(12x75cl) 2013Vinous - Ian D'Agata (86-89)
Medium red. Aromas of red- and blackcurrant and loam are lifted by hints of flowers, licorice and tobacco. Smooth on the palate, offering flavors of red berries and dark plum. Not the last word in complexity but nicely balanced and devoid of the bitter or green tannins typical of many 2013s. Well done.Inc. TAX€522.35 -
(12x75cl) 2015Vinous - Antonio Galloni (92)
The La Grave is a muscular, authoritative Pomerol. Here the flavors are dark and intense, while the wine's vertical sense of structure adds to an impression of brooding, virile power. Black cherry, lavender, menthol, scorched earth and grilled herb inflections, along with potent tannins, give La Grave its distinctly baritone voice. I would prefer to cellar the 2015 for at least a few years and see what develops.Inc. TAX€768.28 -
Vinous - Antonio Galloni (91)
The 2017 La Grave is powerful and dense in the glass. Dark blue and purplish fruit, lavender, spice, menthol, licorice and dried herbs give the 2017 a decidedly somber intensity that comes through in the wine's overall feel as well. The tannins remain firm and sinewy, while slightly gamy, animal undertones reinforce an impression of rusticity. The 2017 is best enjoyed at the dinner table alongside rich, hearty fare.Inc. Spiced red and black fruits, cedarwood, and dried tobacco notes all emerge from the 2020 Château La Grave, and it's medium to full-bodied, with a solid mid-palate and ripe, building tannins as well as a nicely textured, balanced mouthfeel. Give this already complex, textured Pomerol 4-5 years in the cellar and enjoy over the following 10-15 years.Inc. TAX€267.83 -

Darker and denser than the 2015, the 2016 La Gravette de Certan reveals a similar profile yet has more obvious structure as well as full-bodied notes of smoked tobacco, black fruits, earth, and spice box. Deep, powerful, and shockingly good for a second wine, it’s well worth your time and money. Drink it over the coming 20+ years.Inc. TAX€1,042.06 -

A blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc that was brought up in 50% new barrels, the 2017 La Gravette De Certan is a smoking second wine from unquestionably one of the top estates in Pomerol. Loaded with notions of dark, chocolatey fruits, leafy herbs, and violets, it has more richness and depth on the palate than most estates’ top wine. Medium to full-bodied and textured, with sweet tannins, it's well worth seeking out and will evolve for two decades.Inc. TAX€434.78 -

The 2018 La Gravette de Certan is a gorgeous second wine. Pliant, creamy and so expressive, La Gravette is everything a second wine should be. Juicy dark cherry fruit, spice, licorice, new leather and lavender fill out the layers effortlessly. No, the 2018 is not quite the 2016, but it's close.Inc. TAX€722.38 -

Coming from 100% Merlot (all the Cabernet Franc went to the Grand Vin), the 2022 La Gravette De Certan comes from younger vines and spent 18 months in 50% new French oak. It's a forward, sexy second wine that has a ripe, voluptuous style in its red and black fruits, truffly earth, camphor, and flowery incense. Beautiful textured and medium to full-bodied, with solid, polished tannins and terrific overall balance, it's perfect for drinking any time over the coming 15 years or so.Inc. TAX€396.94 -

(1x75cl) 2011Vinous - Ian D'Agata (89)
Bright medium red. Candied raspberry, blueberry, blood orange, peony, crushed stone and white pepper on the nose. Like liquid silk on the palate, offering an uncanny combination of sweetness and energy. High-pitched flavors of red cherry, blackcurrant and fresh flowers carry through on the long finish, which features youthfully chewy tannins and a saline nuance. Quality-wise, this really isn't a second wine at all; in fact, in 2011 it's better than many classified growthsInc. TAX€125.48 -

The 2013 La Petite Eglise, which Denis Durantou poured from magnum since this is how the entire production was bottled, has a precise and fragrant bouquet with crushed stone scents filtering through the red berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin, tensile and fresh in the mouth, not powerful or deep, but lively and playful from start to finish. This is worth seeking out.Inc. TAX€248.88 -
Wine Advocate (91)
The 2014 La Petite Eglise, pure Merlot picked on 3 October, is always a little gem and probably deserves more respect from cognoscenti. It has a gorgeously pure bouquet with ebullient red berry fruit, perhaps showing now more blue fruit, since I last tasted it. The palate is medium-bodied with supple ripe tannin, pure red cherry and strawberry coulis intermingled with cold stone and a touch of blood orange. There is wonderful precision on the finish. This is just superb and doubtless great value.Inc. TAX€325.98 -
Vinous - Antonio Galloni (93)
Denis Durantou's 2015 La Petite Eglise is just as compelling from bottle as it was from barrel. Classy, polished and super-refined in every way, the Petite Eglise is all class. The bright red cherry, hard candy, mint and rose petal notes are beautifully delineated throughout. Even with all of its obvious fruit density, the 2015 remains light on its feet and gracious. There is no question Petite Eglise is one of the best second wines in 2015. Actually, Petite Eglise is not really a terrific second wine, it is simply a gorgeous Pomerol. That's all there is to it.Inc. TAX€112.60 -

The 2017 La Petite Eglise is poweful and rich in the glass. Dark purplish berry fruit, charcoal, licorice, clove and lavender are some of the many nuances that infuse the 2017 with its distinctly somber personality. Unctuous and racy in feel, with superb density, the 2017 is a decidedly extroverted Pomerol. Tasting it from bottle, I have the same impression I did en primeur: it is easily better than many top bottlings.Inc. TAX€607.66
