(6x75cl) 2013Burghound (92)
This is quite earthy and even more intensely sauvage with its deeply pitched nose of dark berry fruit, smoked meat and herbal tea hints. There is fine volume to the tautly muscular medium weight flavors that are robust to the point of being chewy on the overtly rustic finale. This powerful effort is presently markedly firm and will definitely require extended bottle age to soften the stiff tannic spine. Recommended provided you have the patience to allow it at least a decade of cellar time.Inc. TAX€659.44 -
Burghound (92)
This is quite densely fruited with an unusually expressive mélange of violet, plum, red and black currant, tea and plenty of earth elements. There is very fine volume and plenty of power to the reasonably well-detailed and muscular flavors that delivers outstanding length on the youthfully austere and saline suffused finish. While I envision that markedly more depth will develop there is enough underlying material present that if it does then my predicted score may very well be too conservative as this is very good. The 2013 Chambertin Grand Cru, which comes from the limit with the forest that produces a low yields (in one year they cut the trees and the yields increased by 20%). Matured in five new barrels, it has a perfumed bouquet with red currant, cranberry and sous-bois notes with a touch of oyster shell. The palate is very well balanced with crisp red berry fruit, fine mineralité with a sense of energy and poise on the finish. There is a fine sustain here, a great contribution to the vintage and the domaine's top wine in 2013.Inc. TAX€3,051.96 -

Matured in 80% new oak, the 2013 Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru was bottled in December. It has a straightforward bouquet with brambly red berry fruit, perhaps a little rustic and missing a little complexity. It has plenty of sappy black fruit, good structure, but needs a little more flesh and persistence on the bay-leaf infused finish. Cellar this for a couple of years and see what comes out the other side.Inc. TAX€2,157.36 -

Tasted blind at Fine & Rare Wines' Clos Vougeot tasting, the 2013 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru from Domaine Tortochot has a slightly savory bouquet with redcurrant and cranberry, quite complex and opening nicely with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, a keen line of acidity and a pleasing bitterness with a sustained, quite tensile finish. Give this two or three more years in bottle and you will have a very interesting Clos Vougeot. This is much better than the bottle I encountered at the domaine last year.Inc. TAX€3,867.25 -

The 2013 Mazis Chambertin Grand Cru was bottled in December and aged in 100% new oak. Even though there is more new wood than the Charmes, here on the Mazis I find superior integration and it is in sync with the fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with firm but supple tannin, good body and density but with sufficient elegance on the finish. This is a broad-shouldered Mazis-Chambertin that should reward cellaring.Inc. TAX€3,309.36 -

Reticent aromas of menthol and mint. Fat and sweet in the mouth; more open-knit today than the 2014 but still showing good flavor definition and a touch of menthol austerity. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Charmes-Chambertin les Mazoyères Grand Cru has a lighter bouquet than its peers, a little simplistic for a grand cru although it does improve in the glass, becoming savory with hints of dried blood. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannin, good weight if missing sophistication and breeding, showing a slight bitterness towards the dry finish and yet you cannot help but feel this is going to turn into a lovely Charmes-Chambertin. Maybe this is enduring a dumb phase ... you will just have to wait it out. Tasted September 2016.Inc. TAX€1,189.98 -

Good medium red. Musky, slightly rustic nose shows more red than black fruits, with complicating notes of underbrush, herbs and pepper. Very rich, tactile, dry and backward, showing more minerality and medicinal reserve than primary berry or cherry fruit in the early going. Tough going today in spite of its depth of texture and richness. Not at all a sweet style. Vincent told me he prefers the easier sweetness of the 2014, noting that, in general, he regards the 2010 vintage as the best compromise between sweetness and energy since he took over winemaking here in 2006.Inc.
