Mosel

The Mosel wine region follows the Mosel river from its source to where it joins the Rhine. The best vineyards are sited on steep south facing slopes which are very hard to cultivate but provide ample reward for that work in the end result of the wine. The two most prestigious areas for viniculture are the Saar and Ruwer. Here the excellent Riesling can be delicate but bursting with complexity.

  • Von Schubert Maximin Grunhauser Abtsberg Riesling Auslese 2015 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (93)

This was picked near the end of October, “principally,” as von Schubert explained, “from shriveled [rosinierte] and to a lesser extent botrytis-affected berries. The dominance of desiccated berries made for high acidity as well as must weight. Right after this picking, we got another rain,” he added, “so it was good that we had finished up.” Persian melon and white peach inform a heady nose and a glossy, expansive, almost custard-rich palate. There is just enough primary juiciness to supply welcome refreshment, but for now at least, the elevated acidity isn’t evident. Hints of marzipan and licorice lend a confectionary cast to the lusciously lingering finish.

  • Von Schubert Maximin Grunhauser Abtsberg Riesling GG 2019 (1x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (93)

From another very warm year with several peaks of summer heat, the 2019 Maximin Grünhaus Abtsberg GG is concentrated and aromatic on the floral nose that is reminiscent of finely weathered green slate. It's airy yet delicate in its aromatic and fruity intensity, and it's starting to enter the wide open "perfect to drink now" window that Mosel, Saar and Ruwer Rieslings are world-famous for. Dense and concentrated, possibly with some percent of botrytis or at least over-ripeness, this is a fruity, textured and very fleshy Abtsberg, which is a fascinating contrast to the filigreed and airy 2021 classic. The 2019 Abstberg is part of the Schlosskeller Reserve that the von Schubert family released last year to compensate for the dramatic losses to spring frost in 2024. 12% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in January 2026.
