France stands as the epitome of excellence when it comes to crafting red wines that showcase the diversity of terroirs, grape varieties, and winemaking traditions.
In Bordeaux, the renowned Left Bank vineyards of Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Haut-Brion epitomize the artistry of winemaking. These prestigious estates craft red wines that blend Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec, resulting in wines of depth, structure, and complexity. The wines from the Right Bank, such as those from Pétrus, Château Ausone, and Château Cheval Blanc, offer elegance, refinement, and a focus on Merlot as the dominant grape variety.
In Burgundy, the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune regions are home to iconic vineyards like Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, and Domaine Armand Rousseau. These vineyards produce world-renowned Pinot Noir wines that showcase finesse, complexity, and a captivating expression of their unique terroirs.
The Rhône Valley boasts appellations such as Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, and Châteauneuf-du-Pape. In Hermitage, producers like Jean-Louis Chave and Domaine Jean-Louis Grippat craft powerful and age-worthy Syrah-based wines with immense structure and complexity. Côte-Rôtie is known for its elegant and perfumed Syrah wines, while Châteauneuf-du-Pape combines a blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre to create bold and full-bodied wines.
Moving to the Loire Valley, the vineyards of Chinon and Saumur-Champigny shine with exceptional Cabernet Franc wines. Producers such as Charles Joguet and Domaine Guiberteau showcase the region's ability to craft wines of finesse, with notes of red fruits, spice, and a characteristic herbal undertone.
Finally, in the south, the Languedoc-Roussillon region is celebrated for its bold and robust red wines. Vineyards like Mas de Daumas Gassac and Domaine Gauby produce powerful and expressive wines that highlight the region's warm climate and diverse terroirs.

The 2016 Dassault is a gorgeous wine. Plush, deep and beautifully resonant, the 2016 has so much to offer. A whole range of raspberry jam, cedar, espresso and white chocolate notes develop as this plush, modern Saint-Émilion shows everything it's got. I would give the 2016 a few years in bottle to allow the tannins to soften. There is so much to like and admire here. Tasted two times.Inc. TAX€383.94 -
Vinous (91-93)
The 2017 Beaune Grèves 1er Cru has a harmonious bouquet with ample ripe Morello cherry, strawberry and raspberry preserve aromas, a hint of vanilla in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, a little more compact than the Les Perrières and with more girth towards the grippy finish. As such, give this more bottle age because it is a fine Beaune Grèves.Inc. TAX€614.93 -
Vinous (93-96)
The 2012 Corton Clos du Roi is a model of delicacy and finesse. The 2013 Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru, which was two-third whole-cluster fruit, has a well-defined bouquet with very fine mineralité. These aromatics just speak of class. The palate is medium-bodied with fresh and supple tannins, finely-tuned acidity and commendable precision on the finish. This is a refined and sophisticated Clos du Roi in the making and one of de Montille's standouts of 2013.Inc. TAX€1,177.82 -

Medium red. Aromas of black cherry, minerals and graphite. Sweet and harmonious, with impressive vivacity and purity of flavor for '99. Strong mineral and graphite notes contribute complexity. Wine Advocate (91)
Another sleeper of the vintage for this property that has been doing impressive work over recent vintages, the 2004 (a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot) displays a dark ruby/purple color along with classic aromas of cedar, creme de cassis, earth, spice, and wood. Medium to full-bodied, ripe, long, and impressively endowed, it should be at its peak between 2010-2022.Inc. TAX€607.73 -
James Suckling (94-95)
This is a really pretty Duhart and fans out nicely on the palate with medium soft tannins that are polished. Gorgeous young wine. 81% cabernet sauvignon and 19% merlot.Inc. TAX€637.99 -
Vinous (93-95)
The 2013 Echézeaux is one of the most open, expressive wines in the range today. Silky tannins and a pliant, resonant mid-palate convey an impression of suppleness that is unusual, even for Echézeaux. That theme continues through to a beautifully sculpted, generous finish. I expect the 2013 will drink well relatively early for a Grand Cru.Inc. TAX€3,839.94 -

