Vinous (91-93)

The 2020 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a crisp, quite pure bouquet with a mixture of red and blue fruit, a touch of violet, maybe just a bit pinched at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with a sappy opening, quite chewy compared to others and at the moment, this just attenuates a little on the finish. I need to be more convinced by this cuvée, at the moment, surpassed by their top-notch Premier Crus.

Black centre with purple rim. Jean-Nicolas finds this both upright and gourmand, a combination he likes. Flirts with 14% and stays on side. Super ripe cherries as part of the nose, kicks on really well on the palate with this high acidity which brings out the red fruit notes in fruit which otherwise wants to be richer. Long finish, and in the end the balance works well. Will need time. Tasted: December 2021

Aromas of cherries, spices and rich soil tones introduce the 2019 Bourgogne Côte d'Or Pinot Noir, a medium-bodied, supple and charming wine that's lively and expressive, with succulent acids and a pretty core of fragrant fruit. This lovely wine was produced from domaine-grown grapes.

Burghound (86-89)

(mostly from Pr meaux vines). Ripe aromas of various dark berries, warm earth and a whiff of the sauvage lead to attractively textured and rich flavors that possess fine mid-palate density, all wrapped in a rustic and robust finish that offers better than average complexity for a wine at this level. Mid purple. A softer richer dark fruit bouquet after Feusselottes. There is a spicy, peppery finish here which I didn’t expect, alongside the dark blackberry finish. Is it a type of minerality showing? Something to do with a little extra ripeness here? Intriguing. Drink from 2030-2036. Tasted Nov 2024.

These vines were under a fermage agreement with the M o-Camuzet n gociant arm for almost 20 years. Alas, they were taken back in 2021. So, this is the last bottling of this wine. It's a shame, because it is thoroughly charming with the dignified lightness that Chambolle often brings along with heady perfume. Here are aromas of mulberries, cherry preserves, dried flowers and cocoa bordered by fluffy tannins and suave acidity. 2022-30

(from Les Condemennes, Les Athets and Les Babillières). A more floral-suffused nose speaks mostly of spicy red and dark raspberry scents. The supple lighter weight flavors possess an attractive mouthfeel and evident minerality that adds a sense of lift to the youthfully austere and impressively long if mildly tangy finish.

Vinous - Neal Martin (89-91)

The 2023 Chambolle-Musigny Village comes from five parcels from two different fruit sources. It has a very light bouquet with brambly red fruit and cassis scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and a little more sophistication than the aromatics suggest, with a composed and slightly peppery finish. Drink this over the next eight to ten years.

The is also very pretty with its array of cool and pure red, earth and soft spice nuances, all of which is trimmed in just enough wood to notice. The delicious, round and sappy middleweight flavors possess solid mid-palate concentration and a seductive texture before culminating in a bitter pit fruit and mildly austere finish.

(this includes the fruit from the domaine’s .6 ha parcel of Au Bas de Combe as well as fruit from Les Lavières and the villages portion of Aux Grandes Vignes). Here the expressive nose blends hints of cassis and red berry liqueur with those of soft spice and newly turned earth. There is a lovely texture to the solidly concentrated medium weight flavors that also conclude in a firm, mildly warm and serious but not especially rustic or youthfully austere finish

Domaine fruit from Bas de Combe, plus purchased Grandes Vignes. Ruby purple in colour, picked at a more ideal ripeness than the Marsannay. Plenty of energy here in a rich red fruit with just a suggestion of blacker berries, yet with good acidity. Some plums to finish. Drink from 2029-2034. Tasted Nov 2024.

The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru comes from two vineyards, La Perrière and Terre Blanches, the former affected by hail in August. It has a relatively simple bouquet, though it seems fresh and focused. The palate is lighter in style, quite elegant, nicely poised if just missing a little substance on the finish.

The 2021 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru, which comes from Les Hauts Pruliers (this is unlikely to be mentioned on the label). This is a significant level up from the Village with precise light red cherry and strawberry fruit. Vinous (91-93)

The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Boudots 1er Cru needed a lot of aeration before it finally graced me with its presence. There is no stem addition in this vintage as there has been in previous years. It has a very well-defined bouquet even though it feels "aloof" at the moment, presenting sous-bois-infused black fruit and traces of iodine. The palate is well balanced with a slightly lactic, licorice-tinged entry. A precocious Les Boudots in the making. There is firm structure, good grip and a countervailing sorbet-like zip on the finish. This has all the components of a very fine Nuits Saint-Georges, but it will require cellaring.
