Uccelliera
About Uccelliera
Hailing from a family of sharecroppers from Castelnuovo dell’Abate, Andrea Cortonesi worked for numerous producers, most notably Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona, until he acquired the Uccelliera farm in 1986 to strike out on his own. In fact, the Uccelliera estate was once part of the Ciacci estate until Andrea’s acquisition. Credited with production of the famed 1988 and 1990 vintages of Ciacci that propelled it into the global limelight, Andrea can count himself as one of Monica Larner’s favourite Brunello producers.
“If anyone embodies the amazing growth of Brunello di Montalcino that person is Andrea.”

Smoke, tobacco, cedar and roasted coffee beans wrap around a core of juicy dark cherries and plums in the 2010 Brunello di Montalcino. There is plenty of depth in the glass, but, as is often the case here, three years in oak yields a wine with slightly oxidative overtones. Powerful, incisive tannins support the finish.Inc. Balsam herbs, cocoa and sweet white smoke give way to crushed black cherry and plum as the 2017 Brunello di Montalcino blossoms in the glass. This is elegance personified, silky, deep and round, yet delivering a core of saline-minerality that creates a savory sensation – umami, in a way – with masses of ripe red fruits and confectionary spices to contrast. The tannins are sweet and round, presenting a chiseled structure; yet it’s not forceful. This tapers off with a tart twang of sour wild berries under an air of lavender and violets. Wow; there is so much concentration and depth here, but also balance. In fact, there’s hardly a sign of this being from a difficult vintage. While I expect it will have a shorter life than an Uccelliera Brunello from a classic year, the 2017 should not be missed.Inc. TAX€785.27 -

A ripe red color, the 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino is expressive of its place, with warming notes of licorice, black cherries, anise, cedar, and dark soil lifting from the glass. As it opens, it becomes purer in its fruit profile, shining through beautifully. Full-bodied, with ripe tannins and a savory slanting profile, notes of espresso and mocha float across the palate, filling it with purity of fruit and lovely concentration through its long finish. It’s a fantastic Brunello with a warming richness that can stand up to hearty winter foods and will be best enjoyed over the next 15 years. Drink 2026-2040.Inc. TAX€528.55 -

Rich and deeply alluring, the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva wafts up to display crushed ashen stone mixed with hints of ginger, dusty florals and black cherry preserves. This is velvety-smooth and pliant in feel, lifted by cooling herbal and mineral tones, as an opulent wave of ripe red and black fruits washes across the palate, leaving a staining of minerals and spice in its wake. It’s long and structured, in need of further time to come fully into focus, yet somehow the 2016 Riserva remains completely fresh, tapering off to inner earth tones and hints of blueberry. Time will reveal further depths. This is an utterly classic Uccelliera Brunello in the making.Inc. TAX€1,455.76 -