Wine Advocate (97)
The Dujac 2006 Romanee St.-Vivant is extraordinarily perfumed by black raspberry, lily, honeysuckle, narcissus, ginger, star anise, and fennel pollen, all of which are complimented rather than contradicted by a bit of sweet new woodiness. (Seysses says his toasting instructions for these barrels – there were only two of Romanee St.-Vivant this year; half a barrique less than in 2005 – were misunderstood, with the result that it wasn't quite deep enough and there is a bit of superficial coconut aroma, about which, he adds, I am not concerned long-term.) A musky sense of liquid floral perfume and liqueur-like essence of spiced black fruits and Pinot carnality inform the rich, dense palate of this exceptional, almost endlessly lingering elixir which simultaneously marries near-implosive concentration with animation, elegance, and sheer refreshment. You could – perhaps, should, were you to be lucky enough to acquire some – spend an entire evening savoring this, not to mention the next 12-15 years smugly savoring the knowledge that some exists in your cellar.Inc. TAX€14,306.95 -
Vinous (97)
The 2009 Romanée St. Vivant has come together beautifully since I tasted it last year. Sweet red cherries, roses, mint and orange peel float on the palate in this sensual, utterly beguiling wine. This is an effortless, gracious Burgundy of the highest level. The 2009 character comes through in spades, but there is something about the Romanée St. Vivant that transcends vintage. Call it the utmost in classicism. The Romanée St. Vivant can be slow out of the gate, but once it starts blossoming in bottle it is truly majestic. Readers lucky enough to find the 2009 are in for a treat.Inc. TAX€18,008.93 -
Vinous (95+)
Good bright, full red. Aromas of crushed red berries, eucalyptus and blood orange, given even more punch by a suggestion of citrus peel. Pungent and penetrating in the mouth, with the crushed-grape character giving this very pure, focused wine an extremely primary quality today. With its rather powerful tannic spine, this is an infant. I would not be surprised if it needed 15 years to approach its plane of peak maturity.Inc. TAX€19,361.92 -
Vinous (96-98)
The 2019 Romanée Saint-Vivant Grand Cru is glorious, regal on the nose with black cherries, bilberry, light oyster shell and that has exquisite delineation. This has more intensity than the Chambertin. The palate is beguiling in terms of balance, utterly harmonious with filigree tannins. This is extremely pure and long, lightly spiced towards the finish and an extraordinarily long on the aftertaste. Utterly sublime and sensual, just as a Romanée-Saint-Vivant ought to be.Inc. TAX€25,037.94 -
Vinous (92+)
Bright medium red. Rather cool nose offers scents of black cherry, dark raspberry, menthol, licorice, black pepper, caraway seed, crushed herbs and spices. Surprisingly smooth and fine-grained on entry, with its almost velvety texture enlivened by notes of fresh herbs, licorice, dried flowers and medicinal black cherry. Offers an attractive combination of subtle sweetness and salinity, conveying clear if subtle soil tones; more black fruits than red. Ultimately a midweight for this bottling. This may not possess quite the density or sweetness to buffer its dusty tannins, at least in the early going, but it's very young and still imploded, and displays considerable power for the vintage. From a very late harvest, beginning on October 2. (13.15% alcohol; 3.4 pH; 3.7 g/l acidity; 41 h/h yield)Inc. TAX€1,025.42 -
James Suckling (97)
I'm amazed! This is extremely fresh with orange zest and smoky notes, as well as intense cherry aromas. With its stunning concentration and vitality, this could wake the dead! A great and dynamic expression of this unique terroir that could be drunk now, but it also has a huge future ahead of it.Inc. TAX€1,382.93 -
Jancis Robinson (18)
Barrel sample. Mid crimson, a little lighter in colour than the Grands Échezeaux. Brighter fruited and a little more floral, with a stony/mineral elegance as well as that pure and perfumed dark-red fruit. A youthful beauty.Inc. TAX€1,103.33 -
Vinous (90+)
Bright medium red. Subdued, slightly medicinal scents of cherry, raspberry, licorice, black pepper and wild herbs, complicated by spices and a hint of leather. Tight and taut, with rather ungiving cherry, menthol and crushed stone flavors in need of time in bottle to relax and unwind. Not a fleshy or sweet style--in fact a bit dusty today--and in need of patience. Finishes with slightly dry-edged, firm tannins and lingering spiciness. Will this rather cool premier cru expand with time in the cellar?Inc. TAX€757.82 -
James Suckling (94)
This is very stretched and compressed in texture with polished tannins that pull the pretty fruit character through the wine with blueberry, cedar and light tobacco undertones. Long and pretty. Drink in 2020.Inc. TAX€850.22 -
James Suckling (100)
A mesmerizing nose here with flowers such as violets and red roses, then shows cherries and currants with some mineral and black truffles. Full-bodied yet so refined and harmonized with ultra-fine tannins that run the length of the wine. Flavors of perfectly ripened fruit (al dente) with a hazelnut character that comes from the seeds. Incredibly transparent young red. Breathtaking. 37% merlot, 32% cabernet franc and 31% cabernet sauvignon. Drink after 2028 and onwards. Magnificent.Inc. TAX€1,198.13 -

Jane Anson Inside Bordeaux (98)
Fragrant floral aromatics straight off the bat, peony and violet, and a vibrant juiciness that travels through the palate. Savoury dark fruit character, with flint and textural interest, full of Figeac finesse. 130th vintage of the Manoncourt family at Figeac, and the first vintage where they knew they were Premier Grand Cru Classé A from the start of the season, as it was announced in September 2022. 130mm of rain lower than average over the growing season here, allowing a long slow harvest from September 6 to October 5, 45hl/h yield.Expected Price Range€945 - €1,122 -
Vinous (91-94)
Dark red with ruby highlights. Aromas of blueberry, raspberry, leather and game, lifted by a crushed stone element. In a supple, ripe style, but with terrific sappy intensity and lift to the crushed raspberry and mineral flavors. The tannins are fine-grained and sweet. A stunning example of this calcaire-rich premier cru.Inc. TAX€1,778.93 -
Tim Atkin MW (97)
Nicole is thrilled that La Grande Rue is producing at 80% of its capacity, even in this dry vintage. Of course, much less is made of this old vine cuv e – only two barrels. This has a touch more blush in its color than its counterpart. It's also showing some reduction so less perfumed at the moment. There's a strong flint note followed by pretty rose petals then sweet strawberries. The texture is marvellous, feeling of pure silk. Medium-bodied with integrated lift and soign tannins, this is seriously stylish. 2022-40Inc. TAX€5,894.93 -

The 2018 Goulée by Cos d'Estournel is a very pretty wine that balances fruit intensity with expressive aromatic top notes. Rose petal, mint, dried flowers, licorice and espresso lift a core of red/purplish berry fruit as this stylish, Merlot-based Médoc shows off its considerable allure. The blend is 73% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Cabernet Franc. Yields were just 33 hectoliters per hectare, as opposed to the more typical 45-50. Give it a good deal of aeration.Inc. The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Boudots 1er Cru has a well-defined bouquet, a mixture of red and black fruit, just a little oak to be subsumed. The palate is medium-bodied with (again), quite an oaky entry, pastille-like with fine tannins. Maybe it is missing a little tension on the finish, otherwise, this represents a very decent and quite delicious 2018 Nuit Saint-Georges. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.Inc. TAX€917.33
