Vinous - Antonio Galloni (94)

The 2017 Latour-Martillac is a dark, powerful wine with a ton of Cabernet Sauvignon savoriness, depth and structure. Black cherry, graphite, spice, leather, lavender and menthol infuse the 2017 with striking character and power. The 2017 is a serious, at times stubborn, wine that needs time to soften. Even in the early going, though, it is impressive.

The Wine Cellar Insider (90-92)

Plump, sugar-laced black fruit, boysenberry, licorice, campfire smoke and barbecue essence get things underway. Quicky the sassy tannins kick in, shepherding you to a chic, fresh, tobacco infused, fruit-filled core. Using 30% whole bunches in the vinification, the wine was made from 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot, reaching 13% alcohol with a pH of 3.72. The harvest took place September 19 to October 3 and, sadly, close to 25% of the vines were damaged by frost.

Vinous - Neal Martin (90)

The 2017 Le Crock, always an unfortunate name, is a de facto delicious Saint-Estèphe that will appeal to those seeking a denser, more fruit-driven style in this vintage. It has not really changed since I tasted it from barrel with copious blackberry and raspberry coulis scents on the nose. The 25% new oak is nicely integrated. The palate is weighty and muscular for this vintage with black fruit laced with cedar and hoisin, just a little headiness on the finish. Personally I would afford it another three or four years in bottle.

It portrays an expressive, structured palate imbued with ripe dark fruits and silky tannins. The Le Dauphin d'Olivier 2017 is a sublime testament to the traditional craftsmanship and unerring passion of Château Olivier, making it a distinguished selection for any fine wine collection.

The single vineyard 2017 Le Dome checks in as a normal blend of 80% Cabernet Franc and 20% Merlot brought up in 80% new French oak, with the balance in once-used oak. This deeply colored 2017 has a spicy, complex style as well as medium to full body, lots of red, black, and blue fruits, building tannins, nicely integrated acidity, and a great finish. It shows more floral and incense notes with time in the glass, has plenty of structure, and is a beautifully classy, layered 2017 that's going to benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age and keep for two decades.

The 2017 Le Dragon de Quintus is plump and racy in the glass, with lovely up-front dark fruit, spice, mocha and leather notes that give the wine so much immediacy and sheer allure. Élevage has done wonders for the 2017, which, from bottle, is richer and deeper than it was from barrel. The bold, ripe style of Quintus comes through nicely in this second wine.

Wine Advocate (93-95+)

The deep garnet-purple colored 2017 Le Gay is youthfully mute, opening with black cherries, wild blueberries and mulberry scents with suggestions of violets, licorice and black soil. Medium-bodied, the palate delivers beautifully delineated fruit with oodles of freshness and firm yet beautifully ripe tannins, finishing very long and perfumed.

The 2017 Marquis de Calon is the second wine and is 57% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cabernet Franc that was brought up in 30% new barrels and hit 13.2% natural alcohol. This medium-bodied, elegant Saint-Estephe has plenty of Merlot flesh and charm as well as terrific cassis fruit and notes of cedary herbs and flowers. It’s already impossible to resist, yet I suspect it will evolve for 10-15 years in cool cellars.

The 2017 Pauillac de Château Latour is such a beautiful wine. Lush, pliant and supple, with pretty top notes, the 2017 is pure class. Sweet red plum, spice, leather, cedar and tobacco are some of the many nuances that grace the exquisite Pauillac of Château Latour. All the elements fall into place in a wine of total breeding.

Bruno Borie's Merlot-based Saint-Julien Lalande-Borie is plump, juicy and inviting in 2017. Inky dark blue and purplish berry fruit, spice, licorice, menthol and chocolate are all pushed forward in an easygoing, racy Saint-Julien that will drink well right out of the gate. The 2017 spent 12 months in French oak, 40% of which was new. This is very nicely done and delicious.

An unusually Cabernet-dominated blend that's 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc aged 18 months in 50% new French oak, the 2017 Le Petit Mouton De Mouton Rothschild boasts a deep ruby/purple color to go with classic Pauillac notes of blackcurrants, lead pencil, graphite, and green tobacco. Rich, medium to full-bodied, and surprisingly powerful, it has a soft attack yet builds beautifully on the palate, with ripe tannins and a great finish.
