Mosel

The Mosel wine region follows the Mosel river from its source to where it joins the Rhine. The best vineyards are sited on steep south facing slopes which are very hard to cultivate but provide ample reward for that work in the end result of the wine. The two most prestigious areas for viniculture are the Saar and Ruwer. Here the excellent Riesling can be delicate but bursting with complexity.

This overtly honeyed three-star offering leads with a nose suggesting strawberry preserves and quince jelly, but when these reemerge on the creamy, expansive palate, it is to the accompaniment of bright fresh lime and cooling green herbal essences, so that any tendency toward confitured character is delightfully counterbalanced. The finish is rich but also strikingly focused, transparent to stony nuances, and downright refreshing, a combination one seldom experiences from an Auslese, much less one from material as high in must weight and botrytis as was involved here. I suspect that with time this will have much more to say for itself.

The 2018 Riesling Wehlener Klosterberg Auslese *** (Green Capsule) is very clear and openly fruity on the concentrated and aromatic nose, with ripe and spicy stone fruit and lychee as well as spicy aromas with coolish notes of crushed gray slate and flowers. This is another 2018 that reminds me of the world's finest Gewürztraminers due to the flavors, richness, mild acidity and perfect mix of tropical fruit aromas, mineral spiciness and very fine tannins. The wine is sweet rather than medium-sweet, but its crystalline and elegant acidity and aromatic intensity make this a spectacularly great 2018 with greatly deposed power. The wine already tastes dangerously good today, but it will develop at least as gorgeous as the 2003s. This could end up as a giant one day. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.

The 2018 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese *** (White Capsule) is bright and intense on the very elegant and refined yet aromatic and super ripe but elegant nose. On the palate, this is a rich and powerful, very intense and concentrated Riesling with a tight structure and a massive yet still not finessed or stimulating finish. Jellied and candied apple are garlanded in decadent lily. Hints of bruised apple skin supply aromatic and flavor contrast while remaining consistent with the themes of concentration and decay-by-botrytis. Nutty piquancy and an undertone of wet stone, unexpected in such a rich Auslese, add further intrigue on a soft, viscous palate, leading into a long, caramel-kissed finish that introduces a welcome hint of fresh apple juiciness, and whose sheer sweetness stops just short of becoming cloying.

The 2021 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese *** (Golden Capsule) is bright, pure and fresh on the still discreet but very delicate nose that shows perfectly ripe white fruit and deeper, finely weathered, flinty slate aromas. Lush and round on the palate, this is a highly finessed and stimulating saline and savory Auslese with crystalline, finely grained but nervy acidity and a long and intense yet weightless finish. The wine is finely structured but delivers mouth-filling delicate fruit and is almost irresistible at this early stage. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in May 2023.

The 2020 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese (White Capsule) is clear, pure, intense and refined, spicy and flinty on the nose that shows fully ripe, yellow-golden Riesling fruit combined with flinty/savory slate aromas. Lush and dense yet crystalline and refined on the palate, this is an elegant, very intense and saline, concentrated and substantial Sonnenuhr Spätlese that is, analytically and also sensorially, certainly an Auslese that reveals a concentrated, lemon-fresh, savory and stimulating bitter finish with great substance and class. This 2020 is remarkably complex and tensioned, but it has stimulating, zesty salinity and serious tannin structure. This impressive dry (or dry styled?) Spätlese will need another five to 10 years to open up and unfold its finesse and layers that it will easily keep for 50+ years, if cellared properly. 11.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine from AP 72 21 in July 2022.

This dry-tasting three-star Auslese reflects some of Molitor’s lowest yields from a harvest of already meager volume. Pungent scents of wood smoke, grapefruit peel and quarry dust set the tone for a zesty, piquant, expansive palate that reflects both high dry extract and 12.5 percent alcohol in its sense of mouth-filling mass. Abundant juiciness of fresh grapefruit and white peach linger into a bright, bittersweetly nutty finish of vibratory intensity. As this opens to the air, it keeps getting more expressively complex and gripping: one more piece of evidence that in 2014, Zeltinger Schlossberg was capable of upstaging Zeltinger Sonnenuhr.

From the oldest vines (120+ years), the 2015 Riesling Zeltlinger Sonnenuhr Auslese *** (White Capsule) opens with a very pure yet rich and intense bouquet of luxuriously ripe and intense fruits. Rich and opulent on the palate, still with a yeasty texture but great elegance and endless salinity, this is a powerful and intense Riesling with fine yet vital acidity, a very good mineral grip and a long finish. However, this wine needs at least 10 to 20 years to age and might deserve an even higher score then.

The 2020 Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Auslese ** (White Capsule) comes out pure and intense and with amazing finesse and complexity, reminiscent of ripe and warm stone fruit and chamomile aromas along with notes of almond cake and notes of weathered slate. On the palate, this is a spectacularly good two-starred Auslese with a concentrated but pristine texture but also refreshing phenolics on the saline finish. This is a sublime, nuanced and complex Riesling from one of the Mosel's most exciting vineyards where Molitor holds by far the majority. His 2020 Auslese ** is full of energy, tension and salinity, and dare I say, planet wine doesn't have that much to compete at this level of terroir expression and quality for a price of an incredible 40 euros ex-cellar. 12% stated alcohol. Quince and apple jellies on the nose – headily wreathed with iris, heliotrope and lily – acquire a stimulatingly tangy apple skin edge as well as bright limey juiciness on the palate, which at the same time offers a custardy sense of dense, creamy richness. As with this wine’s superb Wehlener counterpart, textural richness and enormous concentration have not precluded buoyancy and even an airy sense of openness. This beauty finishes with terrific, vibrant persistence and a sweet-saline savor that veritably milks the salivary glands.

The nose of this three-star Auslese is exotic in its evocation of musky peony, narcissus and lily allied with peach, mango and banana. On the palate, this is a rich and powerful, very intense and concentrated Riesling with a tight structure and a massive yet still not finessed or stimulating finish. The wine has remarkable finesse and salinity, yet it is still somewhat massive and square to really simulate. Never mind, the wine has time. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.

Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine from AP 43 21 in July 2022.

That exoticism is complemented by a luxuriantly creamy, soft palate impression, leading to a finish that is persistent perfumed, soothing and stone-lined if slightly diffuse. Both botrytis and residual sugar are playing discreet roles, most evidenced by hints of quince preserves and caramel.
