South Africa
At the bottom of its great continent, South Africa is a country of unlimited natural advantages. With the confluence of two oceans at the Cape, the sheltering effect of inland mountain chains and some of the most dynamic soils in the world, every piece is in place for the production of fine wine. The most well-known region has historically been Stellenbosch, but it is the wines of Swartland that have really turned South African wine on its head in recent years.
The wine industry is in the midst of a renaissance with classically styled wines making full advantage of remarkable terroir and an adventurous spirit. As a result, South Africa is producing some truly exceptional wines of great character and value. Striking blockbuster Syrahs and Bordeaux blends to full bodied Chardonnay and crisp Sauvignon Blanc are some of this great nation’s offerings. South Africa’s own grape, Pinotage, leaves critics divided yet can produce excellent single-variety offerings as well as distinguished Cape blends.

The 2015 Rubicon had been a source of contention prior to my visit, hailed by some respected commentators as one of the Cape’s greats and then almost pilloried in a contemporaneous blind tasting. It is a blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot, each fermented separately before blending. It was matured for 18 months in 66% new oak and the remainder second-fill. So what do I make of the wine? It is clear in color with quite a deep core. The bouquet is refined and focused, offering attractive mint- and graphite-infused black and red fruit and perhaps leaning a little more toward the latter compared to previous vintages. With aeration, subtle touches of pencil shavings emerge. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin and quite velvety in texture, displaying very well integrated new oak. There is a satisfying sense of harmony to this Rubicon and it is certainly well constructed, but it does not possess that peacock’s tail on the finish that takes a very good wine to the level of great. Perfectly enjoyable, and it demonstrates very good winemaking; however, when compared to, say, the 2015 Paul Sauer, it just falls a little short. The 2017 Rubicon is a classical blend of 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot, each vinified separately before undergoing malolactic fermentation in 300 litre French Nevers oak barrels, 60% new and 40% second fill. Deep purple-black in colour, the intensity and gravitas of this vintage is highlighted by the tight, dense, dark broody aromatics that require more than a little coaxing out the glass before revealing a very focused, slightly introverted bouquet of complex, tightly interwoven notes of violets, black currant preserve, black plum, Black Forest gateaux and hoisin sauce with backing notes of dried fennel, salty black liquorice, spicy cedar and an exotic Asian 5 spice nuance. While 2017 certainly stands out as another classical year of exceptional quality, the vintage will surely be remembered for its stand-out elegance, seamless palate textures and its signature weightless intensity and concentration. This Rubicon does of course possess plenty of stuffing and dazzles with gentle waves of blackberry crumble, crème de cassis, macerated black cherries, freshly tilled earth, unsmoked cigars and a finely textured, powdery tannin frame that dries the palate on the finish and reminds the drinker that this wine, however enjoyable in its youth, is also built for extended ageing. This really is another exquisite vintage with charm and poise, Grand Vin potency and an overt, unbridled determination to deliver long-term drinking pleasure.Inc. TAX€126.84 -

The palate is unctuous as you would expect and delivers….drum roll…650g/L residual sugar with effortless style. The Mullineux 2023 Swartland Granite Chenin Blanc comes from one of three sites dedicated to this grape. Each is about 400 meters in elevation, and all three have bush vines that are harvested at the same ripeness. The major difference lies in the soils, with this vineyard on granite, sandy soils that allow the roots to reach down deep (as much as five meters underground). These vines have a bigger canopy as a result, and the fruit maintains the most natural acidity (and low pH). This wine is characterized by bright fruit flavors and a linear delivery with a salty, mineral-laced finish. On the palate, it offers a harmonious balance of vibrant acidity and silky texture, culminating in a long, refreshing finish. Perfectly suited to complement seafood, poultry, or creamy cheeses, Momento Grenache Gris 2022 is a testament to exceptional quality and refined taste.

