Plum colour, still intense right through to the core of the wine, this is just a near-perfect St Estèphe, concentrated yet finessed, with balance, less muscular than you would find in most vintages of Calon today, still with depth but also nuance, full of pleasure and joy, cocoa bean, cigar box, blackcurrant, smoked earth, oyster shell finish. There is little left to be said of the 2009 vintage - it has been evaluated, reevaluated and dissected in every possible way by now, along with it’s companion vintage, 2010. As great a vintage as it was, producing a great wine wasn’t exactly a no-brainer. Without proper vineyard management, tannins can be tough and a touch green. Fortunately, many Chateaux refused to miss the opportunity to make nearly perfect wines.
