From an historic estate in Pomerol dating back to the 18th century, the 2012 Beauregard (70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc) is a successful effort. The wine is dense ruby/purple and shows loads of licorice, blackcurrant and black cherry in a dense, medium to full-bodied very pure, rich style. Deep ruby-hued with no real bricking in the color, the 2000 Château Beausejour (Duffau-Lagarrosse) is based on 78% Merlot, 17% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, raised in 50% new barrels. It has an intense nose of ripe red and black fruits, green tobacco, truffle, spice, and an almost meaty, viande-like character. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, with a nicely balanced mouthfeel, still present yet largely integrated tannins, and a great finish. This complex, nuanced, exotic Saint-Emilion is drinking at its peak yet should have another 10-12 years of prime drinking before a gradual decline. Drink 2026-2038.Inc. TAX€385.87

Bordeaux's relatively diverse weather, particularly its rainfall, means that vintage variation can be quite broad between some years. However advances in wine making techniques, technology and investment has meant that many chateaux are still able to create very good wines in "lesser vintages". From the best vintages wines are made that are clambered for all over the world and mature excellently for many years.
