2009 |
Breaky Bottom Gerard Hoffnug Brut Vintage 2009 (6x75cl) Vinous (91)The 2009 Cuvée Gerald Hoffnung Brut is a blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. It has a delightful, winsome bouquet of white flowers, brioche and Braeburn apple aromas that are very well defined. The palate is sharp on the entry, with orange peel and lemon zest flavors, and quite taut and focused, although I am seeking just a little more vigor toward the leesy finish. Still, overall this is a fine English sparkling wine that is developing a lovely creamy mouthfeel.

Bold and opulent, with a plush nose of cinnamon-coated baked apples, spun sugar, oats and custard, then a soft yet crisp palate revealing layers of intense apricot, red apple, nuts and toast. Still retains plenty of age-worthy freshness.

Gusbourne Brut Reserve 2018 (6x75cl) Vinous (89)The 2018 Brut Reserve from Gusbourne in Kent provides more evidence, not that it is really necessary anymore, that English sparkling wine is really delivering. A tripartite blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier aged for 36 months on the lees, it offers enticing orange blossom, Nashi pear and hints of crème fraiche on the nose. The palate is imbued with a slightly creamy texture offset by well-judged acidity and a malic bite on the finish.

Hambledon Classic Cuvee Rose Brut NV (6x75cl) Jamie Goode (93)This is a varietal Pinot Meunier, mainly from the 2015 vintage (plus some older barrel-aged wines), with zero dosage. A full pink/red colour, this has a powerful nose of red cherries, some rhubarb, and some sappy herby notes. The palate shows lovely herb-tinged, subtly leafy red cherry and strawberry fruit, with the acidity integrated perfectly. Despite the lack of dosage, this doesn’t seem at all acidic or bracing: the fruit carries the palate so well. Nice tartness on the finish, with a little tannic bite that makes it incredibly food friendly. A remarkable wine that defies easy categorization, and beautifully put together.

Hambledon Premiere Cuvee Brut NV (6x75cl) Jancis Robinson (17.5)73% Chardonnay, 10% Pinot Noir. Dosage 7 g/l. Mostly 2013 with a bit of 2011. 14% of the wines aged in barrel. 46 months on lees.
It smells like champagne. Rich and leesy, and broad. Hugely impressive, takes up all the space, stands with wide shoulders and feet wide apart, commanding. Something a little salty. And then just as it seems to be all about making a full-frontal impact you realise that the finish is vertical and incredibly intense and it pulls in, apricots and salted lemons and orange peel and as tightly and precisely folded as origami in marble. Texture that somehow reminds me of silk and sandpaper.

Outstanding nose, with all the bready complexity of great sparkling. Saline and zippy, with excellent apple and lemon fruit on the palate. Not at all sharp, with excellent balance and flesh on the body. Mature, mushroomy character on the finish. Expertly done. (RH)

Rathfinny Brut Rose 2016 (6x75cl) Rathfinny Rosé Brut 2016 is the second vintage of Rathfinny's flagship sparkling wine, with an expressive red-fruit style that beautifully showcases the increased presence of Pinot Noir within the blend. Vivid coral in hue, it has a lifted nose of wild strawberries and mandarin zest, giving way to a rich mousse of Rainier cherries and candied red apple skin, and a silky, strawberry shortcake finish.

Sugrue Cuvee BOZ Blanc de Blancs 2015 (6x75cl)

2015 |
Sugrue Cuvee BOZ Blanc de Blancs 2015 (6x75cl) Jancis Robinson (18)100% Chardonnay, 100% Hampshire vines. A single vineyard planted in 2004 at Jenkyn Place, on greensand and fractured chalk soils. Vinified in stainless steel, no oak. Dosage 9 g/l. Boz was Dermot's brother.
This took me into a wordless lacuna from the moment I put the glass to my nose. A hinterland. An unoccupied interior. There is an expression, chiaroscuro, from the Italian meaning 'light-dark'. It's when an artist allows the shape and substance of the form to be defined only by the way light falls against it. Silent contrast. Black and white. Shadows and light. You, the recipient, become the watcher, waiting for things to emerge from the shadows, for the shapes to make sense. Chiaroscuro demands meditative patience, unpartisan curiosity, a certain strength, the ability to see beyond the immediate and look through to find beauty. I will tell you that this astoundingly beautiful wine is chiselled to within an inch of its bones and yet it is charged with the purest canon of English fruit. I will tell you that it is so spicy that I just assumed the base wine was oak fermented and aged, until I read the notes. I will tell you that it is long and mineral and like a flashing blade of Valyrian steel although it cuts through ripe pear and elderflower honey and cold full-cream milk sitting in a pail on a flagstone floor. But that would not describe this wine. I'll go back to chiaroscuro. Rocks in the moonlight.

Sugrue Ex Machina Rose 2016 (6x75cl) Falstaff (95)Both orange peel and Red Delicious apple figure on the nose, alongside a subtle hint of fresh Viennoiserie that turns into shortcrust with more air. The palate strikes immediately with its effortlessness: there is that lovely balance between juicy freshness and mellow ripeness that you get in red apples. The slender body fizzes away with tiniest bubbles, lending creaminess and gentleness, expressing serenity, beauty and depth. Very elegant, lovely now, certain to evolve into a grandiose and gastronomic rosé.