(12x75cl) 2022The Momento Swartland Grenache 2022 captivates with its vibrant ruby hue and exquisite aromatic complexity. Crafted in the renowned Swartland region of South Africa, this Grenache benefits from the area’s unique terroir characterized by rich soil and a Mediterranean climate. The vineyards are meticulously managed by the esteemed Momento winery, which employs sustainable viticultural practices to ensure optimal grape quality. During vinification, hand-selected grapes undergo gentle fermentation in stainless steel tanks, preserving the varietal’s delicate fruit flavours and nuanced spice notes. The wine is then aged for twelve months in French oak barrels, imparting subtle vanilla and toast undertones without overpowering the inherent character of the Grenache. On the palate, Momento Swartland Grenache 2022 offers a harmonious balance of ripe red berries, pepper, and earthy nuances, culminating in a long, elegant finish. This exceptional wine pairs beautifully with grilled lamb, hearty stews, and aged cheeses, making it a distinguished addition to any fine wine collection.

The 2020 Essence is the Mullineux's first release of this cuvée since 2012 and comes from the last fraction to come out of the press, comprising pure Chenin Blanc that took 30 months to ferment. It is beautifully defined and surprisingly discreet with marmalade, rose water, quince, apricot, and just a slight chlorine scent on the nose. The palate is unctuous as you would expect and delivers….drum roll…650g/L residual sugar with effortless style. The 12g/L acidity upholds freshness and prevents it from becoming cloying and, yes, very Tokaji-like on the slightly tangy finish. Decadent and slightly outrageous. Available only in 250mL bottles…so don't go asking for jeroboams. In Bond€102.00 -
(1x75cl) 2017Vinous (92)
The 2017 Granite Chenin Blanc has a very well defined bouquet with a stricter and more linear set of aromatics that need more coaxing from the glass than the 2016. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity - perhaps a more refined version of the 2016 – and features veins of ginger toward the poised and quite persistent finish. In Bond€88.00 -

"The hardest wine to make," says Andrea Mullineux of this Chenin Blanc from a nutrition-poor vineyard on the Kasteelbeg. But the effort is certainly worth it. Showing aromas of white flowers and gunflint, it has amazing focus, salinity and depth with linear acidity and notes of green apple, kitchen spices and umami. In Bond€93.00 -

It was the first of the three Chenin Blancs poured by Andrea Mullineux during our tasting. In Bond€120.00 -

Generally shown first in a line-up of the Mullineux's three soil specific Syrahs, this is firm, dense and entirely whole bunch fermented with damson and blackberry fruit, sappy tannins, one-third new oak and notes of black tea, lavender and Mediterranean spices. Needs time. 2022-3In Bond€448.00 -

One of a trio of brilliant soil-based Syrahs from the Mullineux in 2018, Granite hails from a 30-year-old vineyard on the Paardeberg. Structured and grippy, it's a wine that will reward patience, with clove spice from 100% whole bunches, notes of blood orange and blackberry, fine oak and a tangy, refreshing finish. In Bond€377.00 -

We wine geeks love to discuss the relative merits of the three soil-specific Syrahs from the Mullineux. This is (just) my pick of the trio in 2019, sourced from a two-hectare block on the Jakalsfontein farm. Ginger and violet aromas segue into a palate of remarkable grip and persistence, with energetic acidity and a savoury, satisfying finish. 2022-29In Bond€342.00 -

The 2020 Syrah Granite, which usually has a slightly lower pH, has a very attractive bouquet with red fruit, light terracotta, dried violet scents and just a hint of Earl Grey in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, cohesive and with impressive weight, tightly-packed towards the finish with a pinch of white pepper and sage on the aftertaste. Give this two or three years in bottle. In Bond€96.00 -

Fermented with 100% whole clusters, like all of the site-specific Mullineux Syrah, this is the most intense, backward and well-structured of the trio. Serious, compact and concentrated, it's a red that wouldn't look out of place in Cornas, with violet aromas, damson and blackberry fruit, sturdy tannins and the freshness and focus of a cool vintage. In Bond€1,175.00 -

Granite uses grapes from two parcels on what is now Adi Badenhorst's Jakkalsfontein farm and is always a structured, dense, compact wine that handles its 100% whole bunches and 50% new wood lightly. Serious, dark and brooding, it has perfumed damson, wild herb and blackberry flavours and a savoury, sinewy finish. In Bond€1,175.00 -
